The regular iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are not on Apple’s compatibility list. Hardware eligibility is only one part of the answer: you also need iOS 27, a supported matching device-and-Siri language, and a region where Siri AI is available.
Siri AI remains a beta feature. Apple Support says, “Siri AI is currently available in English. Availability varies by region and platform.” Some of the most advanced voice capabilities require newer hardware than the general Apple Intelligence list.

Does iPhone 15 support Apple Intelligence?
The answer depends on which iPhone 15 you mean. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are supported. The standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are not included in Apple’s current compatibility list.
That distinction is important because the model names are similar but the hardware requirements are not. Buying or already owning an iPhone 15 does not automatically provide access to Apple Intelligence. If your phone is an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, it meets Apple’s named minimum hardware generation, subject to the software, language, and region conditions below.
Does iPhone 16 have Apple Intelligence?
Yes. Apple’s current requirements include iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, and iPhone 16e. Apple also uses broader “and later” wording for newer families, but the exact feature set can change as new software and models are released.
An iPhone 16 model therefore clears the hardware requirement for the general Apple Intelligence and Siri AI experience. It still needs iOS 27 and a supported language and region. A compatible model may also receive a feature later than another model if Apple assigns that feature a higher device threshold.

What software is required?
Apple’s current Siri AI guidance requires iOS 27. Updating to iOS 27 is necessary, but it does not by itself guarantee access. Apple treats the following as separate checks:
- Hardware: iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 models and later listed by Apple, or iPhone Air.
- Operating system: iOS 27.
- Language: the iPhone’s device language and Siri language must match a supported language.
- Region and account location: availability varies, with specific restrictions in the European Union and mainland China.
- Feature rollout: Siri AI is currently identified as a beta, and some capabilities have a narrower model list.
Apple’s broader Apple Intelligence language information should not be treated as proof that every language is currently available for Siri AI. Apple Support’s September 22, 2026 guidance says Siri AI is currently available in English, while also noting that availability varies by region and platform.
How to turn on Siri AI on a compatible iPhone
Once your iPhone meets the requirements, Apple’s setup flow is:
- Update the iPhone. Open Settings > General > Software Update and install iOS 27 if it is offered. Keep the phone connected to power and Wi-Fi during a major update.
- Open Siri settings. Go to Settings > Siri. The exact wording can vary slightly if Siri has not yet been enabled.
- Choose “Try Siri AI (Beta).” If Siri is off, turn Siri on first, then return to the Siri settings page and select the beta option.
- Complete the on-screen setup. Apple may guide you through voice enrollment, language confirmation, and a privacy review.
- Wait for activation. Apple says the process adds you to a waitlist and that waiting times vary. A compatible phone can therefore show the feature as pending rather than immediately active.
If the beta option is missing, check the model number, iOS version, Siri language, device language, and account region before assuming the phone is unsupported. Availability is controlled by more than the processor generation.

Where is Siri AI available?
Geographic availability is a separate requirement from hardware compatibility.
European Union
Apple says Siri AI is unavailable on iOS in the European Union. A supported iPhone in an EU country can therefore meet the hardware and software requirements while still lacking access because of regional availability.
Mainland China
Apple says Siri AI will not currently work when the Apple Account region is set to mainland China. This is an account-region restriction, not simply a question of which iPhone model is being used.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOther regions
Outside those stated restrictions, Apple still describes availability as varying by region and platform. Check Apple’s live support requirements before relying on a beta feature for work, accessibility, or travel.

Are all Siri features identical on compatible iPhones?
No. Apple’s general compatibility list and its advanced Siri feature list are not the same thing.
General Apple Intelligence and Siri AI eligibility
The broad list covers iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 models and later families named by Apple, and iPhone Air. This is the threshold to investigate for the new Siri AI experience, subject to iOS 27, language, region, and beta rollout.
Advanced model and expressive voices
Apple identifies a narrower set of devices for its AFM Core Advanced model and expressive voices: iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro models, and iPhone 18 Pro models. The existence of a compatible iPhone 15 Pro or standard iPhone 16 does not mean it receives these advanced voice capabilities.

When comparing phones, ask two separate questions: “Can this model run Apple Intelligence and Siri AI?” and “Does Apple list this model for the particular advanced voice feature I want?” A yes to the first does not imply a yes to the second.

How much storage does Apple Intelligence use?
Apple’s requirements page says Apple Intelligence models can require up to 8 GB of device storage on other supported iPhone models and up to 14 GB on selected newer high-memory devices. These are storage requirements for the on-device models, not a one-time universal charge, and Apple says the amount can change with software updates.
Before installing or enabling the features:
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and check available space.
- Remove or offload large downloads if the update or model installation cannot complete.
- Keep additional free space beyond the stated model requirement because iOS updates and temporary installation files also need room.
- Recheck storage after major updates; model requirements can change.
Some Apple Intelligence processing uses server models. Apple says those features can have daily usage limits that vary with the feature, request complexity, system demand, and policy. A usage limit is therefore not evidence that the iPhone is incompatible.
Why a compatible iPhone may not show Siri AI
Use this checklist in order:
- Confirm the exact model. In Settings > General > About, verify whether the phone is an iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, an eligible iPhone 16 model, a later listed family, or iPhone Air. A regular iPhone 15 or 15 Plus is not on Apple’s current list.
- Confirm iOS 27. A supported model on an older iOS release does not satisfy the current Siri AI requirement.
- Match languages. Check Settings > General > Language & Region and Settings > Siri. The device and Siri languages must match a supported language; Apple currently says Siri AI is available in English.
- Check location and account region. EU availability is blocked on iOS, and Apple says mainland-China Apple Account regions are currently excluded.
- Look for the beta enrollment step. In Settings > Siri, choose “Try Siri AI (Beta)” or enable Siri first if that option is not shown.
- Allow for the waitlist. Apple says activation can involve a wait and that waiting times vary.
- Free storage. Make enough room for the on-device models and the operating-system update.
If all checks pass and the feature remains unavailable, Apple’s live support page is the authority because beta eligibility, supported languages, and regional rules can change without a hardware change.
What should you buy if your iPhone is unsupported?
If your current phone is the regular iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, or another model outside Apple’s list, a compatible iPhone is required; no accessory or setting can add Apple Intelligence hardware support.
The least expensive route depends on the model and market available to you, but Apple’s documented compatibility makes an iPhone 16 model a straightforward starting point. The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are the earliest supported models, so they may also be relevant when buying used or refurbished, provided the device can run iOS 27 and the intended language and region are eligible.
Choose based on the feature you actually need. For general Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, start with the broad compatibility list. For AFM Core Advanced model support and expressive voices, restrict your shortlist to iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro models, and iPhone 18 Pro models as specified by Apple. Camera, display, battery, and price may influence the purchase, but they do not change Apple’s compatibility threshold.
What to verify before relying on the feature
- Your exact iPhone model appears on Apple’s current requirements page.
- The phone is running iOS 27.
- The device and Siri languages match, with English currently identified for Siri AI.
- Your location and Apple Account region are not subject to Apple’s stated restrictions.
- You have enough free storage for the applicable model download.
- You understand that Siri AI is a beta and that advanced voices have a higher device threshold.
- You have allowed for Apple’s activation waitlist if the option is available but not yet enabled.
Because Apple can change device lists, language support, regional availability, beta status, and feature limits, check the live Apple requirements immediately before purchasing a phone or planning around Siri AI.
