Which iPhone Settings Should You Change First After Setup?

A practical first-setup checklist for Find My, iCloud, app access, location permissions, and tracking controls on iPhone.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by checking Find My, choosing what iCloud should sync, and reviewing which apps can access your information, location, and tracking data. These are choices—not a one-size-fits-all privacy preset: keep access that supports features you use, and change the rest deliberately.

1. Check Find My iPhone for device recovery

On most iPhones, open Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone and confirm it is enabled. Apple says Find My can help locate an iPhone if it is lost or stolen, making this a useful early recovery check. Menu wording or availability can vary by iOS version, device, and region. Apple’s iPhone iCloud guide

2. Choose what iCloud keeps in sync

Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud and review the feature switches. iCloud can keep supported information in sync and available if a device is replaced, lost, damaged, or stolen. Turn on the categories you want stored or synced; you do not need to enable every category. This is a continuity and convenience choice, separate from Find My’s role in locating a device. Apple’s iPhone iCloud guide

3. Review which apps can access personal information

Open Settings > Privacy & Security and inspect categories such as Contacts, Photos, Camera, and Microphone. An app generally appears under a data type after it has requested access. You can grant or revoke access later, so keep permissions that support features you want and remove access where there is no clear use. Apple’s privacy controls let you revisit decisions after an app’s initial prompt. Apple: Control access to information in apps

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

4. Set location access app by app

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. For each app, choose an available option such as Never, Ask Next Time or When I Share, While Using the App, or Always. An app may not offer every option. Apple says apps do not use your location until they ask for permission and you grant it. Apple: About privacy and Location Services

For apps that do not need an exact position, turn off Precise Location so they receive only an approximate location. Disabling Location Services altogether is also an option, but can limit features from Apple and third parties. A per-app review is more targeted if you want to preserve location-based features you rely on. Apple: About privacy and Location Services

5. Decide whether apps can ask to track you

Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking to review apps that have requested permission. You can turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track to stop future requests. Apple describes this control as applying to cross-company tracking across apps or websites for advertising or sharing information with data brokers. It is separate from location permission: changing one does not set the other. Apple: If an app asks to track your activity

Make choices by what you want the iPhone to do

These controls serve different purposes: Find My supports recovery, iCloud supports syncing and continuity, app permissions govern access to information or device features, Location Services govern location access, and Tracking governs cross-company tracking requests. Menu names, feature availability, and behavior can differ by iOS version and region; review the options shown on your iPhone rather than assuming every app or device presents identical choices.
