For everyday texting between iPhone and Android, start with the built-in Messages app on each phone and use RCS when it is available. It can provide richer messaging across the two platforms, and eligible conversations can be end-to-end encrypted. The catch is that RCS encryption depends on software and provider support, so check the lock or “Encrypted” indicator in the chat rather than assuming every RCS message is protected. Choose a separate messaging app when your group already uses one or needs features beyond native texting.
Which option is best for a mixed iPhone and Android conversation?
There is no single best app for everyone: the right choice depends on whether you want to use the phone’s existing texting app, need a particular service your group already uses, or require encryption confirmed in the conversation itself.
- For ordinary texting: Try Apple Messages on iPhone and Google Messages on Android with RCS enabled. Apple says RCS connects iPhone users with non-Apple devices and supports high-resolution photos and videos, links, delivery and read receipts, and typing indicators. Apple’s explanation of iMessage, RCS and SMS/MMS describes the differences.
- For encryption: Use RCS only when the conversation shows the encryption indicator. Apple and Google announced a beta rollout of cross-platform encrypted RCS on May 11, 2026. Apple specified iOS 26.5 and supported providers for the iPhone beta, paired with the latest Google Messages on Android; availability depends on provider support for everyone in the conversation. Apple’s rollout announcement and its support page give the current conditions.
- For a group’s preferred service: A dedicated app can be the practical choice if everyone already uses it or needs its particular features. Telegram offers official apps for iPhone and iPad and for Android, but platform availability alone does not establish that it is the best fit for your privacy or backup needs. Telegram’s app directory lists its clients.
What changes between iMessage, RCS and SMS/MMS?
Apple Messages is the app; iMessage, RCS and SMS/MMS are different ways it can deliver a message. The mode matters because it affects which devices can participate, which features are available, and whether the conversation is end-to-end encrypted.
| Message type | Where it works | Encryption and practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| iMessage | Between Apple devices | Apple says iMessage conversations are end-to-end encrypted. It is not the messaging mode used to include an Android participant. |
| RCS | Can connect iPhone and Android users when the devices, apps and providers support it | Supports richer features than traditional SMS/MMS. End-to-end encryption is conditional; look for the indicator in the conversation. |
| SMS/MMS | Carrier texting, including as a fallback when a richer mode is unavailable | Not end-to-end encrypted. Photo and video messaging uses the older MMS standard rather than RCS capabilities. |
Apple’s iMessage, RCS and SMS/MMS guide distinguishes the modes and notes that eligible RCS conversations show “Encrypted” with a lock icon. Google likewise says SMS/MMS messages are not end-to-end encrypted.

How to tell whether an RCS chat is encrypted
Do not treat the word “RCS” by itself as proof of end-to-end encryption. The rollout is conditional, and support may differ by provider, device software and messaging app. Check the chat you are using:
- On iPhone: Apple says an encrypted RCS conversation displays “Encrypted” with a lock icon at the top.
- In Google Messages: Google documents a lock on the send button and beside the message timestamp when end-to-end encryption is active.
If that status is absent, do not assume the conversation is end-to-end encrypted. Confirm that RCS is enabled and that the relevant devices, apps and providers support the feature. Apple’s support guidance says every participant’s provider must support encryption; Google’s encryption help page explains the indicator in Google Messages.

Why an encrypted conversation may fall back
Google says eligible encrypted RCS in Google Messages requires both participants to use Google Messages, have RCS enabled, and have data or Wi-Fi. If RCS becomes unavailable or the connection changes, a message may be sent as SMS/MMS instead, which is not end-to-end encrypted. Encryption status can therefore change with the conversation mode; check the indicator again when it matters.
Google also notes that encrypted messages are included in Android device backups and may be accessible to apps granted SMS or notification permissions. That does not mean every backup is exposed to the same parties; it is a reminder that encryption in transit and access through device or app permissions are separate considerations. See Google Messages’ explanation of end-to-end encryption.

When to use a dedicated messaging app
A separate app makes sense when your contacts already use it, or when the group depends on features that native cross-platform texting does not provide. Telegram is confirmed to offer iPhone/iPad and Android apps, as well as desktop and web clients. The available official information here confirms those clients, but does not establish a comparable ranking of Telegram, Signal and WhatsApp for privacy, backups, group features or regional popularity. Choose based on your group’s actual needs and verify the service’s current settings before relying on it for sensitive conversations.
