Which iPad settings should you change after setting up a new iPad?

A practical, model-aware checklist of iPad settings to review after setup, with exact paths, security trade-offs, privacy guidance, and recovery precautions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After the initial setup, change the settings that protect access to your iPad and make recovery possible before adjusting cosmetic preferences. Set a passcode, add Face ID or Touch ID when supported, enable Find My iPad, review your Apple Account and iCloud recovery choices, and then audit app permissions. After that, tune Auto-Lock, notifications, Focus, display, battery, keyboard, and accessibility options around the way you actually use the tablet. These are priorities to review, not mandatory settings that every owner should configure identically; menus and features vary by iPad model, iPadOS version, region, and account status.

1. Set a passcode before doing anything else

A passcode is the foundation for the iPad’s security. Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode, depending on the model. If the iPad has neither biometric option, use the passcode controls shown in Settings.

Choose Turn Passcode On and follow the prompts. You can use the default numeric format or tap Passcode Options for a custom numeric or alphanumeric code. Do not use a code that is easy to guess from your birthday, address, or another detail visible to people who know you. There is no single code length that is best for every owner; the practical goal is a code you can remember but other people cannot predict.

Apple says that setting a passcode turns on data protection and encrypts iPad data with 256-bit AES encryption. That is a technical property of the protection system, not a guarantee that every account, app, or cloud copy is configured securely.

Consider the failed-attempt erase option

The same passcode screen can offer an option to erase data after ten consecutive failed passcode attempts. It can reduce the value of a stolen iPad, but it also creates a recovery risk if a child, colleague, or repeated mistake causes ten failures. Turn it on only if you have a current backup and are comfortable with the possibility of a full erase.

2. Add Face ID or Touch ID if your model supports it

From the same Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode page, choose the enrollment control and complete the on-screen scan. Enable only the uses you want, such as unlocking the iPad, authorizing App Store purchases, filling passwords, or authenticating Apple Pay where available.

Biometrics improve convenience, but they do not replace the passcode completely. iPadOS will still require the passcode after a restart, after a period without unlocking, or in other security-sensitive situations. Apple’s user guide states: “For your security, Face ID and Touch ID data doesn’t leave your device and isn’t saved anywhere else.” If a scan fails repeatedly, use the passcode and re-enroll only after checking that the camera or sensor is unobstructed.

3. Turn on Find My iPad and verify account recovery

Enable device recovery at Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPad. Find My can help you locate the iPad if it is lost or stolen and supports the account controls needed to mark it as lost or erase it remotely. The feature is useful only when it is enabled before the iPad disappears, so do not postpone this step.

While you are in Settings > [your name], review the Apple Account details shown there. Check trusted phone numbers, account security prompts, recovery contacts or keys, subscriptions, and the devices associated with the account. Make sure the email address and phone number used for verification are still accessible. If you cannot sign in after losing the iPad, those recovery methods may be the difference between regaining the account and being locked out.

4. Decide deliberately what iCloud should sync

Open Settings > [your name] and review the iCloud section. Each service has its own switch, so decide which data should follow you to other Apple devices and which data should remain only on this iPad. Depending on the apps and account, the list can include photos, contacts, calendars, notes, passwords, messages, files, and app data.

Syncing is convenient, but it also means that changes or deletions can propagate to other devices using the same account. Before enabling a large category such as photos or files, confirm that you have enough iCloud storage and understand which items are stored in the cloud versus downloaded locally. Review the account’s storage and subscription controls in the same area instead of assuming every service is included at no cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand Advanced Data Protection before enabling it

For an optional higher-protection configuration, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Advanced Data Protection, if the feature is available for your account and region. It increases the number of iCloud data categories protected with end-to-end encryption, but it changes the recovery responsibility.

Apple requires a recovery contact or recovery key for Advanced Data Protection because Apple cannot recover protected data without the recovery method. Set up and test that recovery method before switching the feature on. Store a recovery key somewhere secure and offline, or confirm that your chosen contact understands what helping you recover access involves. Do not enable the feature merely because it sounds more secure if you are not prepared to protect the recovery information just as carefully.

5. Audit app permissions in Privacy & Security

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security. Review permissions by category rather than tapping “Allow” automatically whenever an app asks. The available categories can include Location Services, Photos, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, Bluetooth, and Local Network.

Match access to the app’s actual function

  • Allow location access when the app genuinely needs a position, such as navigation or location-based weather. Use the least broad option offered when a precise location is unnecessary.
  • Give photo access only to the images an app needs, when iPadOS offers a limited-selection choice.
  • Permit camera or microphone access for functions such as video calls or recording, and remove access from apps that do not use those features.
  • Allow Contacts, Bluetooth, or Local Network access only when the app’s purpose requires it, such as finding a nearby accessory or communicating with another device on your network.

