For most Pixel owners, leave Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization enabled. In Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization, choose Adaptive Charging if you normally charge overnight and want 100% near wake-up, or Limit to 80% if you usually finish the day with charge remaining and value long-term battery health more than maximum runtime. Use Battery Saver or Extreme Battery Saver only when you need the charge already in the phone to last longer.
The right setting depends on your charging routine
Pixel’s charging controls solve different problems, so there is no single “best” switch. Adaptive Charging still fills the battery to 100%, but delays the final part of the charge so the phone spends less time sitting at full. The 80% limit deliberately stops normal charging at 80% to reduce battery stress over the long term. Battery Saver modes conserve energy that remains in the battery; they do not change how the phone charges.

Charging-optimization controls are offered on supported models and software versions. If a menu item is missing, the label or feature may not apply to your Pixel.
How to change Charging optimization
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery health.
- Open Charging optimization and turn on Use charging optimization.
- Select Adaptive Charging or Limit to 80%, if your device offers those choices.

When Adaptive Charging is the better choice
Adaptive Charging is designed for a regular routine such as plugging in before bed and unplugging in the morning. The phone charges more slowly or pauses before the final stretch, then aims to reach 100% close to your expected unplug time. That reduces the number of hours spent fully charged without forcing you to start the day at 80%.
Google says the feature takes about 14 days to learn charging habits. Travel, shift work, a new alarm time or frequently changing bedtime can prevent it from activating reliably. On Pixel 4, Adaptive Charging depends on a specified overnight charging pattern and alarm condition. Pixel 4a and later learn habits from charging behavior instead. If you need a guaranteed full charge for an early departure, check the battery before unplugging rather than assuming the schedule was recognized.
When to use Limit to 80%
The 80% limit is intended for people who routinely have charge left at the end of the day. Keeping the battery below a full charge reduces the time it spends at the highest voltage, a condition associated with faster aging. Google lists the limit for Pixel 6a and later. It is a battery-longevity choice, not a performance mode.

Expect roughly one-fifth less capacity available between charges. That may be insignificant for light users but inconvenient if you use navigation, cellular video, gaming, a hotspot or a weak-signal connection for long periods. You can disable the limit before a long day, charge fully, and re-enable it afterward.
A Pixel using the 80% limit still periodically needs a full charge so its capacity estimate remains accurate. Google says the phone reaches 100% every tenth cycle; after the display reaches 100%, leave it connected for at least 30 minutes. This calibration requirement does not mean you should keep the phone at 100% every day.

Keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization enabled
Adaptive Battery learns which apps you use most and restricts background activity from apps that rarely matter. Per-app battery optimization applies similar controls so apps do not consume power when you are not using them. Google’s guidance says, “To make sure your apps only use battery power when you need them, keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization turned on.” See Google Pixel Help for the official setup guidance.
These controls are enabled by default. Check them after setting up a new phone, restoring a backup or completing a factory reset, because usage learning can take a few weeks. During that period, battery life may change as the system builds a pattern.

Do not disable optimization globally to fix one misbehaving app. First identify the app under Settings > Battery and review its background usage. Only exempt an app when you need continuous background work, such as a time-critical messaging, accessibility or device-management function. An exemption can increase idle drain, so remove it if the app does not need uninterrupted activity.
Use Battery Saver for low-charge emergencies
Battery Saver is for extending the charge you have now. You can turn it on manually from the battery settings or Quick Settings, and Google allows an automatic trigger at a selected battery level. Depending on the Pixel and Android version, it can reduce background refresh, delay some notifications, limit location activity and apply other power-saving rules.
Extreme Battery Saver applies stronger restrictions and is appropriate when you may be away from power for many hours. It can pause most apps and allow only the apps you designate. Because notifications and background synchronization can be delayed, use it intentionally rather than leaving it on permanently.

