Identify the Xbox 360 motherboard before buying anything. A practical voltage-glitch (RGH) bench usually needs a fine-tip, temperature-controlled soldering iron, electronics solder, flux, isopropyl alcohol, cotton swabs, 28 AWG or 30 AWG solid-core hookup wire, a compatible glitch chip or RGH3 component set, a NAND/glitch programmer, a Windows PC and motherboard-specific timing files. A Raspberry Pi Pico is the clearest currently documented microcontroller option: in a 2026 workflow reported by Tom’s Hardware, it dumps the NAND through PicoFlasher and uploads Octal450 timing files to a Matrix Coolrunner glitch chip. It is a programmer/helper in that setup, not a universal replacement for a glitch chip.
Start with the motherboard, not the shopping list
Xbox 360 RGH work is not one universal installation. Xenon, Zephyr, Falcon/Opus, Jasper, Trinity, Corona and Winchester boards have different compatible methods, wiring diagrams, pad layouts and timing-file requirements. Some installations use a separate glitch chip; RGH3 uses the console’s southbridge SMC instead of an external glitch chip. Later Corona boards can also require a postfix adapter because a POST trace is absent.

Read the motherboard identification guide for your exact console revision, then select the method and parts that guide supports. Do not solder by a generic photograph or by the retail name alone. A wrong diagram can put a wire on the wrong pad, select incompatible timing data or damage a trace before any software step begins.

Motherboard revisions you may encounter
| Revision family | Why it matters for parts | What must be checked before work |
|---|---|---|
| Xenon | Compatibility and available RGH paths differ from later boards. | Whether the chosen method and timing files support the board. |
| Zephyr | Uses its own wiring and compatibility conditions. | Exact diagram and supported glitch hardware. |
| Falcon/Opus | Has a different installation path from Xenon, Zephyr and Jasper. | Board identity, wiring points and timing-file family. |
| Jasper | Method selection and wire routing are revision-specific. | Supported RGH version and programmer connection. |
| Trinity | Often treated separately from Corona and older boards. | Exact timing files and pad locations. |
| Corona | Some later Corona boards lack an accessible POST trace. | Whether a postfix adapter is required and where it fits in the diagram. |
| Winchester | Not every RGH path listed for older boards applies. | Whether the selected method supports this revision at all. |
The safest buying sequence is therefore: identify the board, choose the documented RGH path, then buy the programmer, glitch hardware, wire and timing files named for that path.

Microcontroller and programming hardware
Raspberry Pi Pico: the documented current option
A Raspberry Pi Pico is a small, inexpensive microcontroller board that can serve as the interface for a PicoFlasher workflow. Tom’s Hardware reported a modder connecting a Pico to the Xbox 360 NAND interface to dump NAND firmware, then using the Pico to upload Octal450 timing files to a Matrix Coolrunner glitch chip. The report put the Pico at about $4 in 2026; that is an approximate reported price, not a guaranteed current retail price.
The Pico’s role is important to understand. It can provide NAND-reading and timing-file programming functions in a supported setup, but it does not establish that every motherboard can be modified with a Pico alone. You still need a compatible glitch device for traditional RGH installations, the correct wiring and files, and a method that supports your board.
NAND/glitch-chip programmer
RGH equipment lists include a programmer. The exact device depends on the glitch chip and motherboard; xFlasher 360 is one example named in RGH guides, while other compatible programmers may be appropriate for different hardware. A programmer is used to read or write the NAND and, where supported, configure the glitch hardware. Confirm connector type, voltage requirements and software support before purchase rather than assuming that one programmer covers every chip.

Traditional RGH variants use a compatible external chip, such as devices in the CoolRunner, Matrix or X360ACE families. The chip generates the precisely timed glitch needed by the selected method. RGH3 changes that arrangement: it uses the Xbox 360 southbridge SMC instead of an external glitch chip, so the shopping list and soldering points change. Buy the complete component set specified for the motherboard and RGH version, not a chip advertised only by family name.

