Which PC Graphics Settings Matter Most for Image Quality and Performance?

Render scale, shadows, reflections and lighting are useful settings to test first—but their costs vary by game. Tune one option at a time and measure the result.

For the biggest potential changes, start with render resolution or render scale, then test shadows, reflections and lighting effects. Their visual payoff and performance cost vary by game, so lower settings selectively and measure the result instead of dropping everything to Low. Keep options that visibly improve the image for little cost on your PC.

Start with resolution and render scale

Resolution determines the number of pixels the game renders. Render scale changes the internal rendering resolution relative to your selected output resolution: above 100% can sharpen the image at a performance cost, while below 100% can improve performance but make details less clear.

If the game is running below your frame-rate target and the graphics processor is the limiting factor, try a modest render-scale reduction. Judge the result on your display at its normal viewing size, not only in a zoomed-in screenshot. Intel recommends treating resolution and other performance-critical options as game-specific adjustments, rather than assuming one universal best setting: Intel’s low-frame-rate guide.

Which settings are worth testing next?

Shadows

Higher shadow quality can produce smoother or more accurate shadows, but the techniques and rendering cost differ across games. Try Medium or Low if you need more performance, particularly in fast-paced games where small shadow-quality differences may be less noticeable during play. Compare the same scene before and after.

Reflections

Dynamic reflections can require substantial extra rendering work. Lowering their quality may help in games that use them heavily. Ray-traced reflections can show off-screen objects in reflective surfaces, but both their visual value and their cost depend on the game and implementation. NVIDIA’s Control graphics and performance guide illustrates the trade-off in that specific game; its results are not a general benchmark for other PCs or titles.

Lighting and ambient occlusion

Volumetric lighting creates effects such as visible light shafts and can be demanding. Ambient occlusion (AO) adds approximate contact shading where surfaces meet, helping corners and objects look less flat. The image benefit and cost depend on the game’s implementation. Intel’s developer guide says screen-space ambient occlusion is typically within 5–10% of frame GPU time in many modern game engines. That is an engine-level estimate, not a prediction for a particular game: Intel Processor Graphics Gen11 Developer and Optimization Guide.

  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Anti-aliasing

Anti-aliasing reduces jagged edges, but techniques vary in sharpness and performance cost. Supersampling can be especially demanding; if performance is limited, test a lower sample rate or a less GPU-intensive method. Look at edges and fine detail both in a still scene and while moving, since an option that looks clean in a screenshot may appear soft or unstable in motion. AMD’s guidance covers balancing visual quality against performance: Configure AMD Radeon Settings for Ultimate Gaming Experience.

Upscaling

When supported, DLSS, FSR and XeSS render the game internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct an image for the selected output resolution. This can improve performance, but the resulting image depends on the game, implementation, output resolution and supported hardware. XeSS offers Ultra Quality, Quality, Balanced and Performance modes; these are different quality/performance trade-offs, not guarantees of identical results from game to game. Intel explains XeSS modes here: Intel XeSS overview.

  • Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
  • Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
  • Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.

Compare an upscaler’s fine-detail stability and motion against its frame-rate benefit at your actual output resolution. Use it only if the image it produces is acceptable to you.

Texture filtering and tessellation

Anisotropic filtering can keep textures such as roads clearer when viewed at an angle or in the distance. AMD describes its performance cost as small, so it is often worth leaving enabled if you like the result. Texture-filtering quality generally has a relatively small performance impact in AMD’s guidance. Tessellation adds geometric detail; limiting it may help in games that use it heavily. These effects are less universal performance levers than resolution or demanding lighting and reflection options: AMD’s Radeon settings guidance.

How to tune settings without guessing

  1. Choose a target. Set the resolution you intend to play at and decide what frame rate feels right for that game and display.
  2. Establish a baseline. Start from the game’s default or a reasonable preset, then use a built-in benchmark or a repeatable scene. Note average FPS and, if available, frame-time or percentile measures.
  3. Change one option at a time. If performance falls short, test render scale, shadows, reflections and lighting first. Retest the same scene after each change so you can tell what helped.
  4. Compare the image in play. Check clarity, edges, shadows, reflections and motion at your normal viewing size. A setting that looks better in a static close-up may not matter to you during play.
  5. Spend performance headroom deliberately. If you meet your target with room to spare, raise the visual settings whose improvements you value most, then measure again.

AMD’s Game Advisor can report average FPS and 95th-percentile frame timing, and may recommend changes to resolution, render scale, anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion or presets. Its recommendations are a starting point; confirm them in the games and scenes you actually play: AMD Game Advisor information.

Why there is no universal best preset

The same setting can behave differently across games, graphics hardware and rendering techniques. A result from one game should not be treated as a forecast for another. For example, NVIDIA’s Control guide reports that changing its SSAO setting affected performance by about 4–5 FPS with ray tracing off and about 1–3 FPS with ray tracing on in its own test context. Those figures describe Control’s test, not a typical cost for SSAO on other systems.

When comparing options, consider four things together: the visible improvement in motion at your intended output resolution, the measured average FPS and frame-time behavior in the same scene, the game and hardware implementation, and whether you prioritize fidelity, smoothness or responsiveness. If carefully chosen settings still cannot meet your target at your preferred resolution, a faster GPU may be one possible next step; changing settings does not require an upgrade.
