Why Switch 2 is the best overall Zelda choice
It combines the existing Zelda catalog with newer editions
Nintendo’s current support guidance says Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released for Nintendo Switch. That matters because the major modern Zelda releases were originally made for Switch, while Switch 2 is also the platform Nintendo uses for enhanced editions.
Nintendo identifies The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. These are the relevant versions if you want the newest platform-specific treatment rather than only the original Switch releases.

ZELDA NOTES is a Switch 2-only app feature
Nintendo says some Nintendo Switch app features are exclusive to Switch 2, including ZELDA NOTES for the Switch 2 Editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. If that feature is part of your reason for buying, Switch 2 is the only model in this comparison that qualifies.
Do Zelda games run better on Switch 2?
Some Switch games receive free updates or paid upgrades that improve performance on Switch 2, according to Nintendo. The important qualification is “compatible”: Nintendo does not state that every Switch game receives an upgrade, nor that every title gets the same improvements.
For Zelda, look at the product listing for the exact game and edition you plan to use. A standard Switch game may remain the original version, while a Switch 2 Edition may add platform-specific improvements. Do not buy on the assumption that all visual, loading or frame-rate behavior changes automatically.

Who should buy Switch 2?
- A first-time buyer who wants current Nintendo hardware and access to Zelda’s existing Switch catalog.
- Someone deciding between the original versions and the Switch 2 Editions of Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom.
- A player who wants access to ZELDA NOTES for those Switch 2 Editions.
- A household that wants to avoid replacing its console when future Nintendo software requires Switch 2.
Why the OLED Model remains the best original Switch for Zelda
The screen is its defining advantage

OLED technology gives handheld scenes stronger contrast, so dark caves, night skies and bright effects can be easier to distinguish than on a conventional LCD. The larger screen also makes the map, inventory and environmental details more comfortable to inspect during handheld sessions.

The available data does not establish a higher Zelda frame rate or resolution for the OLED Model. Treat the OLED purchase as a screen and flexibility decision, not as a performance upgrade.
It supports every major play arrangement
Nintendo says the OLED Model supports TV mode, tabletop mode and handheld mode, along with controllers compatible with Nintendo Switch systems. Nintendo also describes it as compatible with the full Nintendo Switch game library.
That makes OLED a strong fit if you alternate between a television at home, handheld play while travelling and tabletop sessions with another player. It also avoids the Lite’s central limitation: no TV Mode.
Should you buy OLED instead of Switch 2 for Breath of the Wild?
Buy OLED when your priority is the original Switch experience on a better built-in display and you already know you do not need Switch 2 Editions or ZELDA NOTES. Choose Switch 2 when you want the newer Zelda editions, the broadest forward-looking compatibility or the possibility of Nintendo-supported upgrades.

OLED is not a substitute for Switch 2 features. Its advantage is that it gives the original Switch catalog a more satisfying handheld presentation while retaining every standard play mode.
When Switch Lite makes sense—and when it does not
What Lite can do
Nintendo says Switch Lite plays Nintendo Switch games that support handheld mode. That makes it suitable for a player who intends to hold the console for every session and does not need a television display.
For Tears of the Kingdom, use the Nintendo Switch release and confirm that the listing supports handheld mode. Nintendo’s compatibility rule is the deciding test for any Switch game purchased for Lite.

Nintendo’s Play Mode Options guidance states: “Important: Nintendo Switch Lite does not support TV Mode.” A Lite purchase therefore cannot be converted into a normal docked Zelda system later.

It is also a poor choice for someone who expects to use tabletop multiplayer or swap between the console’s built-in controls and detachable Joy-Con. If those uses matter, choose OLED or Switch 2 instead.
Who should choose Lite?
- A player whose Zelda sessions are exclusively handheld.
- Someone who values the smaller, simpler handheld format over a large OLED display.
- A buyer who has a separate TV console and wants a dedicated portable Nintendo system.

Cost: compare the complete setup, not only the console
Retail prices and stock vary by country, retailer and date. Before buying, add the console, the Zelda game or edition you want, required storage or download needs shown on the listing, and any accessories needed for your play style.
OLED special editions are cosmetic choices
Nintendo announced a Tears of the Kingdom-themed OLED Model released on April 29, 2023, with a 38,980-yen MSRP including tax in Japan at launch. Nintendo’s announcement says the game was not included. Treat that edition as a design and collectible decision: it does not turn the OLED hardware into a Switch 2, and purchasing it still requires the game separately.

- For TV play, budget for the appropriate dock, power and display setup supplied or required by the model you select.
- For tabletop multiplayer, budget for any additional compatible controllers the game requires.
- For digital purchases, check the console’s available storage and the game listing before checkout.
- For a Lite, do not budget for a future TV dock as a solution; Nintendo says the system does not support TV Mode.

“I am buying my first Switch mainly for Zelda.”
Choose Switch 2. It gives you access to compatible Switch software while also supporting the Zelda Switch 2 Editions and their platform-specific features.

“I want the best handheld screen for the original games.”
Choose the OLED Model. Its 7.0-inch OLED touch screen is the clearest documented display advantage in this comparison, and you retain TV and tabletop modes.
“I only play handheld and need the simplest, least expensive route.”
Choose Lite, but verify handheld-mode support for every game before buying. Accept that TV Mode is unavailable permanently on that hardware.
“I already own an OLED Model. Should I upgrade for Zelda?”
Upgrade to Switch 2 if you want the Switch 2 Editions of Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom, ZELDA NOTES, or Nintendo-supported enhancements available only through compatible Switch 2 software. Stay with OLED if you are satisfied with the original Switch versions and value its screen and established play modes more than those additions.

“Is the Zelda OLED edition worth it?”
It is worth considering for the themed hardware and the OLED screen, not for new Zelda performance. Nintendo’s launch announcement says the game was not included, and the edition does not add Switch 2 capabilities.
Buying and setup checklist
- Choose the software first. Decide whether you want the original Switch release or a listed Switch 2 Edition of Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom.
- Check compatibility for the exact purchase. For Switch 2, confirm that a physical cartridge or digital title is listed as compatible. For Lite, confirm handheld-mode support.
- Choose your play modes. If television or tabletop play is essential, remove Lite from your shortlist.
- Choose the display priority. Select OLED when handheld contrast and a 7.0-inch screen matter more than Switch 2-specific Zelda features.
- Price the complete setup. Add the game, controllers and any other accessories required for the way you intend to play.
- After setup, install the correct software version. On Switch 2, follow Nintendo’s instructions for any free update or paid upgrade offered for your title; do not assume an upgrade exists without a listing for that game.
Bottom line
Switch 2 is the best Nintendo system to buy new for Zelda in 2026 because it combines compatible Switch software with dedicated Switch 2 Editions of Nintendo’s two major modern Zelda adventures and access to ZELDA NOTES. OLED is the better choice for the original Switch library when handheld screen quality and all three play modes matter most. Lite is a sensible specialist purchase only for handheld-first players who accept that Nintendo does not support TV Mode on it.
