Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) are benchmark prices, not two universal prices for every barrel of oil. Brent is the waterborne, North Sea-linked marker used broadly in international trade. WTI is the U.S. light, sweet crude marker priced at Cushing, Oklahoma. Their locations, transport options, representative quality and regional market exposure can move the two prices apart, so neither benchmark is permanently more expensive.
When a headline says “the oil price,” check which benchmark, location, contract or spot series, currency and date it means. That context is essential for interpreting the number.

What a crude-oil benchmark is
Crude oil varies by density, sulfur content, production basin and delivery point. Refineries and traders therefore use marker grades as reference points. A different crude is commonly priced at a premium or discount, called a differential, to one of those markers. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) says differentials reflect quality, including API gravity and sulfur, transportation costs, regional and global supply and demand, and refinery utilization. See the EIA explanation in “Benchmarks play an important role in pricing crude oil”.
A benchmark is consequently a pricing reference for a market, not a claim that every barrel has the same value. A cargo of heavy, high-sulfur crude can trade below a light, low-sulfur marker even when both are sold on the same day. Storage availability, pipeline capacity and the ability to move a cargo to another market also affect the differential.

Where Brent comes from and why it travels globally
North Sea origin and waterborne access
Brent is linked to crude produced in the North Sea. In an EIA explanation published in 2014, the benchmark was described as a blend of Brent and Forties streams from offshore areas of the United Kingdom and Ekofisk and Oseberg streams from offshore Norway. That is a dated description of the blend; it should not be read as a promise that today’s eligible-stream rules are frozen at those four names.
The important structural feature is that Brent is waterborne. Cargoes can move by tanker between producing areas, ports, storage sites and refineries. That access gives the benchmark a connection to international trade that an inland delivery point does not have. ICE describes Brent as a waterborne crude with access to global shipping, ports and storage.
International pricing role
The EIA identifies Brent as the most widely used global crude benchmark. It is used for crude traded in Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa, Australia and some Asian countries. ICE says Brent serves as a price barometer for about 80% of global crude. That percentage is ICE’s own published estimate, not an independently measured universal share, so it is best treated as an indication of the benchmark’s reach rather than a precise census.
Because Brent cargoes can be shipped, a disruption in one producing region can influence prices paid in distant markets. Freight rates, port access, tanker availability and the cost of moving a barrel to a refinery are therefore part of the economic setting around Brent.
Where WTI is priced and what Cushing means
Cushing, Oklahoma
WTI is U.S.-produced light, sweet crude priced at Cushing, Oklahoma. Cushing is an inland trading and storage hub connected to a network of pipelines. The quoted WTI price represents the value of crude available at that location, rather than the delivered price of every barrel produced in Texas or elsewhere in the United States.

Pipeline routes, storage capacity and local inventories can make the Cushing price differ from prices at a Gulf Coast terminal or at a refinery in another state. If production reaches Cushing faster than pipelines or storage can absorb it, the local marker can weaken. If supplies are tight or outbound routes are constrained in the opposite direction, the local price can strengthen relative to other markets.

U.S. reference function
The EIA describes WTI as a reference for other U.S. grades, including Mars and Bakken, and for some crude imported from Canada, Mexico and South America. Those grades do not become identical to WTI; they are priced with differentials that reflect their own quality and delivery economics.
Are Brent and WTI the same quality?
Both are generally described as light and sweet. “Light” refers to relatively low density, commonly expressed as API gravity. “Sweet” means relatively low sulfur. These characteristics usually make a crude attractive to many refineries, but they do not make the two streams interchangeable.
| Quality measure | Brent (CME representative figure) | WTI (CME representative figure) |
|---|---|---|
| API gravity | Not stated in the cited CME comparison | Just under 40 |
| Sulfur content | 0.40% | 0.24% |
| How to interpret the figures | Representative educational values, not a universal property of every stream or a replacement for a current contract specification | |
The sulfur difference is one reason quality differentials can exist between the markers. A refinery’s equipment and product slate determine how valuable a particular density and sulfur combination is. Transportation and regional supply conditions can outweigh a modest quality difference, so quality alone does not determine which benchmark is higher.
Why Brent and WTI prices diverge
A Brent quote and a WTI quote refer to different markets and delivery points. The main drivers can reinforce one another or pull in opposite directions.

| Driver | How it can affect the spread |
|---|---|
| Location | Brent reflects a North Sea, waterborne market; WTI reflects an inland Cushing market. Local shortages or surpluses can therefore affect one marker more strongly. |
| Transportation | Tankers, pipelines, port access and freight costs determine how easily barrels reach a refinery or another trading hub. |
| Storage and inventories | Available tanks and inventory levels influence the value of taking delivery at Cushing or in the waterborne Brent system. |
| Crude quality | API gravity and sulfur affect refinery economics and produce premiums or discounts for other grades. |
| Regional and global supply and demand | Production outages, export changes, seasonal demand and changing trade flows can affect the two regions differently. |
| Refinery utilization | When refineries run harder or cut operating rates, their demand for particular crude qualities and delivery locations changes. |
The EIA lists quality, transportation from production areas to refineries, regional and global supply and demand, and refinery utilization among the factors behind crude differentials. ICE’s description of Brent emphasizes its shipping, port and storage access. Together, these explanations show why there is no permanent formula that makes Brent dearer or WTI cheaper.

