There is no reliable, universal estimate of extra runtime for any one setting. Results depend on the laptop, display, battery condition and workload.

Which settings should you change first?
- Lower screen brightness. Set it to the lowest level that remains comfortable and readable in your current lighting.
- Shorten the screen-off timer on battery. This saves power when you step away without slowing work while the screen is active.
- Choose an efficient system power mode. Start with a balanced or automatic option; use a stronger battery-saving mode if you need more runtime and can accept its tradeoffs.
- Consider a lower or dynamic refresh rate. Do this only if your laptop offers the option and you are comfortable with less-smooth motion.
- Check which apps use battery before restricting background work. Keep essential syncing, communications and accessibility functions available.
This is a practical order based on likely disruption, not a measured ranking that applies to every laptop.
Windows 11: where to find the useful settings
Power mode and Energy saver
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and choose a more efficient mode for everyday productivity. The available choices depend on the PC and its manufacturer. Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guide explains the options.

For more aggressive savings, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy saver. You can turn it on continuously or have it activate at a battery level you choose. Windows 11 version 24H2 and later uses the name Energy saver in place of Battery saver. Microsoft says the feature manages system and app power use; it can reduce background activity and syncing. Its technical documentation says brightness is reduced by 30 percent by default, subject to OEM configuration and user controls. If you rely on background sync or prompt notifications, check that they still behave as needed.
Microsoft’s Energy Saver documentation for Windows 11 24H2 and later says, “To maximize the device’s battery life, Windows recommends users to enable energy saver all the time, even if the device battery still has plenty of charge left.” That recommendation prioritizes battery life; whether to follow it depends on how much background activity and convenience you need.

Brightness, screen timeout and sleep
Go to Settings > System > Display > Brightness and lower the level as far as remains comfortable. Some devices offer adaptive brightness controls.
For battery use, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep. Some Windows 11 versions or pages label this Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Set the screen to turn off sooner when idle, and choose a sleep delay that suits your usual breaks. Windows allows separate timings for battery and plugged-in use. Microsoft identifies brightness reduction as the most effective way to reduce power while a mobile computer’s display is in use. Its 2021 technical overview estimates that the display may use up to 40 percent of total system power; that is a general estimate, not a promise of equivalent battery savings from dimming your particular laptop.

Refresh rate and app-specific settings
Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. If available, select a lower refresh rate or a dynamic refresh option. Higher refresh rates make motion look smoother but use more power; a lower rate may be noticeable when scrolling or watching motion. Dynamic refresh support depends on the display hardware.
To review app use, check Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage. Restrict only apps whose background activity you can safely do without. For suitable apps, Settings > System > Display > Graphics may let you choose a power-saving graphics preference.

Dark mode and wireless
Dark mode may help reduce display power on OLED screens; do not expect the same benefit on every LCD. Turn Wi-Fi or Bluetooth off only when you do not need them. Avoid changing advanced wireless-adapter power policies as a routine battery tip: Microsoft warns that custom policies can cause compatibility problems with adapters or access points.

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery. Apple describes Low Power Mode as reducing energy use to increase battery life. Energy Mode may offer Low Power, Automatic and, on supported models, High Power. Apple says Automatic uses the best performance level; High Power uses more energy to improve sustained workload performance. Available choices vary by Mac model.

Why the best choice depends on your laptop
Display type, brightness, refresh-rate support, battery condition, and the work you are doing all affect the result. A setting that helps one laptop may make little difference on another. The workload matters too: sustained CPU or graphics work places different demands on the system than light productivity. Background syncing needs and visual preferences also affect which tradeoffs are acceptable.
Official guidance does not establish comparable runtime gains for each setting across laptop models. Treat the display’s estimated share of system power as context, not as an expected percentage increase in battery life. If you need a dependable setting for everyday work, make the low-disruption changes first and use more restrictive options only when you need additional runtime.
