Which Laptop Should You Choose for Adobe Premiere Pro Video Editing?

Choose a Premiere Pro laptop by footage, memory, GPU, screen and storage workflow. Compare Adobe’s 26.x guidance with Mac and Windows creator options.

For Adobe Premiere Pro, choose a laptop by matching its memory, graphics hardware, display and media-storage setup to the footage you edit—not by brand name alone. Adobe’s current recommendations for Premiere 26.x call for 16 GB of RAM for HD on Windows, 32 GB or more for 4K and higher, and at least 4 GB of GPU memory on supported Windows graphics configurations. For Apple silicon Macs, Adobe recommends 16 GB of unified memory. Those are Premiere-specific guidelines; check the current system requirements for any other editing application you plan to use.

Start with Adobe Premiere Pro’s requirements

Adobe’s technical requirements page for Premiere versions 26.0, 26.2, 26.3, 26.3.2, 26.5, 26.5.1 and 26.5.2 is the useful baseline for a Premiere-focused purchase. The recommendations differ by operating system, so do not compare a Windows RAM figure directly with a Mac’s unified-memory figure as though they were interchangeable.

Premiere 26.x recommendation Windows macOS
Operating system Windows 11 v24H2 Apple silicon M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra or newer
Memory 16 GB for HD; 32 GB or more for 4K and higher 16 GB unified memory
Graphics Supported NVIDIA, Intel or AMD GPU with at least 4 GB GPU memory Not stated as a separate GPU-memory figure in Adobe’s recommendation
Display 1920×1080 or better 1920×1080 or better
Storage Fast internal SSD for the application and cache; additional high-speed drive for media Fast internal SSD for the application and cache; additional high-speed drive for media
HDR Adobe recommends DisplayHDR 1000 for HDR workflows

These specifications are guidance for Premiere, not a guarantee of smooth playback for every codec, effect stack, sequence or export. Source footage, timeline complexity and the number of concurrent applications all affect how much headroom is useful. A laptop meeting a minimum requirement may still feel constrained in a demanding workflow.

How to choose memory and graphics for your footage

HD projects

For Windows HD editing, Adobe’s recommendation is 16 GB of RAM. Treat that as a Premiere baseline rather than a promise that every project will be comfortable, especially if you work with layered effects, multitask heavily or keep large applications open alongside the editor. When comparing Windows models, confirm both installed memory and whether it can be upgraded.

4K and higher-resolution projects

For Windows 4K and higher-resolution editing, Adobe recommends 32 GB or more of RAM. For a Mac with Apple silicon, Adobe’s listed recommendation is 16 GB of unified memory. Unified memory is part of the Apple silicon system architecture, so compare Macs against Adobe’s Mac guidance rather than trying to translate the Windows number one-for-one.

GPU and effects workload

On Windows, Adobe recommends a supported GPU with at least 4 GB of graphics memory. Check the exact GPU in the laptop configuration, not just the product-family name: retailers may sell several versions with different graphics hardware. This is especially important if your projects rely on GPU-accelerated effects or high-resolution timelines.

Adobe’s requirements do not establish that a given number of GPU cores on one architecture equals a particular GPU-memory or performance figure on another. Avoid choosing between Windows and Mac based on an unsupported benchmark equivalence; prioritize application support and the configuration you will actually buy.

Those figures describe the review sample, not every ProArt P16 configuration or retail listing. Confirm the specific GPU, memory and panel before purchase. Choose a display for the work you do

Adobe recommends a 1920×1080-or-better display for Premiere. Resolution alone does not establish color accuracy or HDR capability, however. If you do color-critical work, compare the exact panel specification and look for independent measurements tied to that specific configuration. The ProArt P16 figures above are one review’s measurements of its tested unit, not a guarantee for the whole product line.

Tuned dual speakers deliver clear audio for calls and media, while the non-backlit keyboard and precision touchpad provide comfortable, reliable input. Ideal for students, home users, and everyday professionals seeking dependable performance.

For HDR workflows, Adobe recommends DisplayHDR 1000. Check that the laptop’s specific display meets the requirement rather than assuming that an OLED panel, a high resolution or an “HDR” label is sufficient.

Plan storage around the edit, not just the laptop

Adobe’s Premiere guidance separates the fast internal SSD used for the application and cache from an additional high-speed drive for media. That makes storage a workflow choice as well as a capacity question: keep the software and cache on a fast internal drive, then plan a fast second drive for footage and project media.

An external SSD is one possible way to provide additional media storage. Adobe’s cited requirements do not specify a particular external drive model or capacity, so choose one based on your footage volume, connection speed and working habits rather than treating a specific accessory as Adobe-endorsed.

Check future Premiere compatibility before you buy

Adobe announced on August 27, 2026 that Premiere v27.0 will require Windows 11 v24H2 or later and a detected GPU on Windows. On Mac, the announced requirements are macOS 15 or later and Apple silicon M1 or newer. Adobe says Intel-based Macs can continue using Premiere 26.x but will not support v27.0 and later.

This is advance compatibility guidance for a future version, not a statement that Premiere 27.0 has already shipped. If you plan to keep a laptop for several years, factor the announced operating-system and processor requirements into the decision.

A practical laptop-buying checklist

  1. Confirm the software. Use Adobe’s current Premiere requirements for Premiere. For another editor, check that application’s own official requirements; Premiere’s specifications do not prove compatibility or performance for other software.
  2. Match memory to footage. Use Adobe’s Windows guidance of 16 GB for HD and 32 GB or more for 4K and higher. For Apple silicon, use its 16 GB unified-memory recommendation as the cited Premiere baseline.
  3. Verify the exact GPU. For Windows, confirm the supported GPU and at least 4 GB of GPU memory specified in Adobe’s recommendation. Do not rely on a laptop family name that covers multiple configurations.
  4. Inspect the display specification. Check resolution and, for color or HDR work, the relevant panel details for the exact SKU. Adobe’s general display recommendation is 1920×1080 or better, with DisplayHDR 1000 recommended for HDR workflows.
  5. Map your storage workflow. Make sure the internal SSD can serve the application and cache, and plan an additional high-speed drive for media.
  6. Balance performance with mobility. Consider battery life, weight, screen size and controls alongside the specifications. The cited ProArt P16 review notes that its creator-focused configuration comes with a battery-life trade-off.
  7. Compare the actual purchase configurations. Check price, memory, GPU, display and availability for the exact listings; specifications and availability can differ within a model family.
