Start with focus and exposure, then choose photo and video formats for how you plan to use them. Menus and features vary by iPhone model and iOS version, so use the options available on your device.
Which settings should you change first?
For most everyday shots, leave the camera’s automatic settings in place and adjust only when the scene calls for it. Apple says iPhone normally sets focus and exposure automatically. Tap your subject to focus; if the image looks too bright or dark, use the on-screen exposure control to adjust brightness. These controls address focus and brightness for the shot—they do not guarantee a sharper image or correct poor composition. Apple’s iPhone camera guide explains the controls.

- Tap to focus: Tap the part of the scene you want in focus.
- Adjust exposure: Drag the exposure control up or down to brighten or darken the image.
- Lock focus and exposure: Touch and hold the focus area to activate AE/AF Lock when you want those choices held for a shot. This is useful when framing a scene where automatic adjustments might shift as you recompose.
Exposure is scene-specific: a brighter setting may help a dark subject but can wash out bright areas. Check the image on screen rather than leaving one adjustment in place for every situation.

Higher-resolution and RAW-style capture can retain more image information, but they use more storage. For routine photos, a supported 12 MP or 24 MP default is a practical choice; use 48 MP capture or ProRAW when you have a specific need for extra detail or editing flexibility and are comfortable with larger files. The available choices depend on your iPhone.

On supported models, look under Settings > Camera > Formats for Photo Mode and, depending on the phone, Resolution Control or ProRAW & Resolution Control. Apple describes ProRAW as combining standard RAW information with iPhone image processing. It offers more flexibility when editing, but it is not a required everyday setting and cannot fix composition or guarantee a better-looking automatic result. Two other format options are about workflow rather than resolution. Prioritize Faster Shooting affects processing to allow more photos when you tap the shutter rapidly; Lens Correction applies to front-camera or Ultra Wide photos on supported devices. If you value rapid bursts or those lenses’ results, check whether the options are available in your camera settings rather than assuming every iPhone offers them.

What video resolution and frame rate should you use?
Choose video resolution for the level of detail you need and frame rate for the way motion should look. Higher resolutions and faster frame rates create larger video files, according to Apple’s video guide. Supported models offer differing combinations of HD or 4K and frame rates such as 24, 25, 30, 60, or 120 fps; your iPhone may not offer all of them.

Change the format or frame rate in the Camera app where available, or set supported defaults at Settings > Camera > Record Video. For Auto FPS, supported models can apply it to 30 fps video, to both 30 and 60 fps, or turn it off; the exact choices vary. Auto Low Light FPS is another control on supported devices. A reduced frame rate may help in a dim scene, but it changes motion rendering. Try the setting in the lighting and movement you expect to record.

When stabilization matters more than detail
If you are recording while moving, Action mode is designed to provide improved stabilization on supported iPhones. It is a purposeful choice for movement, not a universal upgrade for every clip. Check your device’s Camera app for availability and compare the result in the scene you need to capture.
For time-lapse, Apple recommends placing the iPhone on a stable surface or tripod. A tripod is optional, but it can keep framing steady over a long recording.

When should you save settings between sessions?
If you repeatedly change a control and find it resets when you reopen Camera, use Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings to keep selected choices. Apple lists settings including Camera Mode, Photographic Style, Creative Controls, Depth Control, Macro Control, Exposure Adjustment, Night Mode, Portrait Zoom, Action Mode, ProRAW & Resolution Control, Apple ProRes, and Live Photo; availability varies by model. Enable only the settings you want to carry forward. Preserving a mode or adjustment is convenient for a repeated workflow, but it can leave Camera opening with a choice you do not want for an unrelated shot. Preserve the controls you routinely set yourself; leave the rest to reset or choose them as needed.

Why does the camera switch lenses for close-ups?
On supported iPhones, Camera automatically switches to the Ultra Wide camera for macro close-ups. Apple says the phone can focus as close as 2 centimeters. If the subject looks blurry, back the phone away or tap 0.5x to switch to Ultra Wide. Macro Control, including the option to preserve that setting, is model-dependent. Apple’s instructions are in its macro photo and video guide.

- Choose a supported photo resolution that fits your storage and detail needs; reserve 48 MP or ProRAW for shots that benefit from them.
- Set video resolution and frame rate for the intended clip, keeping file size and low-light conditions in mind.
- Try Auto FPS for supported low-light recording or Action mode when stabilization during movement is the priority.
- Preserve only the settings you regularly change, and check your own Camera menus because availability differs by model and iOS version.