A dated example of the Brent–WTI spread
For the week ending October 2, 2026, the EIA’s weekly spot-price table reported:
- WTI at Cushing, Oklahoma: $98.07 per barrel.
- Brent in Europe: $120.03 per barrel.
Those observations put Brent $21.96 per barrel above WTI for that particular weekly average. The figures come from the EIA series “Spot Prices for Crude Oil and Petroleum Products”. EIA states that its weekly, monthly and annual values are unweighted averages of daily closing spot prices for the period. They are not live quotes, futures settlements or a rule about the normal ranking of the benchmarks.
A spread can narrow, disappear or reverse as inventories, transport routes, refinery demand, production and global flows change. Any article or broadcast that gives only one “oil price” without naming the marker and date is leaving out information needed to interpret it.

Spot series
A spot price describes a physical barrel for prompt delivery under the conventions of the quoted market. The EIA weekly numbers above are averages of daily closing spot prices. They are useful for tracking a historical series, but they should not be confused with a real-time trading quote.
Futures contracts
A futures price is the price at which a contract for a specified delivery month is traded. It includes market expectations, financing and storage economics, and the contract’s delivery terms. A futures quote can differ from a spot observation even when both use the same benchmark name.
ICE Brent Index
ICE says its Brent Index reflects the average price of trading in the prevailing North Sea cash or forward market for the relevant delivery month, as reported and confirmed by industry media. The methodology is described on the ICE Brent Index page. That index methodology is distinct from simply copying an EIA weekly spot average.

What “the oil price” means in news coverage
Use this checklist before comparing two numbers:
- Name the benchmark. Is it Brent, WTI or another regional marker?
- Identify the location label. “WTI–Cushing” and “Brent–Europe” describe different physical markets.
- Check the instrument. Is the number spot, a futures contract, a cash or forward assessment, or an index?
- Check the date and averaging period. A daily close, a weekly average and a delivery-month futures price are not interchangeable.
- Check the unit and currency. Both benchmarks are commonly quoted in U.S. dollars per barrel, but a report should state that explicitly.
- Look for the spread, not just one price. The difference between Brent and WTI often signals regional logistics and supply conditions.
For example, saying that Brent traded at $120.03 per barrel for the EIA week ending October 2, 2026 is precise. Saying “oil was $120” is ambiguous because it omits the benchmark, series and date.

Benchmark importance is not the same as the physical volume of crude in the blend. EIA reported average Brent crude loadings of 0.86 million barrels per day in 2013, compared with world crude production of 76 million barrels per day that year—about 1% of global production. Those are historical figures used to illustrate scale, not a current production estimate.
A benchmark can influence contracts around the world even when the physical stream behind it is a small share of total global output. Its usefulness comes from transparent trading, reliable delivery conventions and the willingness of producers, refiners and traders to use it for pricing.
Common misconceptions
“Brent is always more expensive.”
No. Brent was higher than WTI in the EIA week ending October 2, 2026, but the ranking changes with market conditions. A lasting premium is not built into the definition of either benchmark.
“WTI is the price of all U.S. oil.”
WTI is a U.S. marker at Cushing. Other U.S. grades, such as Mars and Bakken, can trade at premiums or discounts to it. Their prices also depend on where they are produced and delivered.

Both are generally light and sweet, although the representative sulfur and API figures cited by CME are not identical. Their market locations and logistics often matter as much as their physical characteristics.
Best Value
“The historical Brent blend description is a permanent recipe.”
The EIA’s four-stream description is from a 2014 explanation. Current eligible-stream rules can change, so detailed contract or delivery questions should be checked against the applicable ICE specifications rather than inferred from that historical summary.
“A benchmark quote tells me what a refinery pays.”
A refinery’s invoice can include a quality differential, freight, insurance, terminal fees, taxes and other commercial terms. A benchmark is the reference point from which those adjustments are negotiated, not necessarily the delivered cost.
Which benchmark should you follow?
For global or seaborne market news
Brent is usually the more relevant reference when a report concerns international cargoes, European or Mediterranean supply, seaborne exports, or markets that traditionally use the North Sea marker. Its waterborne structure makes shipping and port conditions especially relevant.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For U.S. production and inland logistics
WTI is generally the more direct reference for U.S. crude priced at Cushing and for domestic grades that use WTI differentials. Reports about Cushing inventories, U.S. pipeline capacity or inland production should be read with the WTI location in mind.
For comparing a company’s realized price
Ask which benchmark and delivery point the company uses, then add the stated differential and transport terms. A producer selling a coastal or heavy grade may not receive the headline WTI or Brent number even on the same day.
Bottom line
Brent is the broadly international, waterborne North Sea-linked benchmark; WTI is the U.S. light, sweet benchmark priced at inland Cushing. Both are reference markers whose prices reflect quality, transport, storage, supply and demand, and refinery conditions. Compare them only with the benchmark name, location, instrument and date attached—and treat the Brent–WTI spread as a changing market signal, not a permanent price hierarchy.
