As of October 4, 2026, Apple has announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, but the standard iPhone 18 is not confirmed in the official sources reviewed here. Among the announced U.S. models, choose the Pro to spend $100 less at entry while getting the new Pro camera features; choose Pro Max if you prioritize Apple’s larger-battery positioning and prefer a larger viewing area. If you specifically want the standard iPhone 18, wait for Apple to confirm its specifications and price rather than deciding from rumors.
Which iPhone 18 models can you buy now?
Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026. Apple said preorders would begin September 12, with availability starting September 18 in more than 65 countries and regions; a further 20 countries and regions were scheduled to get the phones from September 25.

The standard iPhone 18 is not established in the official sources reviewed for this article. MacRumors reported on August 28, 2026, that it was expected in spring 2027, but that timing is a report, not an Apple-confirmed release date. Its price and specifications are likewise unconfirmed here.

Prices are U.S. launch starting prices, not universal or necessarily current transaction prices. Prices, promotions, and availability can differ by market and change over time. Apple lists four storage tiers for each model; choose capacity based on the photo, video, app, and offline-media library you expect to keep on the phone.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Choose iPhone 18 Pro if you want the lower-cost announced Pro
The Pro is the sensible pick if you want the announced Pro-line camera capabilities and would rather keep the additional $100 than pay the Pro Max entry price. Apple says the new 48MP Fusion Main camera has variable aperture, a first for iPhone, and presents it as a way to gain more creative control. That may matter to someone who actively adjusts how they shoot; it is not a reason every buyer needs to upgrade.
Apple Support lists the Pro display as 6.27 inches when measured as a standard rectangle, with less viewable area in practice. Consider whether that viewing area suits your reading and video habits, and whether the phone’s overall size fits your handling preferences. This is a decision criterion, not a claim based on hands-on comfort testing.

Choose iPhone 18 Pro Max if battery positioning and a larger view matter more
The Pro Max costs $100 more at the U.S. starting price. Apple positions it as delivering the largest increase in battery life ever on iPhone, making it the clearer choice if its battery emphasis is worth the added cost to you. This is Apple’s claim, not an independent battery-test result; actual endurance depends on how a phone is used.
A larger model can also suit people who value more screen area for video, reading, or other viewing. Before choosing it, weigh that preference against whether a larger phone is comfortable for your own handling and carrying needs. The Apple Support specification excerpt available here does not provide a verified Pro Max screen measurement, so it does not support a precise diagonal comparison.

Should you wait for the standard iPhone 18?
Wait if the standard model is the one you actually want and you can put off buying a phone. Apple has not confirmed its final features, price, or timing in the official sources reviewed here. The spring 2027 timing reported by MacRumors on August 28, 2026, is an expectation, not a confirmed date; rumored chip, memory, display, and camera details should not be treated as settled.
Once Apple publishes the standard model’s price and specifications, compare those with the Pro models available then. If you need a phone before that announcement, the confirmed choice in this comparison is between Pro and Pro Max.

What else to check before ordering
- Storage: Both announced models start at 256GB and are also listed at 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. Compare the cost of the capacity you actually need, rather than only the entry price.
- Local configuration: Apple designates eSIM-only versions for certain countries. Confirm the version sold in your market and that your carrier supports it.
- Features by region and language: Apple says Apple Intelligence availability can vary by language and region. Its September 9 announcement said iOS 27 would be available September 14, 2026, and that Apple Intelligence with iOS 27 would be available to supported-language users with an eligible device. Check current regional support before buying for a particular feature.
- Offers and trade-in: Apple describes trade-in and carrier credits whose eligibility and value depend on device, carrier, condition, and location. Verify current terms for your situation rather than assuming a quoted credit applies.
