How to Fix Crackling or Popping Audio on an iPhone

Find the source of crackling iPhone audio, try the right speaker, call, or headphone checks, and know when to arrange service.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First identify whether the crackling or popping happens through the iPhone’s built-in speaker, during calls, or only with headphones. Each pattern points to different checks. For speaker audio, rule out Silent mode, Do Not Disturb, and blocked or dirty openings; for call-only noise, test again elsewhere; for headphone-only noise, inspect the accessory and connection. If the problem persists, arrange service.

Find out where the crackling happens

Compare the same or similar audio through the built-in speaker, a phone call on speakerphone, and headphones if available. Note whether the noise affects one app, all playback, calls only, or one accessory. This helps narrow down which checks to try first; it does not identify a failed component by itself.

What you hear Check first What Apple’s guidance says
Ringtones, media, or other built-in speaker audio sounds distorted Check settings and inspect the speaker and receiver openings. Apple recommends checking for obstruction, testing the Ringtone and Alerts slider, and seeking service if the issue persists. Apple speaker troubleshooting.
Static or crackling during calls, but other audio is normal Try a call later or from another location. Network or reception could be responsible; this is a possibility, not a diagnosis. Apple speaker troubleshooting.
Crackling only through headphones Check the accessory, its connection, and its openings. Apple provides a separate headphone checklist. Apple headphone troubleshooting.
The noise continues after the relevant checks Contact Apple or an Apple-certified service provider. Persistent sound problems may need service. Apple speaker troubleshooting.

Check the iPhone’s built-in speaker and receiver

  1. Turn off Silent mode and Do Not Disturb. Then test the sound again.
  2. Remove anything that could cover an opening. Take off the case, film, or screen protector temporarily and check the speaker opening and the receiver at the top of the iPhone.
  3. Inspect for visible dirt. If an opening appears dirty, Apple’s instruction is: “If necessary, clean the speaker or receiver opening with a small, soft-bristled brush. Make sure the brush is clean and dry.” Use a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush; do not put liquid or sharp objects into the openings.
  4. Test the alert sound. Open Settings and select Sounds or Sounds & Haptics, depending on the iOS version. Move the Ringtone and Alerts slider back and forth and listen for distortion.

If there is no sound from the speaker or the speaker button is dimmed, Apple says the speaker may need service. Cleaning can address visible debris, but it does not establish that dirt is the cause of every distorted sound.

If crackling happens only during phone calls

Place another call later or from a different location. Apple notes that network or reception issues could cause static or crackling during calls. If calls remain noisy in different places while other iPhone audio sounds normal, contact your carrier or Apple for help narrowing down the cause; the symptom alone does not prove the speaker is damaged.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

If crackling happens only with headphones

  • Check the port, cable, connector, remote, and earbud meshes for debris or damage.
  • Reconnect the headphones firmly. Remove the case if it prevents a secure connection.
  • Make sure iOS is current and restart the iPhone.

Apple’s headphone troubleshooting checklist is available at its sound-quality support page. If possible, test with another compatible pair to see whether the noise follows the headphones or remains with the iPhone.

When to update, restart, or seek service

Apple’s iPhone support overview notes that an iOS update might fix an issue. Updating or restarting is a general troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed audio repair. For a frozen iPhone, Apple’s force-restart sequence is to press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the iPhone begins to restart.
