Short answer: it depends on how each game is delivered. A separately purchased download, a subscription entitlement, a game that needs publisher servers, and a cloud-streamed title are different rights and dependencies. A store can stop selling a game while your existing download remains available; a server closure can remove multiplayer but leave an offline campaign intact; and a subscription cancellation normally ends access to included games unless you bought them separately. Cloud-only games can become inaccessible when the provider’s platform closes.
Before a shutdown, identify the access model for every important game, check its offline and authentication requirements, read the provider’s notice for your country, and export saves only through supported tools. No general rule guarantees a refund, a save transfer, or permanent access.

Start with the access model, not the word “purchase”
The word “buy” can hide several different arrangements. Your outcome is determined by the game’s license, the account that grants it, the servers it needs, and the platform on which it runs.

A purchase usually gives you a license to use a particular digital product under the applicable store and publisher terms. It does not guarantee that every surrounding service will operate forever. Microsoft’s Gaming Web Purchase Service terms, for example, direct customers to the separate Microsoft or partner terms that govern each digital product and state that support comes from the party that owns that product. The storefront, publisher and platform may therefore be different parties with different responsibilities.

If the game can be downloaded again and activated offline, a store change may have little immediate effect. If the game checks an account or server each time it starts, a closure can still block play even though you paid for it.
Subscription entitlement
A subscription normally licenses access only while the subscription and the relevant catalog entry are active. Ubisoft’s Canadian Ubisoft+ terms say that when the current paid period ends, subscribers no longer have access to Ubisoft+ services, including included games and certain in-game purchases, unless they separately own the game. The catalog and benefits can vary by plan, platform, seller and region, and content can be added or removed.
Cloud-streamed game
With cloud gaming, the provider runs the game remotely and sends you video. Your device may contain no playable copy. If the streaming platform closes, loses a publisher agreement or removes a title, there may be nothing local to launch. A publisher account or a transferred save can help only if the publisher explicitly supports another way to play.

Online-dependent game
Some installed games still require a sign-in, license check, matchmaking service, or live game world. In those cases, storage on your console or PC does not recreate the missing service. Other games keep a complete offline mode and lose only network features.

Can you keep playing after a game’s servers shut down?
There is no universal answer. Read the title-specific notice and separate the game’s modes from its online services.
Offline campaign survives
PlayStation’s game-server notices give a clear example. After the online services for LittleBigPlanet 3 became unavailable, its offline campaign remained playable. A shutdown can therefore remove multiplayer, online levels or access to other players’ creations without deleting the local campaign.
Only online features disappear
Some games continue to launch but lose matchmaking, leaderboards, events, cloud-hosted user content or online progression. If a feature depends on a central database, an installed copy cannot restore it after that database is retired.

The whole game becomes unplayable
GUNS UP! is an example of the stricter outcome: PlayStation describes it as requiring an online connection, so it became unplayable when its online services ended. The same principle applies to games that perform mandatory authentication before the main menu.

Partial functionality can remain
Gran Turismo Sport retained offline portions, including purchased add-ons, after its online features ended. The practical question is not simply “Are the servers closed?” but “Which functions does this specific title require at launch and during play?”
A store closure is not the same as a game-server closure
A storefront controls sales and often download delivery; a game service controls features inside a title. They can close at different times.
PlayStation said that, after changes to PS3 and PS Vita store purchasing, players could continue using content they already owned, subject to each game’s online features and service availability. It also said previously purchased content would remain downloadable for the foreseeable future. That policy did not promise that every game server would continue, nor that every future device would remain compatible.

What happens when a subscription is cancelled or a title is removed?
At the end of a paid subscription period, access to subscription-only games normally ends. Installing the files does not convert the entitlement into ownership. If you later buy the same game separately, access may return, but that is a new license and can be platform-specific.
Catalog removal during an active subscription can have a similar effect. Ubisoft’s terms say Ubisoft may add or remove content and that benefits differ by plan, platform, seller and region. They also say Ubisoft may choose to retain progress or in-game purchases for a later renewal; preservation is discretionary, not a guaranteed backup.
The current Canadian Ubisoft+ terms consulted on October 13, 2026 provide for at least 30 days’ notice if Ubisoft terminates Ubisoft+ or a service. That notice period is a contract term for the specified region and service, not an industry-wide requirement. Check the terms that apply to your own country and billing route.

