Before recording, match your iPhone’s resolution and frame rate to the finished video, decide whether the project should be HDR or SDR, and lock framing and white balance if consistency matters. Then check stabilization, low-light frame-rate behavior, sound, and storage. There is no one best preset: available controls and recording formats depend on the iPhone model and iOS version.
Start with the settings that affect every take
Check these options before the first shot. Menu labels and availability vary by iPhone model and software version, so use the settings your device actually offers rather than assuming every control is universal.

1. Match resolution and frame rate to delivery
In the Camera app, open Video mode and use the on-screen resolution and frame-rate controls to choose a supported recording mode. Apple documents HD and 4K, with rates that can include 24, 25, 30, 60, and 120 frames per second; PAL options are available on some models. The exact choices depend on the iPhone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Choose the frame rate your project needs. Use a higher rate for motion that calls for it or for footage intended to be slowed down; it is not automatically the best choice for every clip.
- Choose resolution for the intended delivery and level of detail, bearing in mind that higher resolutions and faster frame rates create larger files.
- Check the setting again when changing modes or starting a new project, especially if footage must match an existing edit.
Apple notes that “Faster frame rates and higher resolutions result in larger video files.” See Apple’s iPhone video recording guide for the model-dependent options.

2. Choose HDR or SDR for the whole workflow
HDR is a workflow choice, not a universal quality ranking. Supported iPhones can record HDR; Apple says compatible Apple devices and software receive HDR video, while other devices receive an SDR version. If you are editing and delivering in an SDR workflow, or want predictable broad compatibility, turn HDR off in the Camera settings. If the project is intended for HDR, leave it on only when the editing and playback path supports that choice.
Decide before recording: changing formats between clips can complicate editing and make footage behave differently across destinations. Apple’s iPhone video settings guide describes HDR behavior and model-dependent controls.
3. Lock the camera to prevent a lens change
On supported models, Lock Camera prevents the iPhone from switching cameras while recording. Turn it on in Settings > Camera > Record Video when a take needs an uninterrupted, consistent angle of view. It is off by default in Apple’s documented settings. This controls camera switching; it does not lock exposure or color.

4. Lock white balance to prevent color shifts
On supported models, enable Lock White Balance in Settings > Camera > Record Video when you want color to stay consistent during a take. Apple describes the control as locking white balance during recording to improve accurate color capture based on the lighting. Check the scene’s lighting before you lock it. If the lighting changes substantially, make a deliberate adjustment or start a new take rather than letting a long shot drift between different color conditions.
Lock Camera and Lock White Balance solve different problems: one helps prevent a change in framing, the other a change in color.
5. Balance stabilization against a tighter frame
On supported models, Enhanced Stabilization is enabled by default and slightly zooms in to improve stabilization. It can help with handheld Video or Cinematic footage, but the crop narrows the field of view. Check the edges of the frame if you are close to a subject or need to preserve a wide composition.

Action mode is a separate option on supported iPhones. Apple says it works best in bright light and tops out at 2.8K. Choose it when its stabilization is useful and that resolution limit suits the delivery; do not assume it is interchangeable with ordinary Video mode. See Apple’s video settings guide and recording modes guide for model-specific details.

Apple says iPhone may automatically reduce the frame rate to 24 fps in low light to improve video. If a consistent frame rate matters for motion, synchronization, or editing, review Auto FPS or Auto Low Light FPS under Settings > Camera > Record Video, if your model offers it. Menu choices vary by device. A fixed rate may be preferable for consistency, while automatic reduction is a tradeoff intended to help in dim conditions.
7. Set sound recording deliberately
Sound mode is also model-dependent. Apple’s current guide says iPhone 16 and later record Spatial Audio by default and allow a choice of Spatial Audio, Stereo, or Mono; other audio options vary by model. For an interview or talking-head shot, choose a mode that suits the intended playback and monitor the recorded sound. The setting does not replace checking for room noise or a usable microphone signal.

When should you use ProRes?
ProRes is optional, not a requirement for professional-looking iPhone video. Apple describes it as offering higher color fidelity and less compression than more efficient formats, but with substantially larger files. It is most useful when the editing workflow benefits from that format and you have a plan for the resulting storage and transfer load. For routine capture or a storage-constrained shoot, a more efficient format may be more practical.
Enable it and check mode limits
- Open Settings > Camera > Formats and enable ProRes, if your iPhone supports it.
- Open Video mode and select ProRes plus an available resolution and frame rate.
- Confirm the selected mode before recording; ProRes is not supported in Cinematic, Time-lapse, or Slo-Mo mode.
Apple states that ProRes is available on all cameras, including the front camera, on supported iPhones. Its ProRes recording guide lists the mode and device limitations.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Make a storage plan before the shoot
Apple says ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC files and requires at least 10 percent of device storage to be free to record ProRes. The 30-times figure is an upper bound, not a prediction for every clip. Check available space before recording and allow for transfers and editing copies.

Supported iPhone Pro models can record ProRes to USB-C external storage. Some high-resolution combinations have specific drive-speed and maximum-power requirements. Check Apple’s current requirements for the exact iPhone and recording mode before relying on an external drive; a compatible external SSD for iPhone ProRes must meet the requirements for that setup. Apple’s ProRes storage article gives the file-size, free-space, and external-drive guidance.
When is a manual-control app worth using?
The built-in Camera app is the simpler choice when its available controls meet the shot’s needs. Apple’s Final Cut Camera documentation describes additional controls for codec, resolution, frame rate, color space, ISO, white balance, and shutter speed, with supported choices varying by device. Consider it when you need deliberate manual capture settings rather than the built-in app’s more limited controls. See Apple’s Final Cut Camera control guide for supported options.
Quick Recap
Final pre-record checklist
- Confirm resolution and frame rate match the project and are supported by this iPhone.
- Choose HDR or SDR based on the edit and playback destinations.
- Enable Lock Camera if an in-take camera switch would spoil the framing.
- Enable Lock White Balance if consistent color matters, after checking the light.
- Check stabilization and framing; Enhanced Stabilization crops slightly, while Action mode has model and resolution limits.
- Review Auto FPS if a stable frame rate matters in low light.
- Choose the sound recording mode and monitor audio.
- If recording ProRes, confirm mode compatibility, free space, and any external-drive requirements.
