For most new players, buy OCTOPATH TRAVELER II. Choose the dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 edition if handheld play is your priority, or PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC for a fixed high-performance setup. Xbox and PC Game Pass are sensible access options while both games remain in the catalog. If you want both mainline games, buy the official two-game bundle rather than purchasing them separately.
OCTOPATH TRAVELER II or the original: which game should you start with?
The safest default for a first-time buyer is OCTOPATH TRAVELER II. It is the newer mainline release and is sold on every major platform covered by the current console and PC listings. Starting with it gives you the most current presentation without requiring you to own the first game.

Choose the original OCTOPATH TRAVELER instead when you specifically want to begin with the 2018-era release, prefer to play the series in release order, or find it at a substantially better price through a sale or subscription. The two games are separate purchases, so buying one does not automatically grant the other unless the store page identifies a bundle.
There is no need to buy both to make a first decision. Buy OCTOPATH TRAVELER II alone when you want one game and the newer starting point. Buy the bundle when you already know you want the complete two-game experience.

Which editions are actually available?
Edition names differ by platform, but the important distinction is between the two individual games and the official bundle containing both.
| Purchase | What it contains | Where it is listed | Best reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| OCTOPATH TRAVELER | The first mainline game | PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Steam and Windows listings; availability also varies by storefront | You want the original release or release-order play |
| OCTOPATH TRAVELER II | The newer mainline game | PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 listings | You want the recommended starting point |
| OCTOPATH TRAVELER I and II bundle | OCTOPATH TRAVELER and OCTOPATH TRAVELER II | Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Steam and Windows, according to the official bundle listing | You want both games in one purchase |
| Nintendo Switch 2 edition of OCTOPATH TRAVELER II | A dedicated Switch 2 version of the second game | Nintendo Switch 2 | You want Nintendo portability with the newer hardware optimization |
Square Enix’s platform announcement identifies OCTOPATH TRAVELER on PS5 and PS4 and OCTOPATH TRAVELER II on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, while also bringing the games to PC. The same announcement says both are available through Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass. Storefront availability can change by region, so check the product page for your account country before paying.
Platform comparison at a glance
| Platform | Portability | Game options | Why choose it | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Handheld and docked | Dedicated OCTOPATH TRAVELER II edition; Square Enix also describes both games as optimized for Switch 2 | Best Nintendo option when you want handheld play and the newer hardware | Check the edition separately from the original Switch release; a Prologue Demo save is not compatible with the Switch 2 version |
| Nintendo Switch | Handheld and docked | Both mainline games and the bundle are listed | Lowest-cost route into Nintendo’s existing library when you do not own Switch 2 | It does not provide the dedicated Switch 2 edition’s documented optimization |
| PS5 | Fixed console | Both games and the bundle are listed | Strong choice for a living-room setup and current PlayStation hardware | No handheld play; confirm whether you are buying an individual game or the bundle |
| Xbox Series X|S | Fixed console | Both games, the bundle, Game Pass access and Xbox Cloud Gaming listing for OCTOPATH TRAVELER II | Best fit if you already use Xbox or want a subscription route | Game Pass catalog membership can change; verify availability before relying on it |
| PC | Portable only with a compatible laptop or handheld PC | Steam and Windows listings; both games and the bundle are listed | Flexible hardware, scalable settings and Steam account features | Performance depends on your hardware and operating system; Game Pass PC catalog status can change |
Why Switch 2 is the handheld-first choice
Nintendo lists a dedicated OCTOPATH TRAVELER II for Nintendo Switch 2 edition. Square Enix’s Switch 2 press information says both mainline games were optimized with improved resolution and frame rate. That makes Switch 2 the logical purchase when you value playing in handheld mode but still want the newer Nintendo hardware target.

Do not assume that every Switch package is the same product. Look for the Switch 2 edition label on the store page or box. If you already downloaded the Prologue Demo, Nintendo warns that its save data is not compatible with the Switch 2 version. Plan to begin again rather than treating the demo save as transferable progress.
The original Nintendo Switch remains a reasonable choice if you already own the console, find a lower price, or do not need the Switch 2 optimization. It is also the Nintendo platform named for the official two-game bundle. The trade-off is that you are choosing the older hardware target rather than the dedicated Switch 2 edition.
When PS5 is the better purchase
Choose PS5 when the console is already your main gaming system and you do not need a handheld mode. PlayStation’s official listing includes OCTOPATH TRAVELER II for PS4 and PS5, and the official two-game bundle is listed for both generations.

