Chapter 1018 is the first explicit manga introduction to Sun God Nika, and Episode 1040 is the anime adaptation of that legend (aired November 13, 2022). The decisive reveal that links Nika to Luffy’s Devil Fruit and Gear 5 comes in Chapter 1044 and Episode 1071 (aired August 6, 2023). Episode 1100 and the Elbaf material summarized in Volume 112 expand the history later.

Where the Sun God legend first appears
Chapter 1018 is the first explicit manga mention
Chapter 1018 is the correct answer when the question is “Which manga chapter introduces Sun God Nika?” During the conversation between Who’s-Who and Jinbe, Who’s-Who asks whether Jinbe knows the name and describes Nika as a legendary warrior. The story connects the legend to enslaved people in ancient times who believed that Nika would come to their rescue. This is the first point at which the manga names the figure directly and gives the reader a basic idea of what the myth represents.

The chapter does not yet identify Nika as Luffy, explain the Devil Fruit’s hidden name, or show Gear 5. It functions as a historical and thematic introduction: Nika is associated with liberation, hope and the expectation that suffering people can be freed. Those limits matter because readers sometimes treat the first name-drop as if it were already the full reveal.
Episode 1040 adapts that first anime introduction
Episode 1040 is the anime’s first explicit Nika episode. Its official synopsis describes the same Who’s-Who and Jinbe discussion and the legend of a warrior whom slaves believed would save them. The episode aired on November 13, 2022. An official ONE PIECE.com commentary entry identifies the discussion with Weekly Shonen Jump issue 31 and Chapter 1018, confirming the manga-to-anime correspondence.

If you are watching rather than reading, Episode 1040 is therefore the place to begin the named Nika lore. Earlier episodes may contain imagery, themes or discussions that become more meaningful in hindsight, but the cited chronology does not establish an earlier episode that explicitly names Sun God Nika.
When the story identifies Nika with Luffy’s power
Chapter 1044 is the manga’s decisive reveal
Chapter 1044 changes the question from “Who is the legendary Nika?” to “What is Nika’s connection to Luffy?” The chapter reveals that the Devil Fruit commonly known as the Gum-Gum Fruit has another name: the Mythical Zoan Human-Human Fruit, Model Nika. It also presents the awakening that produces Luffy’s Gear 5 state.
The chapter supplies the identity-and-power connection that Chapter 1018 deliberately withholds. Nika is described as the “Warrior of Liberation,” and Luffy’s awakened abilities are placed inside that mythology. In practical reading terms, Chapter 1044 is the point to use when someone asks when Luffy becomes, or is revealed as, the Sun God in the story. The wording is best understood as a narrative identification of Luffy’s awakened fruit and role, not as a separate character suddenly arriving in the cast.

Episode 1071 is the animated Gear 5 and Model Nika reveal
Episode 1071 is the anime counterpart to the Chapter 1044 reveal. It aired on August 6, 2023, and its official synopsis states the Gum-Gum Fruit’s other name, identifies Nika as the Warrior of Liberation, and introduces Luffy’s Gear 5 form. The official episode page maps the adaptation to Volume 103 and the broad Chapter 1036–1046 range, which contains Chapter 1044.

That range notation is useful when collecting physical volumes or locating the scene in a digital reader: Episode 1071 is an adaptation of a stretch of chapters, while Chapter 1044 is the specific manga chapter for the naming and awakening reveal. The anime episode is consequently later than Episode 1040 by story chronology and by broadcast date, even though both concern the same mythology.
What Episode 1100 adds on Egghead
Episode 1100, aired April 7, 2024, is not the first Nika appearance or the first Gear 5 reveal. Its importance is explanatory. In the official synopsis, Vegapunk refers to Luffy’s Gear 5 form as the “Warrior of Liberation” and “Sun God Nika,” and says that the name was erased from history.
This checkpoint gives the world-building a historical dimension. The name is not merely an obscure story told by Who’s-Who; it has been suppressed or removed from the surviving record, which helps explain why different characters know fragments of the legend. For a chronological watch, place Episode 1100 after the Gear 5 reveal. For a lore-focused watch, use it to hear an in-story scientist articulate the connection that Episode 1071 dramatizes.

The Nika material continues beyond the initial reveal. ONE PIECE.com’s official synopsis for Volume 112, released July 4, 2025, says that the giants’ Harley text records the existence of Sun God Nika. This is a later manga expansion rather than a replacement for Chapters 1018 or 1044.

The synopsis establishes that Elbaf’s written tradition contains Nika material, but it does not by itself provide every panel-level detail of the Harley text. Readers citing a particular line, image or interpretation should check the exact chapter and edition they are using. The safe chronology is that the Elbaf reference comes after the legend’s naming and Luffy’s Model Nika reveal.
Choose your starting point by the question you are asking
You want the first time the name is spoken
Read Chapter 1018 or watch Episode 1040. This route gives you the original legend, the connection to ancient slaves and the idea of a liberating warrior before later revelations change its significance. Volume 101 is the relevant collected manga volume for Chapter 1018.
You want the answer to “When is Gear 5?”
Watch Episode 1071 or read Chapter 1044. Episode 1071 is the broadcast milestone most viewers use, while Chapter 1044 is the precise manga chapter. Volume 103 is the relevant collected volume for that reveal range.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou want the cleanest complete lore order
- Start with Chapter 1018 or Episode 1040 for the spoken legend.
- Continue to Chapter 1044 or Episode 1071 for the Model Nika and Gear 5 reveal.
- Read or watch the later Egghead material, including Episode 1100, for Vegapunk’s historical explanation.
- Continue into the Elbaf story and consult Volume 112’s Harley reference for the later mythology.
Do not substitute Episode 1071 for Episode 1040 if your goal is the first introduction. The former is the reveal of the fruit’s identity and awakening; the latter is where the anime first names and describes the legend.

Why the distinction between “legend” and “reveal” matters
The first mention is about other people’s hopes
In the Chapter 1018 and Episode 1040 material, Nika is presented through Who’s-Who’s account of what enslaved people believed. The emphasis is on expectation: a legendary rescuer associated with freedom and salvation. At this stage, the audience is learning what the name means to people in the world, not receiving a confirmed biography of Nika.
The later reveal is about Luffy’s awakened ability
Chapter 1044 and Episode 1071 move from folklore to mechanics and identity. The hidden name of Luffy’s fruit is disclosed, the Mythical Zoan classification is stated, and Gear 5 visualizes the awakening. This is why summaries that list only Episode 1071 answer a different question from readers asking where Nika lore first appears.
Vegapunk supplies historical framing
Episode 1100 adds an authoritative in-world explanation by linking Luffy with the erased Warrior of Liberation and Sun God Nika. It reinforces the historical suppression of the name, rather than introducing the legend for the first time.
Common questions answered precisely
Is Chapter 1018 or Chapter 1044 the first Nika chapter?
Chapter 1018 is first for the explicit legend. Chapter 1044 is first for the direct Model Nika and Gear 5 identity reveal. Both answers are correct only when the question specifies which kind of introduction it means.
