Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn OpenLogi, select your MX Master 4, open Buttons, choose a control in the diagram, and assign an action. Gesture maps are configured on eligible controls, while scroll options are split between app-wide settings and per-device wheel settings. Quit Logitech Options+ before launching OpenLogi; the two applications compete for access to the mouse. If a feature is missing, check the connected unit with openlogi diag features because the device’s reported capabilities determine which controls OpenLogi can configure.
Before you customize the mouse
OpenLogi supports the MX Master 4 and lists macOS, Linux, and Windows compatibility. It can communicate with supported Logitech HID++ peripherals over Logi Bolt, Unifying, or Lightspeed receivers, Bluetooth, or USB. OpenLogi’s documentation identifies v0.8.11 as its published baseline, was updated October 3, 2026, and warns that the software is under active development and not yet stable: OpenLogi documentation.

- Quit Logitech Options+ before starting OpenLogi. OpenLogi says only one application can own a receiver at a time. On Linux, close Solaar as well.
- On macOS, grant Accessibility permission for OS-level remapping. On Linux, install the package’s udev rules.
- Keep in mind that an individual mouse’s reported feature table—not the model name alone—determines which settings are available.
Remap buttons and set app-specific actions
- Select the MX Master 4 in OpenLogi’s device gallery and open the Buttons tab.
- Select a button hotspot or its label card in the interactive diagram.
- Choose an action from the searchable action picker. Documented examples include copy and paste, Mission Control, media controls, mouse Back and Forward, and cycling DPI presets.
- To customize a control for one application, use the profile selector to choose that application, then change its button assignment. An app profile can be sparse: controls without an app-specific override inherit the default profile.
- Save the settings, or inspect the generated per-device TOML configuration if you want to review or edit it directly.
OpenLogi leaves left and right click as pass-through controls; other supported controls can be remapped and scoped per app. The GUI handles action selection, but parameterized actions such as custom shortcuts and scripts may require direct configuration-file edits.

MiddleClick = "MissionControl"
DpiToggle = { SetDpiPreset = 2 }
HapticPanel = "ShowActionsRing"
Back = { CustomShortcut = "Cmd+Shift+P" }
unit:6be9d300 is an illustrative device key, not a universal identifier. Configure your mouse in the app and use the physical-device key it generates. OpenLogi’s device guide lists controls including Middle click, Mode-shift (DPI), Thumb wheel, Gesture button, Forward, Back, and the Haptic Sense panel; availability depends on the features reported by your connected unit: MX Master 4 device guide.
Configure gestures on supported controls
OpenLogi supports independent gesture maps on Back, Forward, the dedicated Gesture Button, and the Haptic Sense panel. Mode-shift/DPI can also support gestures when the device reports raw-XY support. The thumb wheel does not support gesture mode. OpenLogi no longer offers new middle-click gesture maps, although an older saved map can remain editable until disabled.
Each map has five action arms: Up, Down, Left, Right, and Click. To invoke a directional action, hold the control and move the mouse; a quick tap triggers Click on release. OpenLogi documents a recognition threshold of more than 160 ms held and at least 50 raw-XY units on the dominant axis. These are implementation details that may change between releases, not settings to treat as universal hardware specifications.

An example map looks like this:
[devices."unit:6be9d300".bindings.GestureButton]
Up = "MissionControl"
Down = "ShowDesktop"
Left = "PrevTab"
Right = "NextTab"
Click = "AppExpose"
The key is illustrative, and action names must match the currently supported action list. Logitech Options+ has a separate gesture system: Logitech describes assigning up to five actions to its Gesture button and says gestures can also be mapped to other MX Master 4 controls, including middle and manual shift buttons. Those are Options+ controls and eligibility rules, not a description of OpenLogi’s editor: Logitech MX Master 4 support.
Choose the right scroll settings
OpenLogi separates host-side scroll processing from options written to the mouse. The main wheel, SmartShift ratchet/free-spin behavior, and thumb wheel are distinct controls, so first decide which one you want to change.
Main wheel: smoothness, sensitivity, inversion, and resolution
App-wide settings include smooth scrolling, which is off by default, and vertical scroll sensitivity on a 1–100 scale. OpenLogi documents 14 as 1× sensitivity. Continuous pixel input from a native trackpad is neither smoothed nor scaled by these options. Separately, per-device main-wheel options include scroll inversion and wheel resolution: device default, standard, or high resolution. These per-device settings do not replace smooth scrolling or vertical sensitivity.

