Three providers in the available evidence have dated no-logs assessment claims worth comparing: Proton VPN, NordVPN and ExpressVPN. Their audits differ in scope, timing and report access, so they are evidence to examine—not a basis for declaring one universally best or proving future conduct.
What does a no-logs VPN audit actually establish?
An audit is a time-bounded examination of specified systems, controls and procedures. Its conclusion applies to the systems and period examined; it cannot establish that a provider will behave the same way indefinitely or that every system was covered. The scope and the auditor’s conclusion matter as much as the word “audit.”

A VPN also shifts trust from the internet connection to the VPN operator; it does not make a person anonymous. Websites can identify people who sign in or share identifying information, and browser fingerprinting can still distinguish a device or browser.

How the providers’ published audit evidence differs

These are provider-reported descriptions of assessments, not a standardized comparison of every provider’s logging practices. In particular, an audit count is not a quality score: methods, scope, recurrence and report transparency differ.

Which VPN has the strongest evidence for your priorities?
There is no defensible overall winner from these audit summaries alone. Use the distinction that matters to you:
- Want to inspect the report directly: Proton’s announcement links the full Securitum report. NordVPN says a Nord Account is needed to read its full report; the available ExpressVPN announcement does not establish full-report access.
- Care about named server categories: NordVPN’s announcement specifically lists standard VPN, Double VPN, obfuscated servers and Onion Over VPN in the reviewed scope.
- Care about a named infrastructure and policy assessment: ExpressVPN’s announcement identifies TrustedServer and privacy-policy claims, assessed as of February 28, 2025.
- Want a recurring audit record and public report: Proton describes its 2026 assessment as the fifth consecutive annual no-logs audit and links the report.
These distinctions help assess the evidence, not predict speed, streaming performance, ease of use or suitability for a particular device. The sources here do not provide comparable performance testing or current prices.

How to evaluate a no-logs claim before choosing
- Read the scope. Check which infrastructure, policies, server types and controls the assessment actually covers. A privacy-policy review, server assessment and broader operational examination are not interchangeable.
- Check the assessment date. Treat a conclusion as evidence about the examined period, not a guarantee about later operations.
- Look for the auditor’s conclusion. Separate the auditor’s wording from the VPN provider’s summary, and consult the full report when it is available.
- Consider transparency separately. Public access to a report makes it easier for readers to inspect scope and qualifications; restricted access is a limitation on what a prospective customer can independently verify.
- Assess your remaining privacy risks. A VPN cannot prevent a signed-in website from recognizing your account or eliminate browser fingerprinting. Consider what information you share and which accounts you use.
What other evidence says about Proton’s no-logs claim
Proton says it could not comply with a 2019 legal request for logs because the requested logs did not exist. That is the provider’s account of the case; it is a separate kind of evidence from a later independent audit and should not be treated as proof of every aspect of current operations.

The dated evidence described here supports comparison of these three providers. It does not provide equivalent, current audit evidence for seven VPNs, nor a common basis to rank providers on performance, streaming, price or ease of use. Adding more names without similarly specific evidence would make the list look more comprehensive without making it more reliable.
