Use Wi-Fi Only when cellular data must not be used, Save Data when you still need to watch over a mobile connection, and lower each profile’s browser Playback setting to Low or Medium when you need a predictable data ceiling. These controls can reduce carrier usage and help avoid overage charges, but they do not lower the price of your Netflix subscription.
What each Netflix data setting actually controls
Netflix exposes two related controls. The mobile app has a Cellular Data Usage menu that governs streaming over a phone’s cellular connection. A browser-based Playback settings menu applies a data-usage preference to an individual profile. Downloads have a separate Wi-Fi-only switch.

Netflix’s published figures are usage guidance, not guarantees. Actual consumption varies with the title, device, codec, connection conditions and carrier handling. Treat the numbers as planning estimates rather than a promise that every hour will use exactly the same amount.
Mobile streaming modes
| Mobile mode | Netflix’s published guidance | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic | About four hours per GB | Balancing quality and data without manually choosing a ceiling | Usage and picture quality can change as conditions change |
| Wi-Fi Only | Cellular streaming is blocked | Metered plans or phones that must never stream Netflix over cellular | You must connect to Wi-Fi before streaming |
| Save Data | About six hours per GB | Watching occasionally over cellular while stretching a limited allowance | Lower picture quality than high-data modes |
| Maximum Data | At least 1 GB every 20 minutes | Unlimited plans or situations where very high usage is acceptable | Can consume a large allowance quickly |
The hours-per-GB figures are Netflix estimates. “Maximum Data” is expressed as a minimum rate of consumption, so it can use more than 1 GB in 20 minutes.

- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Profile-level Playback settings
| Playback level | Netflix’s guidance | Picture-quality implication |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Up to 0.3 GB per hour | Lowest data use; quality is reduced |
| Medium | Up to 0.7 GB per hour | Moderate data use; supports 720p HD according to Netflix’s quality guidance |
| High | Up to 1 GB per hour in SD, 3 GB per hour in HD, or 7 GB per hour in 4K | Highest quality available to the plan and device |
| Auto | Adapts to connection conditions and the service’s quality rules | Netflix chooses a balance between quality and uninterrupted playback |
Netflix maps 4K and 1080p HD to High or Auto. Its guidance lists 720p HD as available with Medium, High or Auto. A High selection cannot create 4K if your subscription, title, device, cable or port does not support it.
How to make Netflix Wi-Fi-only on a phone
This is the strongest control when a carrier allowance is non-negotiable: Netflix will allow mobile streaming only while the device is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Open the Netflix app and tap My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name at the top of the screen.
- Open App Settings.
- Choose Cellular Data Usage.
- Select Wi-Fi Only.
With this mode selected, starting a video while the phone is on cellular data should be prevented rather than silently consuming the allowance. You can still watch normally after joining a Wi-Fi network. If your app presents slightly different wording, look for the cellular-data control inside App Settings; labels can change between app versions and operating systems.

Save Data is the practical compromise for a limited plan: it keeps cellular playback available while Netflix’s guidance estimates roughly six hours of viewing per GB. That estimate is not a guaranteed runtime for every title or phone.
- In the Netflix app, open My Netflix.
- Tap your profile name.
- Tap App Settings.
- Open Cellular Data Usage.
- Select Save Data.
Expect a softer image than you would see under High or Maximum Data, particularly on a large screen. Save Data is intended to limit consumption, not to guarantee a particular resolution. If your allowance is extremely small, Wi-Fi Only remains safer because Save Data still permits cellular traffic.

When Automatic or Maximum Data makes sense
Automatic
Automatic lets Netflix balance data use and video quality, with Netflix’s current guidance of about four hours per GB on mobile. It is useful when you want a hands-off setting and your allowance can absorb changes. Because it adapts, it is less predictable than a fixed Low or Medium profile setting: a strong connection may lead to higher quality and higher consumption, while a weak connection may reduce quality.
Maximum Data
Maximum Data prioritizes the highest available quality. Netflix says it can use 1 GB per 20 minutes or more and recommends it only for unlimited plans. On a metered plan, one episode or a short video session can consume a substantial portion of the allowance. Select it only when high quality is more important than conserving data and you have verified that the carrier plan can tolerate the usage.
How to set a predictable ceiling from a browser
The browser control is useful when you want a profile-specific rule that applies beyond one phone. Each Netflix profile can have its own data-usage level.
- Sign in to Netflix in a web browser.
- Open Account.
- Select Profiles.
- Choose the profile you want to change.
- Open Playback settings.
- Select Low, Medium, High or Auto, then save the change if Netflix presents a confirmation control.
Choose Low when the smallest possible data rate matters. Choose Medium when you need a tighter ceiling but still want a reasonable HD image. High or Auto is appropriate when picture quality is the priority and the connection and allowance can support it. Netflix warns that restricting data can reduce video quality.
Because the setting belongs to a profile, changing one profile does not necessarily change the preferences of other household members. Set each profile deliberately if several people watch on different devices or have different allowances.

How to stop downloads from using cellular data
Streaming is not the only way Netflix can consume a mobile allowance. Downloads can also transfer large files if the app is allowed to use cellular data. Netflix provides a separate Wi-Fi-only control for downloads.

