1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a wireless gaming mouse by starting with fit, then checking its performance in the connection mode you will actually use. Polling rate is only one part of responsiveness: a higher number shortens the interval between reports, but does not describe total click-to-screen latency and can increase power use or cause problems in some games.
1. Start with shape, hand size and grip
Palm, claw and fingertip describe how your hand contacts a mouse; none is universally best. Logitech’s grip guidance recommends using hand size and grip to inform shape choice. Treat grip labels as a starting point, not a substitute for checking the actual shell.

- Palm: More of the hand rests on the mouse. Check where the shell’s hump supports your palm and whether your fingers reach the buttons comfortably.
- Claw: The palm is less settled and the fingers are more arched. Check that the button reach feels natural without forcing your fingers into position.
- Fingertip: The mouse is guided mainly by the fingers. A compact, low-profile or lighter design may be worth trying, but the fit depends on your hand and preferences.
Before choosing, check that your thumb rests comfortably, the hump meets your hand where you expect, and you can lift and reposition the mouse without awkward strain. If possible, try it through a longer session: comfort can be hard to judge from a grip label or product photo alone. Shape and weight both affect handling, so neither should be assessed in isolation.
2. Understand what polling rate does—and does not—measure
Polling rate is how often a mouse reports its position to the computer. It is not DPI: DPI describes how cursor movement relates to physical movement. Logitech explains the distinction in its polling-rate guide.

| Polling rate | Nominal interval between reports |
|---|---|
| 500 Hz | 2 ms |
| 1000 Hz | 1 ms |
| 2000 Hz | 0.5 ms |
| 4000 Hz | 0.25 ms |
| 8000 Hz | 0.125 ms |
The intervals are calculated as 1000 divided by the polling rate in hertz. They are reporting intervals—not measurements of the complete time from clicking to seeing the result on screen. Total response also involves switch actuation, the mouse and connection, the computer, the game and the display. A latency result is meaningful only with its test boundary and method attached.
For example, Razer reports an average of 0.291 ms for its HyperSpeed Wireless Gen-2 8000 Hz comparison. Razer defines its controlled test boundary as the time from electrical switch actuation until a frame is received or reflected at the host. That is a vendor-specific result and method, not a general latency figure for all wireless mice or systems. See Razer’s HyperPolling information.

3. Decide whether a high polling rate is worth it
More reports per second may reduce the wait for the next report, but a higher polling rate is not an automatic upgrade. Logitech’s guidance labels 500 Hz suitable for serious gaming, 1000 Hz for competitive gaming, and rates above 1000 Hz for professional esports or niche scenarios. Logitech also cautions that above 1000 Hz the practical difference may be minimal in typical use while power consumption rises. Those are Logitech’s recommendations, not a universal threshold established for every player or game.
Compatibility is another consideration. Razer warns that some older game engines may not handle high-polling devices well. If a game stutters or disconnects, Razer recommends trying 4000 Hz or 2000 Hz instead; for its HyperPolling setup it also advises placing the wireless dongle within 30 cm and in line of sight. These are Razer-specific troubleshooting instructions, not requirements for every mouse.

If your mouse offers higher rates, test them in the games and on the PC you use. Compare how it feels and whether play remains stable, rather than assuming the largest advertised number will improve every setup.
4. Choose the connection mode for gaming
For gaming, a dedicated USB receiver is generally the better starting point than Bluetooth. RTINGS recommends a dedicated receiver, describing Bluetooth as higher-latency and less reliable for gaming. Its buying guide, updated September 29, 2026, says it buys products and uses a standardized test bench, including tools to isolate device-side click and sensor latency.

Connection mode can change what a mouse supports. A multi-mode model may offer its highest polling rate only over its receiver or wired connection, so check the specification for the exact mode you plan to use. Also verify whether the necessary receiver or high-rate dongle is included, and whether you can position it close to the mouse. If Bluetooth or wired operation matters as a fallback, confirm that the mouse supports it rather than inferring support from the presence of wireless connectivity.

5. Compare battery life in the mode you will use
Battery-life claims are model-specific estimates, not directly comparable results unless the test conditions match. Polling rate and other settings affect consumption, so read the stated runtime alongside the connection mode and configuration. Also check the charging method and whether the mouse can remain in use while charging.

| Example model | Manufacturer-listed connections and polling | Manufacturer-listed battery or charging detail |
|---|---|---|
| MSI VERSA PRO Wireless | 1000 Hz; 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth 5.3 and USB | Up to 80 hours; MSI says play can continue while charging |
| Razer Basilisk V3 Pro 35K | 8000 Hz operation requires a separately sold Mouse Dock Pro or HyperPolling Wireless Dongle | Up to 140 hours on HyperSpeed Wireless |
These are the manufacturers’ specifications for two different products, not results measured under identical conditions. See MSI’s VERSA PRO Wireless specifications and Razer’s Basilisk V3 Pro 35K product page. The Razer page identifies the accessory required for 8000 Hz operation; factor that into capability and setup comparisons.
6. Use a practical checklist to compare candidates
Once a mouse seems to fit, compare candidates using the same intended connection mode and settings. Keep measured results separate from manufacturer claims, and retain the stated test method when comparing latency figures.
- Fit: shell dimensions and shape against your hand size and natural grip; button reach; thumb comfort; and ease of lifting and repositioning.
- Handling: weight and how it feels during the movements you make in games.
- Performance: measured click latency, sensor latency and tracking quality, with each result’s methodology.
- Connection: polling rates by wired, receiver or Bluetooth mode; receiver inclusion and placement; and any wired or Bluetooth fallback you need.
- Power and controls: battery estimate for your chosen mode and settings, charging method, use while charging, button count and layout.
- Cost: current price for the exact model and any required receiver, dock or other accessory.
Do not rank latency figures as though they share a common scale when one measures device-side response and another uses a different boundary. RTINGS describes using a USB analyzer for device-side click and sensor latency; vendor figures may measure something else. Compare methods first, then decide which evidence is relevant to your use.
