Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →There is no proven universal “best settings” preset for Gears of War: E-Day. The most reliable way to improve stability without unnecessarily degrading visuals is to identify whether your PC is limited by its GPU, CPU, or shader compilation, then change one setting at a time and check the result in the same gameplay scene.
Start with a repeatable baseline
- Update the game and your graphics driver, then restart the game after a driver update.
- Run the built-in benchmark at your current resolution and preset. Record the result and note whether you are dealing with a consistently low frame rate, intermittent hitching, or a crash.
- Revisit the same gameplay area where you notice the problem. The benchmark is useful for comparisons, but Tom’s Hardware found it approximated rather than precisely matched its in-game scenes (Tom’s Hardware performance analysis).
- If you already use a trusted performance overlay, watch CPU and GPU utilization while reproducing the issue. Do not diagnose a bottleneck from a single momentary reading.
Compare changes by frame-time consistency and repeatable low-frame behavior, image quality at your normal display resolution, and whether the change targets the limit you actually observed. A higher benchmark score alone is not enough if the hitch occurs only in a particular area.

If the GPU is the bottleneck, try resolution and upscaling first
Test a lower output resolution before reducing several visual settings at once. For context, Tom’s Guide’s reviewer reported about 50 FPS at 4K High on a Ryzen 7 9700X, RTX 5070, and 32 GB of RAM, then described smoother gameplay at 1440p with Performance upscaling. That is one reviewer’s observation on one system, not a controlled comparison or a guarantee for other PCs (Tom’s Guide system requirements and performance notes).
- Lower the output resolution one step and check the same scene.
- If the game offers an upscaler, compare its available quality modes one at a time. The Steam listing names NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 and AMD FSR “Redstone,” with frame generation or Multi Frame Generation available on supported hardware. Feature support depends on your GPU; check the game’s current options and the Steam listing rather than assuming every mode is available on every system.
- Judge the image at your usual viewing distance and target resolution. The reviewed sources do not provide a controlled, setting-by-setting image-quality study, so there is no evidence-backed universal slider recipe.
Frame generation is a separate option from increasing the game’s rendered base frame rate. It should not be treated as a fix for a CPU bottleneck or as a guarantee of more responsive input.

If the CPU is the bottleneck or frame pacing remains poor
Reducing resolution may do little when the CPU is limiting performance. In Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 test setup, a Ryzen 7 9800X3D delivered 42% higher performance than a Ryzen 5 7600X at 1080p High. That result demonstrates CPU scaling in that test; it is not a promised improvement from changing a setting (Tom’s Hardware performance analysis).
Do not enable Low Core Mode by default
Tom’s Hardware reported lower performance across its pool of 25 tested CPUs with Low Core Mode, with no improvement to 1% lows. Its exception was a deliberately reduced two-core configuration that had streaming and freezing problems. That narrow result does not make the mode a general-purpose stability setting.

Retest before making broader changes
Change one setting, revisit the same gameplay area, and compare the result. Avoid BIOS changes, overclocking, or disabling security features as general stability fixes: the cited sources do not support those recommendations.
If the problem is shader-related delay or hitching
Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) precompiles shaders to reduce shader work during launch and gameplay. Microsoft reports an approximately 95% reduction in shader-compilation time for supported systems—not a 95% reduction in all stutter. For E-Day, Microsoft’s documented experience path is to install the Xbox PC app before downloading the game. Requirements include Windows 11 24H2 or higher and supported GPU and driver configurations; check Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery guidance for current compatibility details. ASD does not establish a fix for unrelated CPU or GPU limits, network problems, crashes, or other game defects.

Use the requirements as a baseline, not a performance promise
Tom’s Guide lists a recommended tier that includes an RTX 5060, RTX 3060 Ti, RX 6700 XT, or RX 9060 XT, alongside 16 GB of RAM and 115 GB of storage. Meeting those listed requirements does not guarantee stable performance at every resolution or preset; results vary with the PC, scene, and settings. If your PC is below that graphics tier and remains GPU-limited after testing resolution and upscaling, a graphics-card upgrade may be relevant—but it will not by itself fix shader compilation delays, CPU limits, or crashes.
How to interpret older beta-era advice
The official beta FAQ described stability and performance as ongoing work during the beta; do not treat that notice as a statement about the launch build. It also noted that Intel Arc users experienced shader recompilation at every launch at that time, and advised Arc A580/B580 users with poor performance to verify ReBAR and Above 4G Decoding. These are beta-era troubleshooting notes, not a diagnosis for current builds. Check the official beta FAQ and current official support information before applying them.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
Xbox Wire said that, since the July Multiplayer Open Beta, the team had “continued to iterate and improve PC stability and performance across a wide range of hardware configurations” in its launch PC specifications announcement. That improvement does not establish one best combination of individual settings for every PC. The available coverage does not provide a controlled launch-build ranking of settings such as shadows, reflections, geometry, or ray tracing, nor a best upscaler mode for all hardware. Use the benchmark to compare changes, then let the scene and bottleneck you actually observe guide the next adjustment.