Main wheel: ratchet and free-spin with SmartShift
SmartShift controls the main wheel’s transition between ratchet and free-spin scrolling. OpenLogi’s MX Master 4 guide identifies SmartShift Enhanced and provides example configuration fields for mode and auto-disengage. Logitech says Options+ can disable SmartShift for manual mode switching, adjust the sensitivity threshold for automatic free-spin, and adjust scrolling force. The two applications expose their own settings; do not assume an Options+ control label or behavior maps exactly to an OpenLogi setting.
Thumb wheel: horizontal scrolling and sensitivity
The thumb wheel is a separate horizontal control. OpenLogi binds its rotation directions with ThumbwheelScrollUp and ThumbwheelScrollDown, and supports thumb-wheel sensitivity at the app-wide or per-device level. Its native convention is physical up/forward for scrolling left and physical down/backward for scrolling right.
The Thumbwheel tap is a capacitive contact report, not a mechanical click. OpenLogi leaves it unbound by default because incidental thumb contact while rotating can register taps. Logitech Options+ separately offers thumb-wheel speed and direction controls and app-specific uses such as horizontal scrolling, zoom, brush size, timeline navigation, browser-tab switching, volume, or custom keystrokes.

This configuration illustrates how app-wide and per-device values can coexist:
[app_settings]
smooth_scroll = true
vertical_scroll_sensitivity = 20
thumbwheel_sensitivity = 14
[devices."unit:6be9d300"]
invert_scroll = true
scroll_resolution = "high"
thumbwheel_sensitivity = 30
[devices."unit:6be9d300".bindings]
ThumbwheelScrollUp = "HorizontalScrollLeft"
ThumbwheelScrollDown = "HorizontalScrollRight"
The values are examples of configuration syntax, not recommended settings for every user. OpenLogi’s scroll guide documents the available host and wheel options: OpenLogi scrolling guide.
Use the Haptic Sense panel for the Actions Ring
OpenLogi can bind the MX Master 4’s Haptic Sense panel to ShowActionsRing. The Actions Ring is an eight-position radial launcher; its layout can vary by foreground application. OpenLogi documents default actions such as Cut, Copy, Paste, Browser Forward and Back, Play/Pause, Undo, and Redo. The Haptic Sense panel is the default trigger on the MX Master 4, but another rebindable control can be assigned to open the ring. Haptic feedback is available when the connected mouse reports the required feature: OpenLogi Actions Ring guide.

Troubleshoot missing controls or settings
Check the device’s reported features
Run openlogi diag features and inspect the connected unit’s report. A missing panel or gesture option can mean the unit did not report the feature OpenLogi needs; do not assume every MX Master 4 exposes every feature in the same way.
Check device access and connection
Close Logitech Options+ (and Solaar on Linux), then confirm that OpenLogi sees the mouse over its receiver, Bluetooth, or USB connection. If the device is detected but OS-level remapping does not work, check macOS Accessibility permission or Linux udev rules, as applicable. OpenLogi’s feature guide associates controls with HID++ features such as reprogrammable controls (0x1b04), thumb wheel (0x2150), SmartShift Enhanced (0x2111), and HiResWheel (0x2121): MX Master 4 device guide.
Check the configuration key and action names
If a TOML edit has no effect, confirm that it uses the generated physical-device key rather than the illustrative key in documentation, and that each action name is supported by your current OpenLogi build. The project is actively developed, so its published documentation and interface may change.
