You may be able to pay at selected overseas merchants with UPI, but it does not work everywhere abroad. You need an eligible Indian bank account, a UPI app that supports UPI Global/International for that account, and a merchant that accepts a participating UPI or network QR. Confirm support and your bank’s limits before you travel; the domestic UPI transaction ceiling is not proof of the international limit.
Can you use UPI outside India?
For an Indian resident traveling abroad, UPI Global Acceptance enables QR payments at selected international merchant locations. It is not universal acceptance across a country: availability depends on the merchant and payment network, your bank account and app, and the destination. A Government of India factsheet dated 24 August 2026 says UPI is live in 11 foreign countries for “UPI Acceptance and/or Cross Border Remittances.” Because the figure combines merchant acceptance with remittances, it should not be read as 11 countries where every traveler can pay merchants by QR. The actual footprint of participating merchants is narrower and should be checked for your destination.

How to set up and pay with UPI abroad
- Check eligibility before departure. Open the UPI app linked to the Indian bank account you plan to use. Confirm that the app and bank support UPI Global/International for that account, and that the service is available for your destination. NPCI’s country, bank, and app information can change, so verify with your bank or app as well.
- Activate the international feature. In the supported app, enable UPI Global/International for the specific bank account. The exact menu name and activation steps vary by app. NPCI’s guidance is to activate the service for the specified account through a UPI-powered application.
- Check that the merchant accepts it. Look for a BHIM UPI or participating network-partner QR mark and ask the merchant whether UPI is accepted. A generic QR code alone does not establish that the merchant participates in UPI Global Acceptance.
- Scan and review the quote. Scan the accepted QR with your enabled app. Before authorizing, check the amount in the merchant’s currency and in Indian rupees, along with any displayed exchange rate or fee.
- Authorize with your UPI PIN. Enter the PIN only in the payment authorization flow. Do not tell it to a merchant or support agent; NPCI warns users not to share their UPI PIN.
Keep another payment method available for merchants that do not participate, connectivity problems, app or bank outages, and failed transactions.

Which countries accept UPI?
There is no reliable country-level answer that means UPI works at all merchants in a destination. NPCI describes acceptance at “select international merchant locations” and directs users to current country, bank, and app information. Check that information and confirm with your bank before relying on UPI for a trip.
Do not confuse merchant acceptance with the countries where an NRI can use an international phone number to link an eligible account. NPCI’s NRI directory lists numbers from Australia (+61), Canada (+1), France (+33), Hong Kong (+852), Malaysia (+60), Oman (+968), Qatar (+974), Saudi Arabia (+966), Singapore (+65), the UAE (+971), the UK (+44), and the US (+1). It also lists participating banks and apps. These are onboarding details for NRIs, not a list of destinations where outbound travelers can pay merchants. Check the NPCI guidance for NRIs and its live members directory for current eligibility.

What is the UPI limit when traveling abroad?
The reviewed NPCI information does not establish a universal cap for outbound UPI Global Acceptance payments. Ask your bank or app for the per-transaction and daily limits that apply to your account and destination, then check the in-app quote before each payment.

NPCI’s FAQ gives a general domestic UPI ceiling of ₹1 lakh per transaction, with higher limits for certain categories. That domestic figure does not establish the limit for an international merchant payment. The applicable cap may depend on bank or app terms and destination or category rules; NRI transactions are also subject to bank terms.

Exchange rates and fees: check before confirming
Review the final INR amount, foreign-currency amount, exchange rate, and any fee shown in the app before authorizing. The amount you pay depends on the quote and terms presented for that transaction. The available official information does not establish a universal exchange rate or fee, or support a general claim that UPI is cheaper than cards or cash.

- Outbound traveler: An Indian resident pays a participating overseas merchant from an eligible Indian bank account using UPI Global Acceptance.
- NRI using an international number: An eligible NRE/NRO account may be linked to a supported international mobile number in a participating app, subject to bank terms. This is account onboarding, not proof of merchant acceptance where the person travels.
- International visitor in India: UPI One World is a wallet service for visitors paying participating merchants in India. In NPCI’s February 2026 AI Impact Summit pilot, invited delegates could onboard through CheqUPI with passport and visa details and a selfie, then load funds from an international card. The announced pilot terms allowed up to ₹25,000 per load, no more than two loads per month, and ₹50,000 in total monthly loads. These were terms for that event pilot, not outbound travel limits or a universal UPI One World allowance. See NPCI’s February 2026 announcement.
