Compare personal fit, timing, platform condition, price history, and the seller’s refund rules. If you are unsure and have no reason to start immediately, waiting is a sensible choice; no one can promise when a sale will come.
Start with whether the game suits you
Consider the experience you actually want: genre, mechanics, story, challenge, or playing with friends. A highly rated game can still be poor value if it is not your kind of game. Interest based mainly on hype is a reason to pause; a close match for what you want is a stronger case for buying.

Decide whether playing now matters
Set a discretionary budget and ask whether the purchase would crowd out something more important. Then identify any concrete reason to play at launch, such as joining friends or avoiding spoilers. If you are eager to play now and the price fits your budget, the current listed price may be acceptable. If there is no urgency, waiting costs you little beyond time.

Main-story length, optional content, replayability, and multiplayer longevity can help you estimate how much you might play. They are different kinds of use, though: a long game is not automatically more enjoyable, and a short game is not automatically poor value. There is no universal, evidence-based dollars-per-hour threshold that determines whether every game is worth its price. Use likely enjoyment and use as context, not a pass-or-fail calculation.

Check reception and technical condition for your platform
Look at reviews for the platform you plan to use and pay attention to recent player feedback about performance, bugs, or unresolved issues. Steam’s User Reviews documentation explains that its store page displays review aggregates for both the recent 30-day period and the lifetime of a game. These figures answer different questions: recent reviews can reflect the current experience, while lifetime reviews cover a longer span. Neither tells you whether the game matches your preferences or guarantees how it will run on your system.
Put today’s price in context
Compare the exact platform, region, edition, and seller before judging a price. IsThereAnyDeal’s API documentation describes price overviews, historical lows, and price histories, with country and shop parameters. Price history can show whether today’s offer is high or low relative to past prices; it cannot predict if or when another discount will happen. If the current price is well above a past low and you are not in a hurry, waiting may make sense. A past low is context, not a promised future price.

Check the actual refund policy before paying
Refund rules differ by storefront, purchase type, time, playtime, region, and applicable law. Treat a refund as a limited safety net, not as a trial period you can count on. Read the current terms for the seller and your transaction before buying.
Steam
Valve says it will, on request, refund a game requested within 14 days of purchase if it has been played for less than two hours, including online, offline, and shared-library playtime. Valve also says requests outside those stated rules may be submitted for review. See Steam’s Common Refund Questions. For pre-orders, Steam says they can be refunded any time before release; after release, the stated standard is within two weeks of release and under two hours of playtime. Check Steam’s pre-order refund terms for your situation.

Epic Games Store
Epic says paid games are generally self-refundable or refundable when eligible. Its policy also says an eligible recent purchase that goes on sale can be refunded and repurchased at the sale price. Eligibility conditions apply, so this does not mean every purchase qualifies. Read the Epic Games Store Refund Policy.
Microsoft Store
Microsoft’s support guidance says digital goods, including games, are not refundable unless the offer or applicable law makes the purchase eligible. This guidance concerns Microsoft Store purchases; it should not be assumed to apply to other retailers or jurisdictions. See Microsoft’s refund guidance.

A practical decision
- Confirm fit: name what you want from the game and check that it offers that experience.
- Check urgency and budget: decide whether playing now matters and whether the price is affordable without displacing a higher priority.
- Review current evidence: check recent platform-specific reception and technical reports, not just lifetime scores.
- Compare the price: verify the edition, region, platform, and seller, then use price history as context rather than a forecast.
- Read the refund terms: confirm the rules for that seller and purchase before relying on any safety net.
- Choose deliberately: buy if fit, affordability, and timing all work for you; wait if interest, condition, price, or budget is still a concern.