Timing files
Timing files are not interchangeable decoration. They are specific to the motherboard and method, and the installation guide must identify the correct file family. In the PicoFlasher example, Octal450 timing files are uploaded to a Matrix Coolrunner. Keep the file with the board and method notes, and do not substitute a file simply because its name appears in a different tutorial.
Wire: the correct gauge and construction
For RGH signal wiring, the practical buying specification is 28 AWG or 30 AWG solid-core hookup wire. ConsoleMods lists those gauges and prefers solid core. This is fine signal wire for short runs on a dense motherboard, not generic power cable or thick stranded automotive wire.
- 28 AWG: a little more mechanically robust while still fitting typical signal-routing work.
- 30 AWG: thinner and useful where space is especially tight, but easier to kink or break during rework.
- Solid core: holds a formed route and is easier to place on small pads than loose, flexible strands.
Keep each run short and follow the exact diagram for the board. Route wires away from sharp edges, fans and screw posts, and leave enough slack to avoid lifting a pad when the board is reassembled. Do not infer a wire length, destination or color code from another motherboard’s diagram.

Soldering iron, consumables and bench aids
Core soldering equipment
- Fine-tip, temperature-controlled soldering iron: choose a stable iron with a tip small enough for the console’s pads. Temperature control helps avoid prolonged heating and accidental trace damage.
- Electronics solder: use solder intended for circuit-board work, in a diameter that lets you meter tiny amounts onto small pads.
- Flux: improves wetting on clean pads and reduces the temptation to apply excessive heat.
- Isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs: remove flux residue and surface contamination after soldering.
The guides specifically establish those four categories. Fine tweezers, magnification and strong lighting are sensible supporting tools because the work involves short wires and small pads, but the exact brand and magnification are a bench preference rather than a fixed requirement.
Useful supporting items
- Fine tweezers for positioning and holding wire.
- Magnification or a microscope for checking bridges, lifted pads and wire strands.
- Bright, shadow-free task lighting.
- A board holder that keeps the motherboard still without pressing on components.
- Wire cutters and a small wire stripper suited to 28–30 AWG insulation.
These aids do not replace the required programmer, compatible glitch hardware or correct timing files; they reduce handling errors while you install them.
How the hardware fits together
An RGH bench has several distinct jobs. The Windows PC runs the software and stores NAND backups. The programmer provides the electrical interface for reading or writing the NAND and configuring supported glitch hardware. The glitch chip, when the chosen method uses one, performs the timed reset operation. The Pico can combine NAND and programming functions in a supported PicoFlasher workflow. The fine wire connects designated motherboard pads to the programmer, chip or RGH3 points shown by the board-specific diagram.
| Job | Hardware | Depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Read and back up NAND | Compatible NAND programmer; Raspberry Pi Pico in a supported PicoFlasher setup | Motherboard, programmer software and correct connection points |
| Generate the glitch | CoolRunner, Matrix, X360ACE or another supported chip | Traditional RGH method and board compatibility |
| Use the southbridge SMC | RGH3 component set and its wiring | Whether the board supports RGH3 |
| Carry signals | 28 AWG or 30 AWG solid-core hookup wire | Exact diagram, route and pad condition |
| Run tools and retain files | Windows PC | Method-specific software and timing files |
Buying checklist by installation type
Traditional glitch-chip installation
- Motherboard-specific compatible glitch chip.
- NAND/glitch-chip programmer, such as a supported xFlasher 360 or equivalent.
- 28 AWG or 30 AWG solid-core hookup wire.
- Correct timing files for the board and chip.
- Raspberry Pi Pico only if the chosen workflow uses PicoFlasher for NAND or timing-file programming.
- Fine-tip temperature-controlled iron, electronics solder and flux.
- Isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs for cleanup.
RGH3 installation
- RGH3 component set specified for the exact motherboard.
- Compatible NAND programmer.
- 28 AWG or 30 AWG solid-core hookup wire.
- RGH3-specific timing or software files where the guide calls for them.
- The same fine soldering and inspection equipment.
Do not add a traditional glitch chip to an RGH3 shopping list unless the documentation for your exact board explicitly calls for one. RGH3’s defining difference is use of the southbridge SMC instead of an external glitch chip.

