Neither approach has been shown to improve AI visibility on its own. A direct affiliate program is one way to run affiliate marketing; a network is another. The evidence available does not establish that a direct program earns more AI citations than a network program. What matters more is whether relevant partners publish useful, credible content that AI systems retrieve—and whether you measure citations separately from visits and sales.
First, separate the two choices
Affiliate marketing is the broader arrangement: a brand works with partners who may earn commission for referred business. A direct affiliate program is managed by the brand itself, while an affiliate network provides infrastructure and access to publishers participating in that network. These are different ways to organize partner relationships, not different kinds of content.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction matters for AI visibility. A program can help a brand recruit and manage partners; it cannot ensure that those partners publish coverage, that an AI system retrieves it, or that the system cites it in an answer. No reviewed study experimentally compares direct and network programs on AI citation outcomes.

| Decision area | Direct program | Network program |
|---|---|---|
| Partner relationships | The brand manages recruitment and relationships directly. | The brand works through a network’s partner ecosystem. |
| Program operations | The brand is responsible for its chosen tracking, payments, terms, and partner communications. | The network may provide program infrastructure; exact services and fees depend on the network and agreement. |
| AI visibility evidence | No proven citation advantage over a network program. | No proven citation disadvantage versus a direct program. |
The first two rows are implementation considerations, not measured AI outcomes. Compare the actual partner access, fees, operating workload, tracking, payment arrangements, and control available in the specific programs you are considering.

What the evidence says about affiliate content and AI citations
A 2026 Glass Digital study examined roughly 1,270 answers across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini. It used 25 prompts in each of three UK retail categories and ran them daily from August 26–28, 2026. The prompts covered buying decisions, comparisons, problem-solving, specifications and safety, and purchase availability.
In that study, 420 of 479 retrievals to commercially classifiable editorial pages involved pages carrying affiliate links (87.7%). This describes the study’s observed editorial sources; it does not show that affiliate links or affiliate programs caused AI systems to cite those pages. Glass Digital’s author, Marc Swann, explicitly says the study does not establish that having an affiliate program causes a brand to be named in an answer.
Rank #2
| UK retail category in the Glass Digital study | Affiliate-linked editorial sources as a share of all retrieved sources |
|---|---|
| Kitchenware | 29.6% |
| Automotive parts | 7.8% |
| Designer furniture | 10.2% |
Those category-specific shares differ substantially and should not be treated as forecasts for other sectors. The study also found that review publishers and specialist blogs were more likely to produce retrievable editorial mentions than cashback or voucher partners, and that the brand’s own domain was the most-retrieved single source in each tested category. The practical signal is to assess the relevance and substance of partner content, not simply to count affiliate relationships.

AI visibility is not the same as traffic or sales
Google Search leadership says that AI Overviews and AI Mode can support longer, more complex questions and show links with citations and inline attribution. Liz Reid, Google’s VP and Head of Search, described AI responses as featuring “prominent links, visible citation of sources, and in-line attribution.” Google also reported relatively stable aggregate organic click volume year over year and increased click quality. Those are Google’s own claims; the company also acknowledged that traffic trends are shifting among sites and that some quick-answer searches end without a click.

Independent browsing data show why a visible citation should not be counted as a visit. Pew Research Center analyzed browsing by 900 US adults in March 2025, covering 68,879 unique Google searches; 12,593 displayed an AI summary. On visits to Google pages with a summary, 8% resulted in a click on a traditional search result, compared with 15% on pages without one. A link within the AI summary itself was clicked on 1% of visits to pages with a summary. Pew’s results describe Google during that collection period, not every AI service or today’s results in every market.
A separate peer-reviewed Marketing Science study analyzed 12 months of data from 973 e-commerce websites and more than 50,000 ChatGPT transactions. Its comparison of ChatGPT referrals with other channels changes depending on the performance measure used. It studies referral-channel outcomes, not whether a brand’s direct or network affiliate structure earns citations.

Keep these outcomes separate in reporting:
- Visibility: whether a brand is mentioned and which URLs an AI answer cites.
- Referral: sessions arriving from AI platforms or conventional search, recorded separately where measurement permits.
- Business outcome: qualified engagement, conversion, and revenue attributed under a stated method.
- Incrementality: whether the program generated business that would not otherwise have occurred, rather than merely receiving credit for a sale.
Choose partners for the content they can produce
For a visibility-focused pilot, prioritize partners whose audience and expertise fit the category and who can create pages that answer real questions: independent reviews, comparisons, specialist explainers, and useful product information. A cashback or voucher partner may serve a valid commercial purpose, but the Glass Digital study observed review publishers and specialist blogs more often among retrievable editorial mentions.
Judge each partner on the work they publish, not on the assumption that commission status itself improves discoverability. Seek accurate coverage and clear disclosure of commercial relationships. Do not require favorable reviews, pay for a guaranteed citation, or treat affiliate links as a way to manipulate search rankings.

How to evaluate direct and network options
Compare the options against your own category and business goals. The relevant questions are operational as well as editorial:
- Partner access: Can the program reach the publishers and specialists whose content is relevant to your customers?
- Content quality: Are partners producing substantive, accurate editorial pages, or mostly promotion and coupon listings?
- Market fit: Do the partner mix and the questions customers ask resemble your category and geography?
- Measurement: Can you monitor brand mentions and cited URLs as well as referral sessions, conversions, and revenue?
- Economics: What are the fees, partner costs, recruitment workload, payment operations, and tracking constraints?
- Independence and compliance: Are commercial relationships disclosed, and can publishers give an honest assessment?
Do not select an attribution method simply because it awards the affiliate channel more credit. An impact.com survey of 818 marketers across eight countries in 2025 reported that 94% of brands were experimenting with or planning to adopt alternative attribution models within the next year. That vendor-sponsored survey indicates interest in attribution changes; it is not proof that a particular model or affiliate structure improves AI visibility.
Run a pilot that can distinguish citations from conversions
- Define the outcome. Decide whether the pilot is intended to increase AI mentions, qualified referral visits, sales, or incremental sales. Do not use one metric as a stand-in for the others.
- Set a baseline. Choose representative customer prompts, markets, and AI services. Record whether the brand appears, the exact cited URLs, and whether sources are the brand’s own site, publishers, retailers, or communities.
- Specify the partner cohort. Recruit a defined group of relevant editorial or specialist partners through the direct or network arrangement being evaluated. Keep the partner type and program terms clear enough to interpret the result.
- Repeat the same checks over time. Use the same prompts and record the engine, geography, date range, and method. AI answers vary, so a single answer or visibility score cannot represent performance everywhere.
- Report the metrics separately. Compare mentions and citations with AI-referred sessions, conventional search referrals, qualified engagement, conversion, revenue, partner cost, and an appropriate incrementality analysis.
This is a measurement approach, not a proven causal testing formula. The cited category study covered three UK retail categories over three days, while the Pew study was limited to Google browsing in the US during March 2025; neither establishes a universal direct-versus-network effect.

Google Search Central’s link guidance advises qualifying paid links appropriately and warns against excessive sponsored or guest-post links that are not properly tagged. It emphasizes useful, high-quality content over link manipulation. Google Search Quality Analyst Duy Nguyen put the point plainly: “Focusing on producing high quality content and improving user experience always wins out compared to manipulating links.” Check Google’s current guidance before implementation because the cited post dates to July 2021.
