For a practical productivity setup, start in Logitech Options+ by customizing the Actions Ring with a few frequently used tools or shortcuts. Then map repeated actions to buttons or gestures, automate only stable multi-step routines with Smart Actions, and tune pointer, scrolling, and haptic feedback to your work and preferences. There is no universally best layout: the useful settings are the ones that make your recurring tasks easier to reach.
Start with the Actions Ring
The Actions Ring is a customizable on-screen overlay that brings assigned tools, shortcuts, and actions near the cursor. Configure it in Logi Options+. It is most useful for actions you reach for often, rather than commands you use only occasionally.

- Open Logi Options+ and select the MX Master 4.
- Open the Actions Ring settings and assign a small initial set of frequently used tools or shortcuts.
- Use the ring during a normal work session. Keep actions you reach for and remove ones you forget or find awkward to select.
Keeping the ring focused is a practical starting point, not a Logitech-tested optimum. Logitech says the overlay can reduce menu searching and pointer travel, but the value of a particular assignment depends on your workflow.

Map repeated actions to buttons and gestures
Use button customization for commands you repeat throughout the day. Gestures can suit directional or navigation actions: hold the assigned button and move the mouse in the direction associated with the command. Logitech’s MX Master 4 getting-started guide says up to five different actions can be assigned to the Gesture button, and gestures can also be mapped to other buttons.

- Precision you can feel with the Haptic Sense Panel; customizable (1) haptic feedback on specific actions, shortcuts, notifications enhancing productivity on this wireless Bluetooth mouse
- Effortlessly access favorite tools with Actions Ring (2) on this MX Series mouse—a dynamic, customizable overlay adapts to each app, placing most used filters, adjustments, and shortcuts at your cursor
- Scroll 1,000 lines per second and stop on a pixel with the MagSpeed scroll wheel—Logitech’s fastest (3), quietest, and most precise (4) scrolling experience
- Enjoy 2X more powerful connectivity (7) with a USB-C dongle, advanced radio chip, and optimized antenna for faster, stronger, reliable performance—or use Bluetooth for more versatility
- Ergonomic mouse designed for comfort, MX Master 4 keeps you in flow with a natural tilt, intuitive buttons, and a thumb scroll wheel that reduces hand stress for fluid navigation
Choose mappings that fit your own muscle memory and comfort. A command that is easy to trigger but hard to remember is unlikely to help; test a mapping in the apps where you actually use it before building a large set of shortcuts.
Use Smart Actions for stable routines
Smart Actions can trigger multiple tasks with a click or keystroke. They are a reasonable fit for sequences you perform repeatedly and in the same way, such as opening a consistent group of work apps or running a routine series of steps. Logitech documents the capability, not a guaranteed time saving for every user.

If a sequence changes frequently, maintaining its automation may be more trouble than running the steps yourself. Keep the action simple enough that you can tell what it will do before you trigger it.

Options+ provides controls for pointer speed, scrolling speed, scrolling direction, and other pointing and scrolling behavior. Logitech does not establish a single best speed or direction. Adjust one setting at a time, then use the mouse through a normal work session before deciding whether it gives you better control.

Set haptic feedback to a useful cue level
The MX Master 4’s haptic intensity options are Subtle, Low, Medium, and High, according to Logitech’s Haptic Feedback Guide. Starting low and increasing the strength only if cues are hard to notice is a preference-based approach, not a tested best setting.
Haptics can provide feedback for Actions Ring navigation and selection, Smart Action steps, and supported gestures. Logitech lists haptic support for Hold + Move Left, Right, Up, and Down; Gesture Click does not support haptics. See Logitech’s haptics overview for the distinction between mouse features and native operating-system feedback.

Check software, operating-system, and firmware support
Advanced configuration—including Actions Ring, button and gesture customization, Smart Actions, and haptic settings—uses Logi Options+. Logitech’s download page lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 14 or later; check the current requirements on that page because software support can change.

Native Windows haptics are separate from haptic features configured in Options+. Logitech says native feedback for actions such as window snapping or resizing requires a Windows 11 update from the end of March 2026 onward. If native haptics do not appear automatically, Logitech says to check for a mouse firmware update in Options+ device settings.

How to interpret Logitech’s productivity figures
Logitech’s MX Master 4 product page reports “up to 33%” time saved and “up to 63%” fewer mouse movements. Logitech attributes both figures to an Ergo Lab study in 2025 involving 37 MX Master mouse users and eight desktop actions, and says, “Results may vary depending on assigned shortcuts.” These are Logitech-published study claims, not an independently verified outcome or a guarantee for an individual workflow. The product page does not establish that every user, shortcut assignment, or task will achieve those results: Logitech MX Master 4.
Quick Recap
A simple order for setting up your mouse
- Install or open Options+ and select the MX Master 4.
- Assign a few frequent actions to the Actions Ring.
- Map other repeated commands to buttons or gestures that feel natural.
- Create Smart Actions only for multi-step sequences that stay consistent.