Google’s Stadia shutdown illustrates why service access, game licenses, saves and refunds must be considered separately. Google said it offered refunds for hardware bought through Google Store and for games and add-ons bought through Stadia Store. Stadia Pro subscriptions were generally not refundable under that FAQ, although eligible subscribers could continue accessing Pro games without further charges during the wind-down; charges from September 29, 2022 onward were refundable. Google said its store and platform commerce had closed and expected most transaction refunds to be processed by January 18, 2023, a historical forecast rather than a current deadline.
Some publishers supplied ways to transfer game data to other platforms. Google warned that a player might still need to purchase the game on the destination platform. In its own wording, “A number of game publishers are providing ways to transfer game data to other platforms, but you may have to purchase the game on another platform to play.” That arrangement was specific to Stadia and the participating publishers; it is not a promise for another closure.
Refunds, save transfers and replacement copies
Refunds
Refund eligibility depends on the provider, product, country, payment date and shutdown policy. A historical refund program proves only what that provider offered for that event. Look for a dedicated notice rather than assuming the normal cancellation policy has changed.
Save and account transfers
Progress may live in a platform account, a publisher account, a cloud save, or the provider’s private database. Export it only through an official feature. Confirm which account must be linked, which destination platforms are supported, whether all modes transfer, and whether transfer is one-time or reversible.
Buying the game again
A transferred save does not necessarily include a license. You may need to buy the game on the destination platform, and add-ons or virtual currency may not follow. Treat a save transfer and a game entitlement as separate checks.
What to do before a shutdown or major service change
- Inventory each title. Mark it as separately purchased, subscription-only, installed but online-dependent, or cloud-streamed. Record the platform, publisher account and region.
- Test offline launch. Disconnect the network after a normal sign-in and see whether the game reaches its campaign or local modes. Reconnect afterward so you do not trigger an avoidable activation problem. A successful test today is evidence, not a permanent guarantee.
- Read the title-specific notice. Note the shutdown date, timezone, affected modes, final date for downloads or purchases, and any required patch.
- Secure supported saves. Use the game’s export, cross-progression or platform-backup function. Keep more than one copy where the terms permit, and verify that a restore actually opens in the game.
- Check destination requirements. For a cloud closure, identify an eligible publisher account, supported platform and whether a separate purchase is required. Do not assume a compatible save means compatible ownership.
- Review money and account terms. Check refund windows, recurring-billing cancellation, account-closure rules and regional notices. Save confirmation emails and transaction records.
- Plan for hardware limits. A downloaded file or physical disc cannot recreate a discontinued server, authentication endpoint or cloud world. Keep compatible hardware only when the game’s offline requirements are documented.
Questions the license and region can change
Digital access is governed by the product license and local contract, not by a single global rule. The same title can have different catalog terms, notice periods, refund rights or download behavior in different countries. Subscription benefits can also differ by platform seller. Check the terms attached to the account that paid for the game and the notice issued for your region.
Microsoft’s terms make this division explicit: support for a digital product comes from the party that owns it. If a store, platform operator and publisher are separate, contact the party named in the product’s support or shutdown notice rather than assuming the storefront can restore a publisher service.
Common assumptions that fail
- “I paid, so every feature is permanent.” Payment does not guarantee continued servers, catalogs or compatibility.
- “The store closed, so every game disappeared.” Previously acquired downloads may remain available, while individual servers may close independently.
- “A disc or local files guarantee play.” They do not replace mandatory authentication or cloud-hosted functions.
- “My subscription save is automatically preserved.” A provider may retain progress at its discretion; export it while access exists.
- “A famous shutdown policy will be repeated.” Stadia’s refunds and transfer arrangements were event-specific and cannot be generalized.
A practical decision rule
Ask four questions in order: What exactly did I obtain? (a license, subscription entitlement or stream); Where does the game run? (locally or in the cloud); What does it contact? (optional multiplayer or mandatory authentication); and What does the current notice promise? The answers tell you whether to keep playing offline, buy a standalone copy, export a save, request a refund, or accept that the service cannot be recreated locally.
