GST filing and correction rules depend on the country. The steps below explain the ordinary process for regular taxpayers using India’s GST Portal; they are not universal GST instructions. In India, GSTR-1 reports outward supplies and GSTR-3B is a separate return, so filing or correcting one does not automatically take care of the other.
First identify the country, taxpayer type and filing period
Before preparing a return, confirm which country’s GST system applies, your taxpayer category, the return form required, and whether you file monthly or quarterly. Forms, correction windows, due dates and consequences for errors differ by jurisdiction. The India steps below are based on GST Portal guidance for regular taxpayers; taxpayers with a different status or filing obligation should confirm the applicable process with the relevant tax authority.

How to file a GST return on India’s GST Portal
For a regular taxpayer in India, the usual portal route is Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard. GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B have distinct roles and must be prepared as separate returns when applicable.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the returns dashboard. Sign in to the GST Portal and go to Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard.
- Select the period. Choose the financial year and tax period, then open the tile for the relevant return.
- Prepare GSTR-1. Enter outward-supply details online, or prepare the data with the GST offline tool and upload it. The portal also documents preparation through third-party Application Service Providers (ASPs) and GST Suvidha Providers (GSPs); these are workflow options, not a requirement to use a particular provider.
- Check the entries and validations. Review invoice-level details, the summarized outward-supply information, and any applicable amendments. Resolve validation messages and correct data errors before submitting.
- Prepare GSTR-3B separately. Complete the applicable GSTR-3B and check the draft before filing. The portal’s filing guidance includes previewing the draft, selecting the authorized signatory, filing through an available electronic verification method, and downloading the filed return.
- Keep the filed copy and records. Download the submitted return and retain it with the invoices and accounting records used to prepare it.
India’s ordinary GSTR-1 due dates
The GST Portal lists the ordinary GSTR-1 due date as the 11th of the following month for monthly filers, or the 13th of the month after the quarter for quarterly filers. Government notifications may extend a due date, and the applicable obligation depends on taxpayer type and filing frequency. The portal says GSTR-1 is required even when there has been no business activity. Check the current period’s applicable date rather than relying on the ordinary calendar date alone.

How to correct an India GSTR-1 error
Same tax period, before filing GSTR-3B: consider GSTR-1A
India’s GST Portal describes optional Form GSTR-1A as a way to amend a record already reported in that period’s GSTR-1 or add a missed record. It becomes available after GSTR-1 is filed or after its due date, whichever is later, and may be filed before GSTR-3B for that period. It is available once for the period, and the changes flow into GSTR-3B. According to the portal guide, the supplier’s changes are reflected for the recipient’s input tax credit in the next period’s GSTR-2B.
Earlier-period invoice details: amend through GSTR-1 within the stated window
For earlier-period GSTR-1 invoice details, the portal guide describes making amendments through GSTR-1. It gives November 30 of the following financial year as the cutoff for errors or omissions relating to the previous financial year; its example is that the cutoff for FY 2022–23 was November 30, 2023. Confirm the rule and deadline for the relevant year before relying on that date.

Filed GSTR-3B or another return: identify the affected item first
Do not assume the GSTR-1A process applies to an incorrect filed GSTR-3B or another return. The available portal guidance does not establish a complete correction procedure for every filed return type and error. Identify the affected form, period, tax amount and reporting field, then consult current GST Portal guidance or a qualified adviser before acting.
How correction procedures differ outside India
These examples show why one country’s correction instructions should not be applied to another. They are not substitutes for checking the rules of the jurisdiction that governs your return.
Rank #3
| Jurisdiction | Correction approach described by the tax authority | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| India | Optional same-period GSTR-1A may be used before that period’s GSTR-3B, under the conditions described above. Earlier-period invoice details are amended through GSTR-1 within the stated cutoff. | These routes do not establish how to correct every filed return type or error. |
| Canada | The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) says not to file a new GST/HST return to correct one already filed. Its online route is the account’s “Adjust a return” function. A signed request by mail is another route and must identify the business number, reporting period and corrected amounts. | These instructions apply to Canada’s GST/HST system, not India’s GST returns. |
| New Zealand | Inland Revenue accepts eligible corrections through myIR, in the next return, or by asking Inland Revenue to amend. Its guide allows certain GST-calculation corrections in the next period within stated thresholds and requires details about the affected period, amount, reason and supporting information. | Eligibility and thresholds are specific to New Zealand; the guide says not to send a replacement return. |
Checks that can prevent avoidable filing problems
- Match the selected financial year and tax period to your records.
- Compare outward-supply entries with invoices and accounting records before filing.
- Review the system-generated draft and address validation errors before submission.
- Confirm the filing frequency and current due date that apply to your taxpayer type.
- Download the filed return and keep supporting records together.
- Check any displayed late-filing interest or other amount against current authority guidance instead of assuming every system calculation is correct.
What to know about late filing charges and interest
There is no single GST penalty amount that can safely be quoted for every country, return, period or error. For example, the CRA says a late GST/HST return may attract a penalty if money is owed and that overdue balances may accrue interest; it also describes calculation rules and exceptions. Those are Canadian provisions, not India rules.
For India, a Goods and Services Tax Network advisory dated March 6, 2026 says the portal auto-calculates interest on delayed GSTR-3B filing and provides a recomputation option if the displayed amount appears discrepant. The advisory also describes a technical issue affecting some taxpayers’ interest calculations for the February 2026 period, involving the minimum cash balance in the electronic cash ledger. That is a period-specific notice, not a guarantee that all displayed calculations are correct.
When an error may change tax payable or a return has already been filed, establish the applicable correction route and any resulting liability from current guidance for your jurisdiction and period. If the error is complex or the treatment is unclear, a qualified tax adviser can help determine the appropriate filing and correction steps.
