Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou do not need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. A PIN prompt authorizes a payment or another protected action. Before approving anything, check the payee name and amount shown in your UPI app; never rely only on a caller’s explanation, a QR code, or a promise of a refund or reward.
Do I need a UPI PIN to receive money?
No. NPCI says a UPI PIN is not needed to receive money, and that scanning a QR code and entering a PIN is meant for making a payment. Treat any request to enter your PIN as an authorization decision, not as a step to collect funds. Never tell your PIN to a caller, seller, or person claiming to be bank or app support; NPCI says bank customer support will not ask for it. NPCI’s UPI safety guidance

How to check a UPI request before approving it
- Read what the app says you are doing. Check whether the screen is asking you to pay, approve a collect request, or perform another action. Do not proceed based on the other person’s description alone.
- Verify the payee and amount. Confirm that the name and amount displayed in your app match the person or business and the transaction you intended. If they do not, cancel or decline and verify the details through a separate, trusted channel.
- Stop if the request requires secrets or unusual access. Do not share your PIN, OTP, or password. Do not install an app, share your screen, or follow a stranger’s instructions while inside your payment app.
- Verify the contact independently. Use the bank’s or payment app’s official in-app support route or a contact method you already trust. Search results, social-media grievance posts, and unsolicited callers can lead to fake support contacts.
These checks are practical safeguards, not a formal risk score. An unexpected request is not automatically fraudulent, but you should approve it only when you understand the action and can independently verify the recipient and details. NPCI’s UPI safety guidance and RBI’s public awareness notice warn about PIN, OTP, and password disclosure, SIM swaps, message links, and spurious apps that may access sensitive device information.
Someone sent me a collect request—should I approve it?
Approve it only if you recognize the request, intend to pay that person or business, and the payee and amount shown in your app are correct. A collect request is a request for you to authorize a payment; it is not proof that money is being sent to you. If someone says you must approve it to receive a refund, prize, cashback, or other incoming payment, stop and verify independently. NPCI’s safety guidance describes fake cashback links and QR codes that promise rewards in exchange for a PIN.

Is it safe to scan a QR code to get paid?
A QR code is not proof that money is coming in. NPCI states that “scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is only meant for making payments, not for receiving them.” Before authorizing a transaction after scanning, inspect the payee and amount in your app. Do not enter your PIN to claim money or a reward. NPCI’s fraud-awareness guidance and the Government of India cyber-safety manual advise users to verify the payee or QR before proceeding.
Common UPI scam warning signs
- A reward or refund that requires a PIN: Cashback, prizes, and refunds should not be used to pressure you into authorizing an unexplained payment.
- Urgency, threats, or fear: A caller may threaten consequences or insist you act immediately. Pause and verify through a trusted channel rather than following instructions under pressure.
- Unsolicited links, QR codes, or app installs: Do not open a payment link, scan a code, or install an unfamiliar app just because a message or caller tells you to.
- Fake support contacts: Be cautious with phone numbers found in search results or social-media posts. Start from the payment app or bank’s official support route instead.
- Investment or online earning promises: Treat requests to send money under a high-return or urgent investment promise as a reason to stop and verify.
- Requests for credentials or device access: Never disclose your PIN, OTP, or password, and do not grant screen access to someone who contacted you unexpectedly.

Does opening my UPI app approve a payment?
No—not by itself. In a January 13, 2025 clarification about the “jumped-deposit” scam claim, NPCI said: “Simply opening a UPI or bank application does not automatically approve a transaction.” NPCI explained that, for the transaction described, a user would have to navigate to the request, choose “pay,” and authorize it with the UPI PIN. This addresses the claim that merely opening an app automatically transfers money; it is not a guarantee against every kind of account or device compromise. NPCI’s January 13, 2025 clarification

What should I do if I was scammed on UPI?
- Stop interacting. End the call or conversation and do not follow further instructions, open more links, or provide another PIN or OTP.
- Contact your bank and payment app promptly. Use their in-app complaint channels or independently verified official contact details. NPCI says users can raise grievances or check transaction status through the participating UPI app. NPCI’s UPI FAQs
- Report cyber financial fraud. Call 1930 promptly for immediate reporting, then file a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. The Ministry of Home Affairs’ cybercrime guidance describes 1930 and the portal as reporting routes. Ministry of Home Affairs guidance
- Keep the evidence. Save transaction IDs, dates, amounts, screenshots, messages, phone numbers, and complaint acknowledgements. These records can help when you report the incident to your bank, app, or authorities.
If a transaction is shown as failed or pending but your account was debited, use the app’s complaint flow and contact your bank. NPCI’s FAQ says failed transactions should reverse and advises contacting the bank if a refund has not arrived within one hour; that FAQ guidance is not a universal fraud-reimbursement deadline. NPCI also says an initiated payment cannot be stopped, so recovery is not guaranteed and depends on the case and the bank or app’s complaint process. NPCI’s UPI FAQs
