A registrar API and a DNS interface control different parts of a domain. The registrar side handles registration and administrative actions, including eligible transfers between registrars. The DNS side controls which authoritative nameservers serve the domain and the records they publish. A tenant migration may require changing one, both, or neither. Plan registrar transfer, nameserver delegation, and DNS-zone migration as separate work items, each with an owner and an explicit change scope.
What is the difference between a registrar and DNS hosting?
A registrar is part of the domain-registration path: it provides the registrant-facing controls for provisioning and administration, and its backend communicates with the registry. DNS hosting is where the authoritative DNS configuration is managed. A domain can stay registered at one company while its DNS is hosted elsewhere.

ICANN’s 2023 Universal Acceptance Roadmap for Registry and Registrar Systems describes registrants using registrar interfaces for provisioning actions and registrar backends interacting with registry backends through EPP. Some providers also expose REST APIs, but ICANN does not require those additional interfaces. “Registrar API” therefore does not mean one standardized set of operations: check the actual provider’s supported actions, authentication, errors, and manual alternatives.
DNS has two related but separate layers. Delegation tells the TLD or registry which authoritative nameservers to use. The zone is the DNS configuration served by those nameservers, including records such as A, AAAA, MX, TXT, and their values and TTLs. ICANN’s Guidance for Domain Name Orders distinguishes changing DNS authority from changing the domain’s zone configuration.

Do I need to transfer my domain registrar to change DNS?
No. You can change the nameservers delegated for a domain, or edit records at the DNS provider that hosts its zone, without changing the registrar. Conversely, a registrar transfer changes the registrar of record; it is not by itself a nameserver change or a complete DNS-zone migration. ICANN’s registrant transfer FAQ treats changing web-hosting providers and updating nameservers or hosting IP addresses as options separate from transferring registrars.
For a tenant migration, identify the precise outcome required: a new registrar, new DNS authority, new zone contents, or some combination. Do not schedule a registrar transfer merely because a website or email service is moving.

Does changing registrars move my DNS records?
Do not assume it does. Registration-data rules mention nameserver and DNSSEC information in specified circumstances, but those elements are not the complete authoritative DNS zone, DNS-provider account, signing keys, or tenant services. ICANN’s Registration Data Policy and its DNS-order guidance do not establish that a registrar transfer copies a provider’s full zone or credentials.
Keep these migration objects distinct:
- Registrar of record: which registrar manages the registration.
- Delegation: which authoritative nameservers the registry points to.
- Zone contents: the records and values published by the authoritative DNS service.
- DNSSEC coordination: whether DNSSEC is enabled and what DS or key information must remain consistent during a change.
- Tenant services: website, email, verification, and other services that depend on DNS records or provider accounts.
What does a registrar API control?
It depends on the registrar’s implementation. Registrar-facing interfaces commonly support domain provisioning and administrative operations, and inter-registrar transfer workflows involve the registrar and registry. A provider may offer additional API methods, but the existence of an API does not prove that it can export DNS zones, edit records, or administer a separate DNS-hosting account.

Before automating a migration, verify the provider’s documentation for the exact operation and account permissions. Confirm whether the API can perform the required registrar action, whether it can change nameserver delegation, and whether DNS records are managed through a distinct interface. Record manual fallback steps and expected authorization requirements; behavior is provider-specific.
Can I move my website or email without transferring the domain?
Yes. Website or email services can move while the domain remains at its current registrar. The relevant work may be editing records in the existing zone, changing delegation to new authoritative nameservers, or both, depending on the target service and DNS setup. A registrar transfer is only necessary if changing the registrar itself is part of the migration scope.

Keep control of the existing DNS zone until the replacement is prepared and the required records have been checked. Website and email can depend on different records, so include all service records and verification entries relevant to the tenant rather than treating the website’s address as the whole zone.
What should I check before changing nameservers during a tenant migration?
Use a change plan that names the owner, authorization, data, and rollback dependency for each control plane. Changing delegation without preparing the destination zone can make services unavailable or inconsistent; changing zone records at a provider that is no longer authoritative will not affect public resolution.

- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
- Define scope: list separately whether the registrar is changing, whether delegation is changing, and whether the zone is being copied or edited.
- Identify control owners: record who can access the registrar account, DNS host, tenant administration, and any approval process for each change.
- Check registration eligibility: confirm the domain’s status, transfer lock, authorization contact, and the actual registrar and TLD procedures before selecting a date.
- Inventory DNS: capture current authoritative nameservers, all relevant records and TTLs, DNSSEC status, and any DS/key coordination needed. Confirm which party can export and import the zone; provider-specific behavior is not guaranteed by ICANN policy.
- Prepare and verify the destination: ensure the intended authoritative service has the required zone data before changing delegation, and verify tenant-dependent records with the relevant service owners.
- Schedule the intended change only: obtain required approvals and credentials, then execute the registrar transfer, delegation update, or zone change as separate authorized actions rather than treating them as one operation.
When can an inter-registrar transfer be delayed?
For gTLDs covered by ICANN’s transfer rules, the registered name holder is the authority to approve or deny a transfer request, and a gaining registrar has specified responsibilities. Under the ICANN Transfer Policy (updated in 2024), the registry generally completes a transfer unless it receives a NACK from the registrar of record within five calendar days. That processing window is not a guarantee that every domain is immediately transferable.
ICANN’s FAQ describes possible 60-day restrictions after initial registration, certain registrant contact-data changes, or a prior transfer. Applicability and any permitted opt-out depend on the policy and registrar. Check the domain’s current status and the exact TLD/provider process rather than assuming a universal eligibility date. The policy context here is ICANN gTLDs; country-code TLD rules can differ.
Auth-Code for applicable gTLD transfers
ICANN’s About Auth-Code guidance says an Auth-Code is required for a domain holder to transfer a domain between registrars in the applicable context. A registrar may let the holder generate it in a control panel; if the holder cannot do so, the registrar must provide it within five calendar days after the request. Confirm the current registrar’s process and make sure the authorized holder can access the required account or contact channel.

Use separate tracked tasks even when one team performs them. Their dependencies differ: transfer eligibility and authorization govern registrar changes; delegation updates govern which nameservers are authoritative; record changes govern what those nameservers publish. For each task, document the object changed, control owner, authorization, data scope, timing dependency, and provider-specific interface.
