After a OnePlus beta update, first confirm the exact build and read the changelog for your model and region. Then test lock-screen notifications, everyday apps, privacy permissions, network connections and battery behaviour. These checks help separate an intentional feature change or app-compatibility problem from a setting that actually changed; a beta update should not be assumed to reset every setting.
OnePlus describes beta software as less stable than a public OTA release. Its OxygenOS team wrote of an Open Beta build for the OnePlus Open: “These builds may be less stable and reliable than our official public OTA releases.” Make a current backup before investigating, even where the announcement says the upgrade is designed not to clear data.

Start with the build, model and release channel
A post-update symptom has meaning only in the context of the software that produced it. A public update summary can combine several OnePlus models, while features and rollout timing vary by device. Before changing anything, record the information shown on the phone.

- Open the phone’s Settings app and look for About device, About phone or a similarly named page. Menu labels vary by OxygenOS version.
- Write down the exact model, regional variant, OxygenOS version or build number, Android version and security-patch date.
- Open the software-update page and identify whether the phone is on a beta, stable, preview or other release channel. Some regional programs use different branding, including ColorOS wording in particular beta listings.
- Note when the update installed and whether the behaviour appeared immediately or only after another app updated.
Do not use another model’s instructions to diagnose your phone. The same OxygenOS generation can expose different features, gestures and recovery packages on different hardware or in different countries.

Read the changelog shown for your device
Check the changelog attached to the update on the phone, then compare it with the official announcement for that exact model and channel. Public summaries may merge several devices, so a feature listed in a general article is not proof that your handset received it.
Look specifically for entries under system interface, notifications, lock screen, privacy, connectivity, battery or known issues. Treat an item described as a design adjustment as an intentional behaviour change rather than evidence that your preferences were wiped. OnePlus’s May 2026 FAQ, for example, says that after an OxygenOS 16 upgrade, “the original swipe down gesture to expand the notification bar has been removed.” That statement answers a particular OxygenOS 16 feature question; it does not establish that every OnePlus model or every beta removes the gesture.
If the phone’s own changelog is silent, record the symptom and continue with the checks below before attempting a reset. A missing option can be a changed interface, a staged feature, a regional difference or a defect; the build number determines which explanation is plausible.

Check notifications and lock-screen behaviour
Notifications are the most visible place to notice an update-related change. Test both the locked and unlocked states instead of relying on a single notification.
- Lock the phone and send yourself a test message or reminder. Confirm whether the alert appears on the lock screen, whether its content is hidden or shown as expected, and whether the icon remains visible.
- Unlock the phone and pull down the notification shade. Check that alerts arrive, can be expanded, and can be dismissed or snoozed normally.
- Test the gesture you used before the update. If a swipe down from the lock screen no longer expands the notification bar, compare the result with the OxygenOS 16 changelog before treating it as a reset.
- Open notification settings for one frequently used app and verify its alert permission, sound or vibration choice, lock-screen visibility and category-level controls.
These are behaviour checks, not a claim that OnePlus routinely changes notification settings in every beta. If only one application is affected, investigate that app’s permission and update status first. If every app behaves differently and the changelog mentions a redesigned lock screen or shade, follow the new interaction described by OnePlus.

Test the apps you depend on
OnePlus warns that third-party applications can have compatibility problems after beta upgrades. Its beta guidance lists crashes, lag, black screens and excessive power use among possible symptoms, and recommends updating applications to reduce problems.
- Open the apps you use for authentication, messaging, work, payments, navigation, cameras, media and backups.
- Install all available updates from the relevant app store. A beta operating-system change can expose an issue that the app developer has already fixed in a newer release.
- Repeat the action that failed: sign in, play media, attach a file, use the camera, connect to a service or complete a payment. Note whether the failure is reproducible.
- Compare two or three unrelated apps. A single crash points more strongly to an app-compatibility problem; a system-wide failure warrants checking the build’s known issues.
- Watch for delayed launches, frames that stop rendering, black screens, repeated crashes or unusual background battery use during the first day of normal use.
Do not conclude that an app’s crash proves its permissions or system settings were reset. Capture the app version, operating-system build and steps that reproduce the problem before contacting the developer or OnePlus support.
Review privacy and permission behaviour when it matters
Privacy settings are worth checking when an app suddenly loses access to a camera, microphone, location, photos or contacts, or when a permission prompt appears unexpectedly. The practical check is to verify the affected permission, not to assume that the beta changed every permission globally.
- Open Settings and use the privacy, security or permissions section to inspect the app named in the warning.
- Confirm whether access is allowed, denied, limited to use while the app is open, or set to ask each time.
- Check privacy indicators when the camera or microphone is active and review the system privacy dashboard if the phone provides one.
- For a work profile, banking app or authenticator, verify that the profile is still present and that its administrator has not imposed a new policy.
If the permission value is unchanged but the app still fails, return to the compatibility checks rather than changing unrelated privacy controls.
Verify mobile, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections
Connectivity changes can look like a reset because an update may alter a network interface, modem component or device-driver behaviour. Test each connection that you actually use.

