Buy a graphics card only after you have checked the exact listing, seller, return terms, payment route, and claim deadline—and keep every part of the transaction on the marketplace. A listing hosted by a marketplace does not necessarily mean the marketplace is the seller, and protection depends on the site’s current policy, the specific item and seller, your location, and how you pay.
Before you pay, verify the listing and the seller
Start with the exact GPU model and board-partner variant, not just the product family. Compare listings on condition, included accessories, shipping cost, return terms, and seller history. A low price can be a warning sign, but price alone does not establish that a listing is fraudulent. The Federal Trade Commission recommends checking the seller’s rules, available help, and payment methods before buying from an online marketplace (FTC: Buying From an Online Marketplace).

Make sure the photos and description refer to the actual card
- Look for several clear photos of the item from different angles. Stock images alone do not show the condition of the card or establish that the seller has it.
- Read the condition and included-items details carefully. Check for disclosures about missing parts, damage, repairs, or functional problems.
- Compare the stated model and variant with the photos and description. If the listing is unclear, ask before paying rather than assuming a part or accessory is included.
Check the seller’s recent history and get answers in writing
Read recent feedback and look at the seller’s history; a star rating by itself may not tell you whether this seller has handled similar items reliably. Ask specific questions about operation, damage, repairs, included parts, and returns. Keep the questions and answers in the marketplace’s messaging system so they remain part of the transaction record.

Check the protection and deadline for this specific purchase
Marketplaces do not all handle returns, delivery problems, refunds, or disputes the same way. The FTC advises buyers to check whether a protection applies to the particular item and seller, who can help if there is a problem, and how soon a claim must be filed. Read the return and claim rules before checkout, and note the deadline and the correct dispute route for the listing, marketplace site, and country.
As the FTC puts it: “Before you buy from any online marketplace, check the seller’s rules about refunds and returns, see who can help if you have a problem, and make sure they let you pay with a safe payment method.” (Federal Trade Commission, November 2024.)

On Amazon, distinguish the seller from the fulfiller
Amazon’s “Sold by” and “Ships from” labels identify who sells an item and who fulfills the shipment. A third-party seller can sell a card that Amazon ships; fulfillment by Amazon does not, by itself, establish the seller’s identity or the card’s condition. Amazon says buyers may be eligible for an A-to-z claim when an order has a problem, subject to the applicable terms (Amazon: Ordering from a Third-Party Seller; Amazon Payments: A-to-z Guarantee Protection for Buyers).
The A-to-z terms include conditions and deadlines. For a received item that is damaged, defective, or materially different from its description, the policy states a 14-day period to contact the seller. Check the current policy and dates for your transaction, and follow its stated process rather than assuming that Amazon fulfillment guarantees a particular outcome.

On eBay, keep the purchase on eBay
Keep messages and payment on eBay. eBay says purchases made off eBay are not covered by its Money Back Guarantee. Check the current eligibility rules, exclusions, and claim steps for your transaction; do not assume that every listing or payment method qualifies.
Pay through the marketplace, not around it
Use the marketplace’s own checkout and an eligible, traceable payment method. Do not send money directly to the seller or agree to wire transfers, prepaid cards, or cryptocurrency. The FTC warns that off-platform payment can remove marketplace protection, and eBay explicitly excludes off-eBay purchases from its Money Back Guarantee.

Before confirming payment, verify that the checkout, item, seller, shipping terms, and total amount match the listing you reviewed. Do not let a seller’s promise of a discount or faster shipment persuade you to use a separate payment channel.
For a used GPU, check its condition separately from seller trust
A reputable-looking seller does not prove that a used card works, and a successful test does not prove who owns it, how long it will remain reliable, or whether you will have a remedy if it fails. If the purchase arrangement allows it, test the card under an appropriate workload before committing or promptly after receipt. Treat this as a condition check, not fraud protection.

Agree in writing on the card’s stated condition, known faults, included parts, and return options. For an in-person purchase, do not abandon protected payment or clear documentation merely because you can test the card.

GPU buyers have reported listings for photographs rather than cards, packages containing unrelated items, and cards stripped of critical components, according to Monica J. White’s June 29, 2025 TechRadar report (TechRadar: GPU scam precautions). The report provides examples and precautions, not a measured scam rate; it does not establish how common these incidents are.
Quick Recap
Keep a clear transaction record
- Save the order page, listing description and photos, seller messages, tracking information, and any serial or model labels.
- If practical, record one continuous video of the parcel opening, showing the shipping label and contents. This can help document what arrived, but does not guarantee a platform will decide a claim in your favor.
- Compare the delivered card and included parts with the listing before discarding packaging or other evidence.
If the item is missing, damaged, nonfunctional, or misdescribed
- Contact the seller promptly through the marketplace’s messaging system and describe the discrepancy clearly.
- Follow the marketplace’s formal return or claim process and keep the relevant records together.
- Submit any claim within the applicable deadline and through the route specified by the platform’s current policy.
A quick checklist before checkout
- Exact GPU model and board-partner variant match the listing.
- Condition, actual-item photos, and included accessories are clear.
- Recent seller history and written answers meet your expectations.
- Total price, shipping, return window, and return-shipping responsibility are understood.
- You know who sells the card, who ships it, and which protections apply.
- Payment stays on-platform, and you have noted the claim deadline and process.
