To fix a color profile error in Windows 11, check the profile assigned to the affected display, remove a clearly incorrect custom profile or add the correct one, and set it as that display’s default. Go to Settings > System > Display > Color profile. Select the affected monitor before making changes; profile errors do not all have the same cause, and HDR or app-specific color problems may need a different fix.
First, identify what kind of color problem you have
A profile-management error means Windows cannot use, find, or retain a profile. A color appearance problem means colors look washed out, tinted, or inconsistent between apps. These symptoms can overlap, but changing a profile and calibrating a display are different tasks.

- Missing, unwanted, or incorrect profile: Use the per-display profile controls in Windows Color profile settings.
- Different colors between apps: If the display supports it, consider Automatically manage color for apps. This setting is not a fix for a profile that will not install or keeps disappearing.
- HDR display or HDR video looks wrong: Use the relevant HDR calibration path below; it is separate from assigning an existing profile.
Correct the profile assigned to the affected display
- Open Settings > System > Display > Color profile.
- Select the display that has the problem. On a multi-monitor setup, verify the selected display before adding or removing anything.
- Expand the suspect profile and choose Remove, or choose Add profile and locate the correct profile for that exact display.
- Choose Set profile for the profile you want Windows to use by default on that display.
Microsoft documents how to add a profile but does not provide one universal download for every monitor. Use a profile intended for your specific display; a profile for another monitor is not automatically interchangeable. These controls manage an existing profile assignment. Calibration, by contrast, creates or adjusts a profile.

Use automatic color management only for the problem it addresses
In Settings > System > Display > Color profile, turn on Automatically manage color for apps if the option is available and you are addressing inconsistent color between apps. Microsoft describes this as system-level color management for supported displays. It does not replace choosing the correct profile for the monitor, and it is not a universal repair for installation or persistence errors. Details are in Microsoft’s display color settings guidance.
Choose the right calibration path for HDR
| Situation | Path | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong, missing, or unwanted profile on a regular display | Settings > System > Display > Color profile | Select the display, then add or remove a profile and set the intended default. |
| Color differs between apps on a supported display | Color profile > Automatically manage color for apps | Availability depends on display support; it is not a substitute for the correct monitor profile. |
| HDR-capable built-in or external display | Windows HDR Calibration app, if the requirements are met | Run the app on the HDR display being calibrated. |
| HDR video on a laptop’s built-in screen | Display calibration for HDR video | This built-in Windows calibration path works only with built-in displays. |
Calibrate an HDR-capable display with the Windows HDR Calibration app
Microsoft’s HDR Calibration app guidance lists these requirements: Windows 11, an HDR-capable display with HDR enabled, full-screen app mode, and a sufficiently recent GPU and display driver. The page specifies WDDM 2.7 or later and gives examples: AMD RX 400 Series or later, AMD Ryzen processors with Radeon Graphics, Intel 11th Gen integrated graphics or later or Intel DG1 or later discrete graphics, and NVIDIA GTX 10xx or later. These are requirements for this HDR app, not for ordinary ICC profile management.

Display the app on the HDR monitor you want to calibrate. Microsoft advises running it again after a display setup change, such as adding or replacing a display. To remove a profile created by the app, open Control Panel > Color Management > All Profiles, select the profile, and choose Remove.
Calibrate HDR video on a built-in display
For HDR video on a built-in screen, open Settings > System > Display > HDR, then choose Display calibration for HDR video > Calibrate. Microsoft says this feature works only with built-in displays and cannot calibrate an external monitor. The page includes Restore default if you need to undo its calibration. See Microsoft’s built-in HDR calibration instructions.

If the profile error persists, collect the details that narrow it down
A generic “profile error” message does not establish whether the cause is the profile, HDR, a driver, or a particular app. Before seeking help, record:
- The exact error text and when it appears.
- The monitor make and model, and whether it is built in or external.
- Whether HDR is enabled.
- The profile filename and where the profile came from.
- Whether the problem affects one app or Windows more broadly.
Those details help separate a bad profile assignment from an HDR calibration issue or an app-specific symptom. Microsoft’s official guidance covers profile management and calibration, but does not prescribe one cause or fix for every profile error.