Step-by-step preparation before soldering
- Identify the motherboard. Use the console’s physical board characteristics and a trusted revision guide. Record the exact family: Xenon, Zephyr, Falcon/Opus, Jasper, Trinity, Corona or Winchester.
- Choose the supported method. Decide between a traditional glitch-chip path and RGH3 only after confirming board compatibility.
- Download and organize the correct files. Keep the NAND software, programmer software and motherboard-specific timing files together. In a PicoFlasher/Matrix Coolrunner workflow, this includes the applicable Octal450 timing files.
- Plan the hardware connections. Print or display the exact diagram, mark every pad and check whether a Corona postfix adapter is required.
- Prepare the bench. Fit a fine tip, verify temperature stability, tin the tip, arrange magnification and lighting, and keep alcohol and cotton swabs ready for cleanup.
- Make the NAND backup first. Use the compatible programmer or supported PicoFlasher setup to read the NAND and retain more than one verified copy before changing the board.
- Install only the specified wires and components. Cut short 28–30 AWG solid-core leads, route them as shown and avoid crossing hot components, fan paths or mechanical edges.
- Inspect every joint. Look for solder bridges, dull or cracked joints, loose strands, lifted pads and accidental contact with neighboring components before powering the console.
- Program and test with the documented files. Apply the timing files and software for the selected board and chip; do not use a file from another revision as an experiment.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying before identifying the board
A chip, postfix adapter or timing file that works on one Xbox 360 revision may be irrelevant to another. The remedy is to pause the build, identify the board and rebuild the parts list around that result.
Treating the Pico as the whole mod
The documented Pico workflow shows NAND dumping and timing-file programming, not a universal Pico-only installation. If your method uses a traditional glitch chip, you still need that compatible chip and its wiring.
Using the wrong wire
Thick power wire is difficult to place on small signal pads, while loose stranded wire can spread strands and create shorts. Use 28 AWG or 30 AWG solid-core hookup wire and keep runs short.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Skipping flux cleanup and inspection
Residue can obscure a poor joint, and a tiny bridge can prevent a boot or damage a neighboring signal. Clean with isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs, then inspect under magnification before reassembly.

Overheating pads
Small motherboard pads and traces can lift when heated for too long or pressed with a large tip. A temperature-controlled fine tip, pre-tinned wire and a short, deliberate joint reduce that risk. If a pad starts moving, stop rather than trying to complete the connection by force.
Skipping the NAND backup
Writing or modifying a console without a verified original dump removes an important recovery option. Read the NAND first, save multiple copies and verify that the files can be read before continuing.
Risk, skill level and when to stop
ConsoleMods warns that the work can brick the console and states: “Please have someone else mod your console if you are not experienced in soldering!” Treat that as a real boundary, not a disclaimer to ignore. If you cannot reliably solder 28–30 AWG wire to small pads, identify a board revision, verify a NAND dump or diagnose a bridge under magnification, outsource the installation to an experienced technician.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Stop immediately if a trace or pad lifts.
- Do not power the board while a wire is loose or a bridge is suspected.
- Do not substitute timing files or diagrams from another motherboard.
- Keep the original NAND dumps and record every hardware change.
Choosing between a Pico-based workflow, a programmer and RGH3
| Option | Best fit | External glitch chip | Main decision points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pico-assisted traditional RGH | A supported setup using PicoFlasher with a compatible chip | Usually yes | Confirm PicoFlasher support, chip compatibility and timing-file family. |
| Dedicated programmer plus traditional chip | Installations documented for a specific programmer/chip combination | Yes | Match programmer, chip, motherboard and wiring diagram. |
| RGH3 | Boards and guides that support the SMC-based method | No external glitch chip | Confirm RGH3 support, component set and exact SMC wiring. |
There is no single “best” kit for every Xbox 360. The correct choice is the one whose programmer, component set, wire points and timing files are documented together for your motherboard.
