How to Route AI Agent Requests Through a Credential Gateway

A credential gateway separates agent authentication from upstream provider credentials. Here’s how to route model and tool requests, scope access, and verify the boundary.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Route an AI agent’s model or tool calls to a trusted gateway, not directly to the upstream provider. The agent authenticates to the gateway with a scoped client credential; the gateway checks what that caller may use, attaches its own provider or tool credentials, forwards the request, and returns the response. This keeps long-lived upstream secrets out of agent code, provided the gateway and its credential store are kept inside the trusted boundary.

How the request path works

  1. Point the client at the gateway. Configure the gateway base URL and use a model or tool identifier that the gateway recognizes. LiteLLM documents these as reusable client settings alongside a virtual key. LiteLLM client documentation.
  2. Authenticate the agent to the gateway. Give each agent or workload an appropriate gateway credential rather than placing provider keys in its configuration. LiteLLM supports virtual keys; Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway documents inbound OAuth JWT and IAM SigV4 options, as well as authenticate-only and no-auth modes. LiteLLM client documentation · Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway documentation.
  3. Authorize the requested model or tool. Authentication establishes who is calling; authorization determines whether that caller can invoke the requested target. LiteLLM documents key- and team-based access controls for MCP servers. AgentCore offers inbound authorization modes, but configure target access to match your deployment’s needs. LiteLLM MCP documentation.
  4. Attach upstream credentials at the gateway. Store provider keys in the gateway’s provider configuration or use a supported credential provider for a target. AgentCore documents credential providers for API key or OAuth credentials, and IAM authorization for signing requests. The gateway then makes the upstream call using the appropriate credential. LiteLLM client documentation · Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway documentation.
  5. Return and observe the result. The gateway forwards the response to the client. Review gateway logs, authorization failures, and tracing behavior in your specific deployment. Avoid logging secrets or sensitive request content unless your policy permits it; the cited product documentation does not establish universal automatic redaction.

Choose a gateway based on the job

Model routing, tool access, and secret delivery overlap, but they are not interchangeable functions. Compare the documented capabilities against the request surface and trust boundary you need to control.

Secure the two authentication hops

Treat agent-to-gateway authentication and gateway-to-provider or tool authentication as separate controls. A valid client credential should not automatically grant access to every model, MCP server, or target. Keep upstream credentials in gateway configuration or a dedicated credential provider, and scope client access to the models, tools, teams, and budgets the workload actually needs.

For LiteLLM MCP access, grant a key or team access to the relevant server and verify the denial path: the documentation describes denial when a key lacks access to a requested MCP server. Do not treat the mere existence of a key as permission to use every server. LiteLLM MCP documentation.

Validate compatibility and failure behavior

  • Check the exact client and route. Confirm the endpoint, request shape, model or tool identifier, and protocol support before rollout. LiteLLM’s client guide notes route and client-specific compatibility limitations. LiteLLM client documentation.
  • Do not infer capability from protocol negotiation alone. LiteLLM’s MCP reference says a negotiated protocol version does not prove support for every optional capability. Test the specific features your agent relies on. LiteLLM MCP reference.
  • Test both allowed and denied calls. Confirm an authorized request reaches its target and an unauthorized model or tool request is rejected before it can call upstream.
  • Inspect logs and traces. Verify which request details and credentials, if any, are recorded in your deployment. Redaction behavior is not established as universal by the cited documentation, so configure and review it rather than assuming it.
  • Plan for credential rotation and outages. Decide how gateway credentials and upstream credentials will be rotated, how failures are surfaced to the agent, and whether retries could duplicate a tool action. These are deployment controls to define for your own system, not guarantees made by the products cited here.

When a credential gateway is the right boundary

Use a model or tool gateway when you need a controlled request path that can centralize routing, caller authorization, and upstream credentials. Use a secret-delivery system when the main requirement is obtaining or mediating secrets for an application. A Vault proxy is not automatically a model-routing gateway, just as a model gateway is not automatically a general-purpose secret broker; choose according to the traffic you need to govern.
