For a practical balance of privacy and convenience, set notification previews to When Unlocked, remove sensitive or low-value apps from Lock Screen alerts, and review what your iPhone can show while locked. Then choose a notification layout you can scan easily. Always-On display and StandBy are optional: adjust them to suit your model and where you use your phone.
1. Hide notification previews until you unlock
Go to Settings > Notifications > Show Previews. Apple offers Always, When Unlocked, and Never. Previews can expose message text, lines from Mail, and Calendar invitation details, so this setting matters if your phone is visible to other people.
- When Unlocked: A useful privacy-oriented default if you still want to read the content after authenticating.
- Never: Choose this if you do not want preview content displayed, including after authentication.
- Always: Keep it only if seeing full alert content at a glance matters more than keeping it private from nearby people.
Some apps have their own preview controls. Check the settings for sensitive apps as well as the global option. Apple’s notification settings guide describes the available controls.
2. Decide which apps may alert on the Lock Screen
Go to Settings > Notifications, select an app, and review its alert options. Depending on the app, you may be able to turn alerts off or choose whether they appear on the Lock Screen, in Notification Center, or as banners. Sounds, badges, and notification types may also be configurable; the options depend on app support.
- Remove sensitive apps from the Lock Screen if their alerts reveal information you would rather keep private.
- Keep urgent alerts visible if seeing them promptly is important to you.
- Turn off low-value alerts that add clutter or interruptions.
There is no need to disable every app. Choose visibility app by app, based on the information an alert exposes and how quickly you need it.

3. Choose a notification layout and manage interruptions
In Settings > Notifications, choose how notifications are arranged on the Lock Screen. Apple documents three layouts:

| Count | Shows a count of notifications. | You want less visible clutter. |
| Stack | Groups notifications into a stack. | You prefer grouped alerts rather than a full list. |
| List | Shows notifications in a list. | You want to scan alerts individually. |
For fewer interruptions, use Scheduled Summary to batch selected notifications, or use Focus to delay delivery. 4. Review access and widgets while iPhone is locked
Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Allow Access When Locked. Review the available options and turn off locked-device access you do not need. Apple’s security guide notes that Lock Screen widget data access can be disabled here. The tradeoff is convenience: some features are quicker to reach when allowed before unlocking.

Check the widgets actually displayed on your Lock Screen, too. A widget may show glanceable information even when notification previews are hidden. When content is hidden to match your privacy settings, WidgetKit may show placeholders or redacted content until you authenticate. Apple’s Lock Screen security guide explains these controls.

5. Set Always-On display to match your privacy and habits
On supported models, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display. You can turn the feature off or, if it is on, choose whether wallpaper and notifications appear. Hide either if you want less visible information; keep them visible if glanceable information is more useful to you.
Availability depends on the iPhone model. Apple’s Always-On display guidance refers to supported models but does not provide an exhaustive compatibility list on that page. The display can also turn off in certain conditions, including when iPhone is face down or obstructed, when Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus is active, and at the usual bedtime.

6. Set up StandBy only if you want a charging display
StandBy is a separate, optional way to show information while iPhone is charging; it is not required for ordinary Lock Screen privacy changes. To set it up, go to Settings > StandBy and turn it on, connect iPhone to a charger, then place it stationary on its side. StandBy can display widgets, photos, or clocks, and its display behavior—including how long it takes to turn off—can be adjusted. Night Mode can use a red tint in low ambient light.

Make changes in the order that matters most
- Set Settings > Notifications > Show Previews to When Unlocked or Never.
- Review important or sensitive apps under Settings > Notifications and choose where their alerts appear.
- Select Count, Stack, or List, then consider Scheduled Summary or Focus if alert timing is the problem.
- Check Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Allow Access When Locked and inspect your actual Lock Screen widgets.
- Adjust Always-On display or StandBy only if your model supports the option and you want those features.
If a menu or label is missing, check which iOS version is installed; labels and availability can vary by software release and device.
