Those controls stop LinkedIn’s automatic network broadcast; they do not hide the saved role from a coworker who visits your profile. Notification preferences can reduce the alerts you receive, but they cannot make profile text, feed items, or your Activity section private.

What stops LinkedIn from broadcasting a new side job?
The global Share profile updates switch is the primary control. With it off, LinkedIn does not automatically announce ordinary profile edits—such as adding an employer, changing a headline, or rewriting your About section—to your network. The setting applies before you save the change, so disable it first rather than trying to retract a post afterward.

LinkedIn also presents a Share with network option while you edit profile information. Treat this as a per-edit safety check. If the global setting is on, switch this individual control off before saving the side-hustle entry. Using both controls gives you a broad default and a final check at the moment of editing.

Neither setting is a profile-privacy lock. LinkedIn’s own help guidance says, “Anyone that views your profile will see your edits as soon as you save them, even if you haven’t chosen to notify your network about any changes you make.” A coworker who deliberately opens your profile can therefore discover the second job even though no announcement was sent.
How to disable profile-update sharing before adding freelance work
- Sign in to LinkedIn on a desktop browser and open Me > Settings & Privacy. You can also go directly to linkedin.com/psettings/.
- Select Visibility in the settings navigation.
- Open Visibility of your LinkedIn activity.
- Choose Share profile updates and switch it to Off.
- Open your profile and start editing the second job, freelance position, business, headline, About text, featured link, or other item.
- Before clicking Save, look for Share with network in the edit panel and leave it disabled.
- Save the profile change only after both sharing controls are off.
The order matters. LinkedIn says profile updates can be distributed after a save when sharing is enabled, so turning the setting off afterward is not a reliable cleanup method. Disabling the global switch first also protects you if the profile editor does not display the per-edit control for a particular field.
Which notification settings should you review?
Profile sharing and notification delivery are separate systems. In Settings & Privacy > Notifications, review categories related to network activity, including Activity in your network, Updates from connections, and Updates from people you follow. Turn off the individual notification types you do not want to receive.

LinkedIn can deliver notifications in three places:
- In-app: alerts shown in LinkedIn’s notifications area.
- Email: messages sent to the address on your account.
- Mobile push: alerts delivered by the LinkedIn app.
Review email and mobile-push preferences separately from the notification type itself. LinkedIn notes that disabling push alone does not remove an in-app notification record; you must turn off the underlying notification type if you do not want new alerts of that kind in LinkedIn.
These switches change what you receive, not what appears to other members. LinkedIn’s help wording is explicit: “Turning off notifications only affects the notifications you receive. It doesn’t change the content that appears in your feed.” A notification preference therefore cannot substitute for turning off profile-update sharing.

What coworkers can still see after sharing is disabled?
Switching off broadcasts prevents an automatic announcement; it does not make a side hustle invisible. A signed-in LinkedIn member can generally view profiles, subject to the privacy controls on your account. If a coworker searches for you, follows a direct profile link, or opens your name from another interaction, the saved role may be visible.

Potentially exposed areas include:
- The second position in your Experience section.
- A headline that mentions freelance work or a business.
- Descriptions in your About section.
- Featured links, documents, or portfolio items.
- Public posts, comments, articles, and other activity.
The Activity section can remain on your profile even when you choose not to notify your network about profile changes. Inspecting that section is important because disabling sharing does not automatically remove older posts or interactions. A profile-update item may also remain accessible through notifications if someone reacts to or comments on it, even when the item does not appear in the Posts tab.
For that reason, “no notification” and “no discovery” are different goals. The settings in this workflow address the first. Achieving the second would require deciding whether the side-hustle information should be on a generally visible LinkedIn profile at all.

How long can LinkedIn take to distribute an update?
When sharing is enabled, LinkedIn gives different timing windows for different update types. Job updates may take up to two hours to reach the network. Education updates may take up to 24 hours. Work-anniversary notifications are sent during the relevant month rather than at one fixed moment.
These windows are reasons to disable sharing before saving, not waiting periods in which you can safely change the setting later. If an automatic post has already been generated, switching the control off does not guarantee that every copy, alert, or reaction disappears.
How to verify that the side-hustle edit is not being promoted
- Reopen Settings & Privacy > Visibility > Visibility of your LinkedIn activity > Share profile updates and confirm the switch still reads Off.
- Open the profile and review the saved position. Confirm that the editor’s Share with network option was not enabled during the save.
- Visit your profile’s Activity section and inspect posts, comments, articles, and profile activity for an unwanted announcement.
- Open Settings & Privacy > Notifications and check Activity in your network, Updates from connections, and Updates from people you follow.
- Review the email and mobile-push settings for those categories. Remember that push suppression alone does not remove an in-app notification type.
- If you find an existing post or activity item, handle that item directly; changing future notification preferences does not delete content that is already present.
Verification is more dependable than assuming the setting worked because no alert appeared immediately. LinkedIn’s timing windows mean an update can be delayed, and the Activity section can contain material that is not shown as a conventional post.
Common situations and the safest response
You are adding the second job now
Turn off Share profile updates, confirm Share with network is off in the editor, save the position, and then inspect Activity. This blocks the automatic broadcast while preserving the role on your profile for visitors.
You already saved the job while sharing was enabled
Turn off the global sharing control immediately to prevent future profile edits from being announced. Then inspect Activity and Notifications for an automatically generated item. Do not assume that a delayed alert will be canceled merely because you changed the setting after saving.
You want fewer alerts on your own account
Use the Notifications page to turn off unwanted categories and review email and mobile-push delivery. This improves your alert experience but does not alter what coworkers can see in their feeds or on your profile.
You want coworkers unable to discover the side hustle
The broadcast controls are insufficient for that goal. They suppress automatic announcements only. A saved Experience entry, headline, About text, featured link, or public activity can still be visible to a profile visitor, so decide whether that information belongs on a broadly viewable profile.