When the battery is critically low, the largest savings often come from changing what you do:

- Stop turn-by-turn navigation when you no longer need it, or download maps before leaving coverage.
- Avoid extended video recording, streaming, 3D gaming and camera use.
- Turn off hotspot and Bluetooth accessories that are not needed.
- Reduce screen brightness and shorten the screen timeout.
- Move to a location with better cellular reception if possible; a phone working constantly to find a signal can drain quickly.
These actions preserve the current charge; they do not replace a charging-optimization setting.
Protect the battery with temperature and compatible charging hardware
Heat accelerates battery aging. Google recommends charging in a cool place, around 25°C (78°F), and keeping the phone out of direct sun and hot vehicles. Remove heat-trapping conditions, such as charging under bedding, and stop intensive gaming or video recording while the phone is charging if it becomes hot.
Use a compatible USB-C Power Delivery (PD) or Programmable Power Supply (PPS) charger. Charger wattage alone does not guarantee a particular charging speed: the Pixel model, cable, charger protocol and temperature all affect the result. Check the specifications for your exact model and use a cable rated for the charger. A slower compatible charger is preferable to an uncertified unit that overheats or repeatedly disconnects.
Charging settings cannot reverse chemical aging. If the phone becomes unusually hot, the battery swells, the back separates or the device shuts down unexpectedly, unplug it, keep it away from flammable materials and arrange service. Battery health assistance and what your Pixel can report
Battery health assistance is available on Pixel 6a and later, with controls that vary by model. Google says Pixel 9a and later enable it by default and do not allow it to be turned off. The feature gradually adjusts maximum battery voltage as the battery ages and can affect charging speed. A temporary change in charging behavior is therefore not automatically a fault.
Pixel 8a and later can show a charge-cycle count at Settings > About phone > Battery information. Google lists Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro as models that do not show battery-health status in Settings. Absence of a health readout does not mean the battery is healthy or unhealthy; it means that particular diagnostic is not exposed in the user interface.
Expected battery life by Pixel generation
The figures below are Google’s design guidance, not a guarantee for an individual phone. Usage pattern, heat, charging habits and the particular battery all affect results.

Google’s current Pixel battery guidance, accessed October 13, 2026, recommends considering replacement below 80% remaining capacity or at the applicable cycle figure. A cycle is the equivalent of using 100% of the battery’s capacity over one or more charges; several partial discharges can add up to one cycle.
Practical setups for common routines
Predictable overnight charging
- Enable Use charging optimization and select Adaptive Charging.
- Keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization on.
- Use a compatible USB-C PD or PPS charger in a cool, ventilated location.
- After about two weeks of consistent timing, check whether the phone reaches 100% near your normal unplug time.
- Before travel or an unusually early morning, verify the displayed charge rather than relying on the learned schedule.
Light or desk-based use
- Select Limit to 80% if you normally finish the day with substantial charge remaining.
- Leave the phone connected during work only when convenient; the cap prevents ordinary charging beyond 80% on supported models.
- Turn the cap off for a day when you expect unusually heavy use.
- Allow the required full-charge calibration cycle and 30-minute hold at 100% when the phone requests or performs it.
Irregular schedule or frequent travel
- Prioritize the runtime you actually need. Charge to 100% when an 80% cap would create risk.
- Keep Adaptive Charging enabled if you sometimes follow a routine, but do not treat it as a guaranteed deadline.
- Carry a compatible charger and enable Battery Saver when the remaining percentage must last until the next outlet.
- Recheck charging behavior after crossing time zones or changing work shifts; the learned pattern may no longer match.
Troubleshoot charging that seems wrong
The phone stops at about 80%
That is expected when Limit to 80% is selected, and it can also occur temporarily under battery-health assistance. Open Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization to see which option is active. Disable the limit when you need a full charge.

Adaptive Charging did not finish by morning
Confirm that the feature is enabled, then consider whether the phone has had roughly 14 days to learn your routine. An irregular bedtime, travel, a changed alarm or a different charger schedule can prevent the expected timing. For a one-time full charge, temporarily choose unrestricted charging and monitor the percentage.
Battery life fell after setup or reset
Give Adaptive Battery and app optimization several weeks to learn usage. During that period, inspect Settings > Battery for an app with abnormal background use, update the app and remove unnecessary background permissions before changing system-wide optimization.
The phone charges slowly
Check temperature first. Heat, direct sunlight, an incompatible charger, a poor cable connection or heavy use while charging can all reduce speed. Use a compatible USB-C PD or PPS charger, keep the phone cool and test again. Battery-health assistance may also deliberately adjust maximum voltage on supported models.

For a predictable overnight routine, Adaptive Charging is the balanced default: it preserves full morning capacity while reducing time at 100%. For owners who consistently have plenty of charge left, the 80% limit makes a clearer longevity trade-off. Everyone should keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization enabled, control heat, and reserve Battery Saver modes for times when the existing charge must last. None of these settings replaces a worn battery; capacity below Google’s 80% guidance or physical damage calls for professional replacement rather than another software tweak.
