How to Start Streaming on Twitch: Equipment, Software, and Setup

Start a Twitch stream with a stable connection and an encoder—then choose a computer, console, or phone workflow and add optional gear only if you need it.

You can start streaming on Twitch with a stable internet connection and a device that can encode and send video. You do not need a powerful PC, dedicated microphone, webcam, or capture card for every setup. Use a computer with broadcasting software, a console’s built-in broadcast option, or a phone; add gear only when your chosen stream needs it. Twitch’s streaming FAQ explains the basic requirements.

What you need to start streaming

Twitch’s general guidance boils down to two essentials: a stable internet connection and a hardware or software encoder that can broadcast video. An encoder might be a computer running an app, a gaming console, or a mobile device. Twitch does not require a powerful computer for every broadcast.

The rest depends on what you want viewers to see and hear. A game stream may need a source for the game; a talk stream needs a way to capture your voice if you plan to speak. You can begin with equipment you already own and add accessories to solve specific problems.

Optional equipment

  • Microphone: Optional. If you want voice commentary or conversation with chat, try an existing headset mic first. A separate USB microphone is an upgrade, not a requirement. Twitch says, “No, you don’t need a mic or camera to stream.” Twitch’s FAQ covers both.
  • Camera: Optional. You can stream without appearing on camera. If you choose to, a webcam can be added as a video capture source in OBS.
  • Capture card: Needed only for some workflows that bring video from an external device into a computer. It is not a general Twitch requirement.
  • Ethernet cable: Optional if your setup can connect by wire to a router. Twitch calls for stable internet, not Ethernet specifically.

OBS documents webcams and capture cards as possible sources in its Quick Start Guide.

Choose how you will broadcast

Pick a path based on the device you want to stream from and how much control you need over the layout. Software availability, features, and licensing can change, so check Twitch’s recommended broadcasting software page and the Creator Dashboard’s current supported-tool list.

Path Best fit What to know
Desktop broadcasting software Streaming a computer game, screen, or a mix of sources Apps such as OBS let you build scenes from game or display capture, windows, images, audio, and optional camera sources. Compare device compatibility and the features you need; some tools may be free or paid.
Console or other hardware encoder Broadcasting from a console or another device that can encode video Twitch recognizes consoles and other physical devices as possible encoders. Use the device’s current Twitch broadcast flow; menus vary by platform.
Phone Broadcasting from a mobile device, including mobile-oriented content You can use the Twitch mobile app or a supported mobile broadcasting app. App availability, features, and pricing can change; check current listings and Twitch guidance.

  3. Open Settings > Audio and select the intended microphone and desktop audio devices. Speak or play audio and confirm the relevant meters respond.
  4. Review the output settings and check that the scene looks and sounds right.
  5. Run a short test before the public broadcast. OBS recommends testing for a few minutes rather than going live unprepared.

Console or other hardware encoder

A console or another device with a built-in broadcast flow can stream without a dedicated streaming computer, according to Twitch’s general streaming FAQ. Start the broadcast from the device’s current Twitch option and follow its on-screen instructions. Because the exact menus depend on the device and can change, use its current platform-specific help rather than relying on a universal button sequence.

Connect to Twitch and protect your stream key

A software encoder may need a stream key to connect to your channel. Twitch’s instructions place it at Creator Dashboard > Settings > Stream. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen, post it, or share it. If it is exposed, consult Twitch’s stream key FAQ for account-specific guidance.

First-stream checklist

  1. Prepare your account. Sign in or create a Twitch account, personalize your profile, review moderation settings, and read the Twitch Community Guidelines and getting-started guidance.
  2. Choose the encoder and app. Decide whether to use desktop software, a console or device broadcast flow, or a phone. If using software, check Twitch’s current supported broadcasting options.
  3. Build a simple scene if using OBS. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard and add only the sources you need.
  4. Check sound and picture. Verify the intended audio devices and meters, review output settings, and confirm that the scene shows the right content.
  5. Connect safely. Enter the stream key in your software encoder if required, and keep it private. The Twitch mobile app does not require one.
  6. Test before going live. Check video, audio, and connectivity with a short test; adjust anything that is missing or unclear.
  7. Set stream details and start. Add a clear title and category, go live through your chosen path, and respond to chat if you are able.

Common first-stream problems to check

  • No microphone sound: In OBS, check Settings > Audio for the intended input device, then speak and watch its meter.
  • Game or screen is missing: Confirm the scene includes the correct capture source and that the source points to the content you intend to show.
  • Wrong or absent desktop audio: Check the selected desktop audio device and its meter while audio is playing.
  • Connection or quality trouble: Test before the public stream and check both the connection and the app’s current settings. A wired connection is one option when practical, not a universal requirement or guaranteed fix.
  • Software will not connect: Check that you are using the current stream key from Creator Dashboard settings, and never reveal it publicly.