- Place a normal call and send a text message if your plan supports them. Check mobile data on both a strong and a weak signal.
- Connect to your usual Wi-Fi network, browse several sites and move between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Confirm that the phone reconnects after leaving and returning to the network.
- Pair a Bluetooth accessory such as headphones, a car system or a watch. Test audio, controls and reconnection after restarting the phone.
- Check hotspot or VPN use only if those functions are part of your normal setup; a beta issue may affect one network path without changing saved settings.
If a saved network disappeared, verify the network list and password before resetting network settings. If the network remains saved but fails to connect, record the error and compare it with the build’s known-issue notes.

A beta can expose compatibility problems that appear as excess power use, but a single percentage drop immediately after installation is not enough to establish a permanent battery change. Indexing, app updates and media restoration can create temporary activity.
- Confirm that the charger, cable and charging mode you normally use are recognised.
- Check whether the phone reaches the expected charging speed and whether charging pauses or resumes normally.
- Review the battery screen for an app with unusual foreground or background use.
- Compare standby drain overnight and screen-on time with your usual pattern after the phone has completed pending app updates.
- Check battery-saver, background-activity and adaptive-battery choices only when the symptom points to one of them.
Do not label a setting as reset solely because battery life changed. Correlate the drain with an app, network condition or documented known issue first.
Separate an intentional change from a reset
Use three questions for every unexpected difference:
- Is it documented? Search the exact build’s changelog and model-specific FAQ. The lock-screen swipe-down change documented for an OxygenOS 16 FAQ is an example of a deliberate design adjustment.
- Is it local? A single app, network or account can fail while the rest of the phone behaves normally. Local failures are less evidence of a system-wide settings reset.
- Is the value actually different? Open the relevant setting and record its current value. A different gesture or menu location is not the same as a changed permission, notification category or network credential.
Keep screenshots of the affected page and the About device screen. They make a support report actionable and prevent confusion if a later beta changes the interface again.

Troubleshoot in the least destructive order
Start with reversible actions. Install pending app updates, restart once, reproduce the issue and consult the exact release notes or known-issue guidance. Avoid a factory reset merely because an interface looks different.
One app crashes or shows a black screen
Update the app, force-close it, restart the phone and test again. If the problem remains limited to that app, report the operating-system build to the app developer and OnePlus rather than erasing the phone.
Notifications fail for one app
Inspect that app’s notification permission, category controls, battery background policy and lock-screen visibility. Send a test alert after each change so you know which adjustment mattered.
The lock screen or shade behaves differently everywhere
Compare the gesture and layout with the build-specific changelog. A documented design change should be learned and reported if confusing; an undocumented failure should be captured with screenshots and submitted through the beta feedback route for that program.

Use only the model-specific remedy in OnePlus support guidance. One cited settings-reset procedure addresses a particular lock-screen password issue on some models and distinguishes Reset all settings from Erase all data. Selecting the data-erasure option can wipe the phone; do not choose it as a casual troubleshooting step.
Understand the consequences of rolling back
Rollback is not a routine way to undo a disliked interface. OnePlus’s cited beta rollback packages erase all contents, and the package, model, region and installation steps are specific to the device. A package for another model or regional variant can fail or create a serious recovery problem.
- Confirm that the symptom is severe enough to justify leaving the beta and that official rollback instructions exist for your exact model and region.
- Make and verify a backup of photos, messages, authenticator data, files and anything else that cannot be recreated.
- Read the rollback warning and package notes completely, including battery, storage and installation requirements.
- Use only the official package and procedure for the phone’s release channel. Do not substitute a package found for a similar-looking device.
- After rollback, restore data carefully and apply stable-system updates before judging battery, notifications or app behaviour.
The Open Beta announcement for the OnePlus Open also lists operational requirements above 30% battery and at least 4 GB of free storage. Those thresholds belong to that particular announcement, not to every OnePlus beta or rollback process; follow the figures published for your own device.
Staying on beta versus returning to stable

This is a risk decision, not a preference toggle. A stable release may be more suitable for a primary work or emergency phone, while a test device can tolerate more failures. In either case, use the phone’s own changelog and official program instructions to resolve model-specific differences.

The title of a beta program, the route into its enrollment page and the available settings can change by country, model and software generation. OnePlus’s May 2026 FAQ gives a route for the software discussed there, but that route is not universal. Follow the labels shown on your phone rather than copying a menu path from a different OxygenOS version.
When asking for help, include the model and region, exact build, beta or stable channel, installation date, affected app or feature, screenshots and the steps that reproduce the problem. This information lets support distinguish an intended changelog change from a regression without asking you to erase settings prematurely.
The practical rule is simple: verify the build, read its changelog, test the behaviours you rely on, update affected apps and choose destructive recovery actions only when the model-specific instructions and the severity of the problem justify them.