- Find the Downloads section.
- Turn Wi-Fi Only on.
Download movies or episodes while connected to Wi-Fi, then play the downloaded copy later without streaming that viewing session over cellular data. Downloads remain subject to Netflix’s availability rules, expiration limits and device restrictions, so not every title can necessarily be stored for offline playback.
Which setting is best for your plan?
| Your situation | Recommended setting | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Any cellular streaming could trigger an overage | Cellular Data Usage: Wi-Fi Only; Downloads: Wi-Fi Only | Prevents mobile streaming and mobile downloads |
| You need occasional viewing on a small allowance | Cellular Data Usage: Save Data | Netflix estimates about six hours per GB, while retaining cellular playback |
| You want a browser-level limit for a profile | Playback settings: Low or Medium | Fixed levels provide a clearer ceiling than adaptive quality |
| You want Netflix to adapt to changing network conditions | Automatic or Playback: Auto | Netflix can lower quality to keep playback moving |
| You have unlimited data and want maximum quality | Maximum Data, or Playback: High/Auto | Prioritizes available quality over consumption |
These controls address different layers. Cellular Data Usage governs the app’s behavior on a mobile network; Playback settings govern a profile’s data preference; Downloads Wi-Fi Only prevents the transfer of offline files over cellular. Using all three appropriately gives you more control than changing only one.
How the settings affect picture quality and buffering
Higher quality requires more data. Low and Medium reduce consumption by limiting the stream’s data rate, while High and Maximum Data prioritize detail when the plan and hardware permit it. The delivered resolution still depends on the subscription plan, title, device, connection and supported cables or ports.
A fixed level can make usage more predictable and may produce a steadier result on a connection with a known capacity. However, a fixed high setting can demand more bandwidth than an unstable mobile connection can sustain. That can cause buffering or freezing.

If playback repeatedly buffers or freezes after you choose a fixed setting, Netflix advises switching back to Auto. Auto can reduce quality when the connection weakens so the video continues instead of waiting for data. The visual result may change during a session, but uninterrupted playback can be preferable to a sharper stream that repeatedly stops.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can these settings lower your Netflix bill?
No. Changing data usage does not change the Netflix subscription charge. The possible saving is on the mobile-service side: consuming fewer gigabytes can help you remain below a carrier’s cap and avoid an overage fee.
Netflix product director Eddy Wu described the purpose of its cellular optimization this way: “Our testing found that, on cellular networks, this setting balances good video quality with lower data usage to help avoid exceeding data caps and incurring overage fees.” That statement explains the intended benefit, but Netflix does not publish a guaranteed monthly monetary saving because carrier prices, allowances and overage rules differ.
For a metered plan, begin with Wi-Fi Only and enable Wi-Fi Only for downloads. If you genuinely need cellular viewing, use Save Data, then check the carrier’s own usage meter after a few sessions. Carrier meters may count usage differently from Netflix’s estimates, and background activity from other apps can also consume the allowance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA practical setup and monitoring routine
- Protect the allowance first. Set Cellular Data Usage to Wi-Fi Only if an overage would be unacceptable.
- Protect downloads. In App Settings, enable Downloads Wi-Fi Only.
- Choose a profile ceiling. In a browser, set Low or Medium for profiles used on limited-data devices.
- Test one typical session. Watch under the chosen mode and compare the carrier meter before and after. Netflix’s hourly figures are estimates, so your own plan’s meter is the relevant check.
- Adjust for quality or reliability. If the image is too soft, move from Low to Medium or from Save Data to Automatic only if the allowance permits. If playback stalls under a fixed high setting, return that profile to Auto.
- Review after plan changes. An unlimited plan may justify Maximum Data, while a reduced allowance calls for Wi-Fi Only or Save Data.
Common mistakes and fixes
Assuming Save Data means no cellular use
Save Data still allows streaming over the mobile network. Use Wi-Fi Only when the requirement is zero cellular streaming.

Changing Playback settings but forgetting downloads
Playback settings do not replace the Downloads Wi-Fi Only control. Enable that switch separately to keep offline transfers on Wi-Fi.
Expecting High to force 4K
High is a preference for the highest quality available, not an upgrade to your plan or device. The subscription, title, hardware and connection must all support the target resolution.
Choosing Maximum Data on a limited plan
At Netflix’s published rate of 1 GB per 20 minutes or more, Maximum Data can exhaust a small allowance rapidly. Reserve it for unlimited service or a deliberate high-usage session.
Blaming the data setting for every pause
High fixed settings can expose a weak or unstable connection. Switch to Auto when buffering or freezing occurs; Netflix can then adapt quality to the available speed.
What to remember
Use Wi-Fi Only to eliminate mobile streaming, Save Data to stretch a necessary cellular session, and Low or Medium Playback settings to impose a clearer profile-level limit. Automatic favors adaptation, while Maximum Data favors picture quality at a very high data rate. None of these options changes the Netflix subscription price, and every published usage figure remains an estimate that should be checked against your carrier’s meter.
