You need a local PostgreSQL installation if you want to run a database server on your own computer for learning or development. If you only need to connect to a database hosted elsewhere, you may not need a local server—first confirm your project or course provides access to one. For a local setup, use the official PostgreSQL download page to choose an installer or package for your operating system; building from source is generally intended for PostgreSQL or extension developers.

Do you need to install PostgreSQL on your computer?

PostgreSQL is a database system with a server that stores and manages data. Installing it locally gives you a server you can use on your own machine, which is useful for learning SQL, experimenting, and developing applications without depending on a remote database.

You may not need to install the server if you only need to connect to a database that someone else has already hosted. That depends on whether your project, workplace, or course gives you access and connection details. PostgreSQL’s server setup and operation documentation explains server setup and client connections.

How do I install PostgreSQL?

  1. Choose your operating system. Open the official PostgreSQL downloads page and select Windows, macOS, or Linux.
  2. Choose a ready-made installer or package. For ordinary use, prefer a binary installer or package when one is available for your system. The PostgreSQL documentation recommends binary packages for users of the system; building from source is mainly for people developing PostgreSQL or extensions. See installation from binaries.
  3. Follow the platform-specific instructions. Installer options, package commands, and supported operating-system versions can change. Use the current instructions linked from the relevant official platform page rather than relying on an old command or a startup step written for another package.
  4. Complete setup and confirm the server is running. Follow the installer or package’s instructions for creating or selecting a database cluster and starting the server. Then use a PostgreSQL client to connect. The exact steps depend on the package and operating system.

How do I install PostgreSQL on Windows?

Go to the official Windows installers page and follow its link to the EDB-certified graphical installer. The PostgreSQL project says the installer is hosted by EDB, not on PostgreSQL community servers. It includes the PostgreSQL server, pgAdmin, and StackBuilder. Check the page’s current platform-support details before installing.

Use the installer’s prompts to complete setup. For how to start the server and connect afterward, follow the instructions that came with the installer; do not assume a command or service name from another Windows package applies.

How do I install PostgreSQL on macOS?

The official macOS packages page lists several routes, including the EDB installer, Postgres.app, Homebrew, MacPorts, and Fink. Choose the option that fits how you prefer to manage software:

  • Graphical installer: The EDB-certified installer linked from the PostgreSQL page includes the server, pgAdmin, and StackBuilder.
  • Postgres.app: The project describes this as a native menu-bar app. Opening it starts a server ready for connections; closing it stops the server.
  • Package manager: Homebrew, MacPorts, and Fink are also listed. Follow the current instructions for the manager you use. Formula names and version-specific commands can change, so check the current package details rather than treating an example command as universally current.

How do I install PostgreSQL on Linux?

Start with the official Linux downloads page and select your distribution. When PostgreSQL is available through the distribution’s package management, the PostgreSQL project recommends that route because it integrates with the operating system, including patching and other management functions.

Commands differ between Linux distributions, so use the distribution-specific instructions linked from that page. Those instructions are also the right place to check how the package creates a database cluster and manages the server.

Do I need pgAdmin to use PostgreSQL?

No. pgAdmin is a management tool, not the PostgreSQL server itself. The EDB-certified graphical installer linked from the official Windows and macOS pages includes pgAdmin, but the installation pages do not establish that every PostgreSQL installation or workflow requires it. You can choose the client or management approach that suits your setup.

How do I start PostgreSQL after installing it?

There is no single startup instruction that applies to every installation. A packaged version or vendor installer may follow its own operating-system conventions. Postgres.app, for example, runs its server while the app is open and stops it when the app closes. For other setups, use the package’s instructions and the official server setup and operation guide, which covers database clusters, starting and stopping the server, client connections, and security.

If a client cannot connect, first check the instructions for your installed package to confirm that the server is running and that you are using the connection details it provides. Avoid copying a service name, startup command, or connection setting from instructions for a different operating system or installation route.