You can change these decisions later, so an initial denial is not permanent. If an app stops working, return to its permission category, grant the specific access it needs, and test again. Conversely, if an app requests a sensitive permission without an obvious reason, leave it off and look for an alternative feature or explanation from the developer.

6. Choose an Auto-Lock timeout that fits your routine

Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. A shorter timeout reduces the period during which an unattended iPad remains unlocked and can conserve battery. A longer timeout avoids repeated unlocks while reading, following a recipe, displaying a score, or presenting information.

There is no universally correct duration. Choose a value that matches the places where you use the iPad, then revisit it if you notice either frequent interruptions or a screen that stays active when you walk away. Auto-Lock works alongside the passcode: it determines when the display locks; the passcode protects the device after it is locked.

7. Make notifications useful instead of noisy

Open Settings > Notifications and review apps individually. For each app, decide whether notifications should appear on the Lock Screen, in Notification Centre, or as banners, and whether sounds or badges are worthwhile. Disable alerts for apps whose messages are rarely urgent. Keeping only important alerts makes genuinely time-sensitive notifications easier to notice.

Check notification previews as well. If other people may see the iPad while it is locked, choose a preview setting that hides message contents until the device is authenticated. This is a privacy decision rather than a performance setting, and households that share an iPad may prefer a stricter choice than someone who keeps the device private.

8. Configure Focus modes around real situations

Use Settings > Focus to create or adjust modes such as Do Not Disturb, Work, Personal, Sleep, or a custom activity. Decide which people and apps can interrupt each mode, and set a schedule only when the schedule reflects your routine. A mode that blocks too broadly can hide a call or reminder you actually need, while one that allows everything provides little benefit.

Check whether a Focus mode is being shared across your Apple devices. If it is, turning a mode on from another device may also change the iPad. Review the Lock Screen and Home Screen behavior for each mode if you want different app layouts or fewer visual distractions during a particular activity.

9. Tune display, text, and appearance for the room

In Settings > Display & Brightness, set brightness, appearance, text size, and other display options to suit your eyes and lighting. Automatic brightness can be convenient when you move between rooms; manual adjustment may feel more predictable in a fixed environment. Dark or light appearance is a preference, while larger text and display-zoom options can materially improve readability.

Review any model-specific display features shown on your iPad, such as True Tone or a higher-refresh-rate option, rather than assuming another model’s controls will appear. Feature availability and menu labels vary by hardware and iPadOS version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Check battery information and charging behavior

Open Settings > Battery to see which apps consume power and when usage occurs. If one app dominates unexpectedly, update it, limit background activity where the system provides that choice, or investigate whether it is performing a task such as uploading photos.

Use any battery-health or charging-optimization controls displayed for your model if they suit your routine. A person who leaves the iPad connected for long periods may value charging optimization more than someone who frequently needs a full charge immediately. Do not disable useful background functions solely to chase a small change in battery percentage without checking what capability you would lose.

11. Review accessibility and keyboard controls

Open Settings > Accessibility and browse the categories that match your needs. Options can adjust vision, motion, hearing, physical and motor interaction, and spoken content. You do not need to identify with a disability to use these controls: larger text, Zoom, captions, AssistiveTouch, reduced motion, and spoken feedback can help in specific situations.

For typing, search Settings for Keyboard if you do not immediately see the relevant page. Review autocorrection, predictive text, shortcuts, dictation, and hardware-keyboard options according to how you write. If the iPad is shared, remember that some keyboard and text-replacement choices affect every person using the same account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Use Settings search instead of guessing the menu

When a control is hard to locate, use the search field inside Settings and type the feature name, such as “Auto-Lock,” “Location Services,” “Advanced Data Protection,” or “Keyboard.” Apple documents Settings search because sections and labels can differ between iPad models and software versions. Open the result and confirm the surrounding heading before changing a related option.

Some Apple guides show paths for particular iPadOS releases, including iPadOS 27 pages. Your iPad may show a different label, an additional confirmation screen, or no control at all because of hardware, region, age restrictions, or account status. If a documented path is missing, install the latest compatible iPadOS update, verify that you are signed in to the intended Apple Account, and search Settings by the feature name.

A practical order for the first day

  1. Set a passcode and decide whether the failed-attempt erase option is appropriate.
  2. Enroll Face ID or Touch ID if supported and select the actions it may authorize.
  3. Enable Find My iPad and verify trusted account-recovery methods.
  4. Choose which iCloud services should sync and check available storage.
  5. Set up a recovery contact or key before enabling Advanced Data Protection.
  6. Audit sensitive app permissions in Privacy & Security.
  7. Adjust Auto-Lock, notifications, Focus, display, battery, accessibility, and keyboard settings as your daily use reveals a need.

This order puts irreversible or high-consequence recovery decisions ahead of personal preferences. Revisit the settings after you have used the iPad for several days; the best configuration is the one that protects the device without obstructing the tasks you bought it to perform.
