The settings most relevant to iPhone call sound are Phone Noise Cancellation (on iPhone 12 and earlier), Mono Audio, Balance, and Headphone Accommodations when you are using compatible headphones. They do different jobs: none is a general call-volume boost. If a call is not coming through the built-in earpiece, check the selected audio output first.
Which settings affect which listening route?

Find the relevant settings
Check Mono Audio, Balance, and Phone Noise Cancellation
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual.
- Check Mono Audio if you are investigating how left and right channels are combined. If stereo audio seems uneven, move Balance to the center.
- On iPhone 12 and earlier, check Phone Noise Cancellation. Apple says it is on by default and can be turned off. It is not a volume slider, and the setting is not available on newer iPhone models.
Apple describes Mono Audio and Balance as channel controls, not as ways to raise built-in earpiece call volume. Apple’s Audio & Visual accessibility settings guide explains these controls and Phone Noise Cancellation.

Apply Headphone Accommodations to calls
- Pair the supported Apple or Beats headphones you plan to use.
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations.
- Enable Headphone Accommodations, then turn on Phone to apply its tuning to calls. Apple recommends configuring the feature with the headphones paired and in a quiet environment.
The separate Media control applies the accommodations to media. This feature concerns headphone listening; it does not establish that the built-in receiver is being adjusted. See Apple’s Headphone Accommodations guide for compatible headphones and setup details.

If a call is not coming through the earpiece
Check the call’s selected audio output before concluding the receiver is faulty. A call can be routed to the iPhone speaker, a Bluetooth headset, or a hearing device. Select the intended route in the call’s audio-output controls. Apple documents these options in its guide to choosing how to hear and respond to calls on iPhone.

What to expect from these controls
- For a noisy environment with the phone at your ear: Phone Noise Cancellation is the control Apple specifically associates with receiver listening, but only on iPhone 12 and earlier.
- For uneven stereo sound: Mono Audio and Balance change channel presentation; neither is documented as a general call-volume boost.
- For calls through compatible headphones: Headphone Accommodations can tune the sound when its Phone option is enabled.
- For a silent earpiece during a call: Confirm the call is routed to the receiver rather than a speaker, headset, or hearing device.
