Blockchain Analytics Tools Compared: How Investigators Trace Illicit Crypto Transactions

Blockchain analytics can map crypto flows and surface service exposures, but it cannot by itself identify a wallet owner or guarantee recovery. Here’s how to compare tools for investigative work.

Blockchain analytics tools help investigators follow funds, map address relationships and connect on-chain activity to provider-maintained entity and intelligence data. They can reveal leads and support casework, but a ledger trace does not by itself establish who owns a wallet or guarantee that funds can be recovered. The available official product descriptions support a practical comparison—not a verified head-to-head ranking—so agencies should evaluate tools against their own networks, cases and security requirements.

What blockchain analytics tools do—and what they cannot establish

Public blockchains record transactions, but addresses generally do not identify the people or organizations using them. Analytics software organizes ledger history and adds investigative features, such as clustering addresses believed to be controlled by the same entity, aggregating and visualizing flows, and maintaining databases that associate clusters with known entities. Some services also integrate online or darknet intelligence related to wallet addresses.

An investigator can use a deposit address to examine its transaction history, counterparties and known exposure. Depending on the case, that work can support suspicious-activity reporting, identify investigative leads, help trace suspected proceeds, and prepare evidence or requests to freeze or reissue centralized stablecoins. The OSCE’s 2026 Following the Money guide says these tools play a crucial role in investigating illicit virtual-asset activity, arresting criminals and seizing illicit funds.

  • A trace is not an identity. An address cluster or link to a known service may help direct an inquiry, but it does not by itself prove who controlled an address at a particular time. Investigators may need to contact a virtual asset service provider (VASP) and use legal process to obtain identifying records.
  • Attribution is evidence to assess. Ask how the provider sourced, reviewed and updated an entity label, and whether the relationship is deterministic or probabilistic. A product’s coverage or attribution claims are not independent validation.
  • Some paths are difficult to resolve. The OSCE notes challenges involving VASPs and other services, smart contracts, and applications that mix, trade or convert assets. Coverage depends on the networks and activity supported. The guide says most virtual assets can be traced using public data, while identifying privacy coins as an exception; this is not a guarantee that every transaction path can be resolved.
  • Tracing is not recovery. Identifying a service or potential counterparty may enable a follow-up request, but it does not compel cooperation or ensure that assets remain available to freeze or return.

How a crypto-tracing investigation typically uses the software

  1. Start with a known lead. Enter a relevant address or transaction identifier, then inspect its history, counterparties and any displayed entity or exposure information.
  2. Follow the flow and inspect the links. Use the transaction graph and address clustering to identify possible paths and service exposures. Check the basis and confidence of important labels instead of treating every visual connection as proof of common control.
  3. Test the difficult transitions. Examine whether the path crosses a bridge, centralized service, smart contract, mixer, swap or conversion. Confirm that the product supports the particular chain and activity, and identify where its view ends.
  4. Build a reproducible case record. Preserve relevant transaction data, graphs, notes and attribution context in the case workflow or export. A useful record should let another analyst understand which ledger facts and provider interpretations support each lead.
  5. Take appropriate external steps. Where an address is linked to a VASP, investigators may need legal process to seek identifying records. A freeze or recovery may also depend on cooperation from an exchange, stablecoin issuer or other relevant authority.

Analytics platforms are one part of the investigative workflow, not a substitute for legal authority, provider cooperation or the analyst’s assessment of evidence.

Provider comparison: stated capabilities and questions to test

The descriptions below summarize the providers’ own official materials and, for the broader provider list, the OSCE guide. They are not independent performance findings. A demonstration using representative case traces is more useful than treating feature descriptions as a ranking.

Provider Emphasis in reviewed material Questions for an agency
Chainalysis Its law-enforcement page describes Reactor for tracing funds across blockchains, automated cross-chain analytics, training and expert case support. It also lists SaaS, on-premises and FedRAMP Full Authorization deployment. Which chains and investigative paths relevant to your cases are covered? How does the product distinguish deterministic links from probabilistic indicators? What audit, export and deployment controls apply in your jurisdiction?
Elliptic Its government page claims analytics across 65+ blockchains and 250+ bridge protocols, with entity attribution, exportable graphs and transaction data, and modular delivery into government-owned or air-gapped systems. These are Elliptic’s coverage and product claims, not independently verified comparative figures. How are relevant asset and bridge coverage claims tested? What attribution provenance and audit information accompanies exports? How do updates work in the deployment model you require?
TRM Labs Its homepage describes TRM Forensics, threat intelligence, case services, training and the Beacon Network, which TRM says notifies VASPs in real time when law enforcement flags illicit funds. The homepage also publishes vendor-generated crime statistics and customer counts. Which functions are available to your organization and jurisdiction? How does network participation work? Can analysts explain and document the basis for intelligence or model outputs in a case?
Other providers named by the OSCE The OSCE guide lists Merkle Science, Bitquery, Blockchain Intelligence Group and Crystal, alongside Chainalysis, TRM Labs and Elliptic, as examples of reputable service providers. It does not rank them. Check current product scope, chain coverage, attribution methods, references, security and procurement terms directly; comparable evidence for these providers is not established here.

TRM’s homepage, accessed October 7, 2026, also claims that its services are used by 600+ government agencies and financial institutions across 75 countries. That is a vendor-published customer figure, not an independent measure of effectiveness.

What to evaluate before choosing a platform

  • Coverage for actual cases: Match supported chains, tokens, bridges and services to your casework. Ask the vendor to demonstrate representative traces, including the transitions your investigators encounter most often.
  • Attribution and uncertainty: Ask how entity information is sourced, reviewed, labeled for confidence and updated. Request provenance and a way to distinguish direct evidence from an inferred connection.
  • Obfuscation and stopping points: Test paths involving bridges, mixers, smart contracts, swaps and centralized services. Ask what the tool can resolve, where it stops, and what outside records, legal process or provider cooperation may be needed.
  • Case workflow and evidence: Inspect graph readability, collaboration features, notes, exports, evidence preservation and the ability to reproduce an analyst’s work.
  • Security and deployment: Confirm access controls, retention, deployment options and security conditions, especially if the agency requires an on-premises or air-gapped environment.
  • Training and case support: Compare onboarding, continuing training and access to case expertise as well as software features.
  • Commercial terms: Obtain current pricing and procurement terms directly. The reviewed materials do not provide comparable prices.

What the available numbers do—and do not—show

A 2023 TRM Labs survey of more than 300 U.S. and international law-enforcement professionals—93% of respondents were from U.S. organizations—offers context about respondents’ experience, not an independent product benchmark:

  • More than 40% said cryptocurrency was involved in their law-enforcement cases in 2023. Respondents expected that share to reach 51% by 2027; the latter is a survey expectation, not a measured outcome.
  • Among respondents who used blockchain analytics, 87% called the tools “very” or “extremely” important to success.
  • 92% identified collaboration with analytics providers and exchanges as key to solving cases; the report also says 64% had partnered with blockchain analytics companies.

Because the survey was commissioned by TRM Labs, its findings should be attributed to that survey and its respondents rather than treated as universal estimates. They indicate why agencies may consider analytics and coordination, but they do not establish which vendor performs best.

A 2023 academic paper on the Elliptic++ dataset illustrates the graph-analysis methods behind this field: the dataset contains more than 822,000 Bitcoin wallet addresses, 56 features per address and 1.27 million temporal interactions. Its graph views include transaction-to-transaction flows, address-to-address interactions, address-transaction links and user-entity clusters. This is an illustration of Bitcoin-specific research data and methods, not a validation of any provider’s performance across chains.