- Embark on an adventure of your own creation. The latest in the OCTOPATH TRAVELER series.
- New story content – Experience original, streamlined story content and quests with new paths to achieve.
- Character creation – Create a customized protagonist with unique appearance, voice, motions and more.
- Town building system – Rebuild the protagonist's town as the story progresses with evolving town reconstruction mechanics and development while inviting new people to live in the town.*
- HD-2D Visuals – The series’ iconic graphic style returns, bringing a striking blend of retro 2D characters in a beautiful 3D world.
Buying for PS5 is simplest when you want a permanent console purchase and intend to play from a television or monitor. Before checkout, verify the platform line: a PS4 listing may run on different hardware from the PS5 edition, while a bundle page may be separate from either individual game.
When Xbox or Game Pass makes more sense
Xbox is the strongest value-oriented route when subscription access matters more than permanent ownership. The official Xbox store lists OCTOPATH TRAVELER II for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Xbox Cloud Gaming, and it displays a two-game bundle option. Square Enix also states that both games are available through Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.
Game Pass access is a license for as long as the games remain in the applicable catalog and you maintain the required subscription. Catalogs, tiers and regional availability can change, so check the current Game Pass listing immediately before starting. If you want to keep playing without depending on catalog status, purchase the individual game or the bundle instead.

Choose Xbox Series X|S when you want a fixed console, Xbox ecosystem features or cloud access where supported. Choose PC Game Pass when you prefer Windows play and already subscribe to the PC tier. The subscription decision is separate from the edition decision: you can start with OCTOPATH TRAVELER II through Game Pass and later buy a game if you want permanent access.

PC is the most flexible fixed-platform choice. OCTOPATH TRAVELER II’s Steam listing identifies it as a single-player game and includes Steam achievements, trading cards, cloud saves and family sharing. The official bundle is also listed for Steam and Windows.

Should you buy one game or the two-game bundle?
Buy OCTOPATH TRAVELER II alone when:
- You are new to the series and want the clearest default recommendation.
- You want to limit the initial purchase to one game.
- You have access through a subscription but may later decide whether the first game is worth adding.
- You are specifically buying the dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 edition.
Buy OCTOPATH TRAVELER alone when:
- You prefer release-order play.
- You find the first game at a lower confirmed price on your chosen platform.
- You want to experience the original before moving to the sequel.
Buy the official bundle when:
- You already intend to play both mainline games.
- You want one transaction covering the two-game library.
- Your platform’s bundle listing is cheaper than buying the individual editions at that time.
Compare the live total rather than assuming the bundle is always cheaper. Prices and promotions vary by region and storefront, while the bundle’s supported platforms are explicitly listed as Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Steam and Windows.
How to make the purchase without choosing the wrong version
- Decide whether you want one game or both. Select OCTOPATH TRAVELER II for the recommended single-game starting point, or the official bundle for both.
- Choose your play style. Select Switch 2 or Switch for integrated handheld play; select PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC for a fixed high-performance setup.
- Match the store page to your hardware. Check the exact platform label—Switch 2, Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Steam or Windows—before adding it to your cart.
- Check subscription status. If you are using Xbox Game Pass or PC Game Pass, confirm that the game is currently in your regional catalog and that your tier includes it.
- Check saves and demos. If you used the Prologue Demo, do not count on that save working with the Switch 2 edition; Nintendo says it is incompatible.
- Confirm ownership expectations. A subscription grants access while the catalog and membership permit it; a purchase is the appropriate route when you want a lasting license.
What the sales figures tell you—and what they do not
Square Enix reported more than 7 million copies worldwide in 2026 across the series. The Steam listing for the first installment cites over 3 million copies worldwide at the time that page was published in 2023. These figures indicate broad commercial reach, but they do not identify the best platform for your particular setup, nor do they guarantee identical performance across editions.
