Use your own wall adapter and cable in a regular AC outlet, or charge from a trusted power bank. If you have to use the USB port, put a reputable data blocker or charge-only cable between it and your phone, and decline any unexpected request to share data or trust the connected device.
Is it safe to charge a phone from a public USB port?
It is generally safer to use your own AC adapter in a wall outlet or a trusted power bank. A USB connection can carry both power and data, so a public USB port may connect your phone to an unknown host rather than supplying electricity alone. USB Power Delivery can negotiate power while data remains part of the connection. USB-IF explains USB charging and Power Delivery.

That creates a possible route for a compromised station or cable to attempt data access or malware delivery. This is often called “juice jacking.” A technical paper demonstrated a proof-of-concept Android attack using a covert channel over a charging cable, controlled by an app already on the device; it shows possibility, not how often attacks happen today. The 2016 paper describes the prototype. The sources available do not establish a reliable current rate of real-world incidents, and plugging into a public port does not mean that a phone will automatically give up its photos, passwords, or other data.
Choose a charging method that avoids the unknown USB host
| Option | How it helps | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Your wall adapter and cable in an AC outlet | The phone connects to your adapter, not to a public USB host. | You need access to an outlet and your own compatible adapter and cable. |
| Trusted power bank | The phone draws power from a battery you control, rather than the public USB port. | It must be charged beforehand; use a bank and cable you trust and that suit your phone. |
| USB data blocker | Placed between the public port and the phone, it is intended to pass charging power while blocking USB data. Michigan’s consumer guidance explains data blockers. | Accessory quality and charging compatibility vary. Do not assume every model supports every fast-charging mode. |
| Charge-only cable | Its data wiring is omitted while power can still pass, according to the cable maker’s explanation. Plugable describes its charge-only USB-C cables. | Check connector fit and charging needs. The cited page describes specific USB-C products, not every cable or phone. |
| Public USB port with a standard cable | Convenient when no other power option is available. | The phone may connect to a data-capable host. Prefer a blocker or charge-only cable and refuse unexpected prompts. |
For a blocker or cable, consider whether it actually interrupts data, whether its connectors fit your devices, whether it supports the charging protocol you need, and whether the added convenience is worth any possible reduction in charging speed. What to do when only a public USB port is available
- Check for an AC outlet first. Connect your personal wall adapter to the outlet, then plug in your phone with a trusted cable.
- If there is no outlet, use a trusted power bank. A portable battery charger avoids connecting your phone to the public USB host, provided the bank was charged earlier and you trust the equipment.
- If you must use the USB port, block the data connection. Insert a reputable data blocker or use a charge-only cable between the port and your phone. A blocker is designed to pass power while interrupting data; confirm its compatibility rather than assuming all charging features will work.
- Read any prompt before responding. Choose “charge only” if offered. Decline requests to share data, enable file transfer, trust a computer, install an app or profile, or permit an unfamiliar accessory. If an unexpected prompt appears, disconnect.
- Bring your own equipment. Avoid a cable or power bank left unattended or handed out by someone you do not know.
Keep your phone’s operating system updated as a general security measure. Device prompts vary by model and software version, so do not rely on an old interface example as a guide to what your current phone will display. NIST’s mobile threat catalogue provides broader mobile-security context.

U.S. Army Cyber Command defines juice jacking as “a cyber attack in which a compromised Universal Serial Bus (USB) charging station transfers malware to, or steals personal information from, a connected device.” Its September 2022 fact sheet describes the threat, but neither that definition nor a lab demonstration measures how frequently it occurs. The sensible response is to avoid an unknown data connection when practical and use a blocker or charge-only cable if you cannot.
