Google describes the responses as grounded in the material you provide, but it also warns that Audio Overviews can contain inaccuracies and audio glitches. In practice, use the audio to get oriented, then verify anything important in the original documents.
That distinction matters: source grounding tells you what the system is supposed to use, not that every sentence is a faithful quotation, that every source is represented, or that every conclusion is correct.

What NotebookLM audio is actually generated from
Google’s workflow is straightforward: open or create a notebook, add sources, and generate an Audio Overview. The company’s description of Gemini Notebook says its responses are designed to be grounded in the sources supplied to that notebook. That supports a careful formulation: an Audio Overview is intended to summarize your notebook’s source material.

It can compress several passages into one explanation, infer a relationship between points, choose which themes to emphasize, and present a conclusion in its own words. The documentation does not establish that every source receives equal airtime or that outside information can never influence generation.

Think of the notebook as the evidence set and the Audio Overview as an interpretation of that set. If your source is incomplete, ambiguous, outdated, or internally contradictory, the audio can reproduce those weaknesses or smooth them over in a way that sounds more certain than the documents warrant.
Why “grounded in sources” is not the same as accurate
Google’s own warning is explicit: “Audio Overviews, including voices, are AI-generated and may contain inaccuracies or audio glitches.” Google also says, “Gemini Notebook can make mistakes and its answers don’t reflect Google’s views.” Those are product limitations, not a measured error rate.
An Audio Overview can go wrong in several distinct ways:
- Selection errors: a relevant qualification, footnote, or dissenting source may receive little or no attention.
- Paraphrase errors: a sentence can change the scope of a claim, especially when “may,” “must,” or a date is lost during summarization.
- Attribution errors: the audio may make it unclear which author, study, or source supports a statement.
- Synthesis errors: two separate facts can be combined into a causal explanation that the documents never actually make.
- Numerical and naming errors: figures, dates, units, people, organizations, and technical terms can be misheard or spoken incorrectly.
- Audio problems: a generated voice can mispronounce a name, skip a word, or produce a glitch that changes what a listener understands.
Fluent delivery is not evidence. A confident-sounding exchange between synthetic hosts can make a weak inference feel settled, which is why listening should be the first pass rather than the final authority.

Which Audio Overview format should you choose?
The current help documentation lists four formats. They change the way the material is presented, not the evidentiary status of the statements. Length, language, and a custom prompt can also alter emphasis and coverage.
| Format | Best use | What it changes | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deep Dive | Learning a complicated topic or hearing an extended discussion | More room for explanation, context, and connections | That the extra detail is complete or correct |
| The Brief | Quick orientation before reading | A shorter overview focused on major points | That omitted details are unimportant |
| The Critique | Examining weaknesses, assumptions, or disagreements | Attention directed toward limitations and objections | That every criticism is supported by a source |
| The Debate | Hearing competing positions in the material | A conversational presentation of contrasting views | That the two sides are equally well supported |
Select a format according to your listening goal. A brief can help you decide which pages to read first; a critique can surface questions to investigate; a debate can expose disagreement. None of those modes is an accuracy setting. A prompt asking for “only numbers from the sources,” for example, may focus the output, but it cannot guarantee that a number will be transcribed correctly.
How to check an Audio Overview before relying on it
Use the audio as an index into your material. The following process keeps the convenience while putting evidence back in control.
- Define the decision or claim that matters. Before pressing play, decide what you might act on: a date, amount, diagnosis, legal interpretation, quoted passage, or recommendation. Verification effort should follow consequence, not merely curiosity.
- Listen once without treating it as a transcript. Note topics, names, figures, and conclusions that you want to investigate. Do not copy a striking sentence into notes as though it were a quotation.
- Ask the notebook about a specific statement. Use a focused question such as “Which source supports the claim about the 2024 total?” A narrow question is easier to check than a request to validate the entire episode.
- Open the cited source. Read the surrounding passage, not just the sentence that appears to match. Check headings, footnotes, definitions, tables, and qualifiers such as “estimated,” “projected,” or “in one sample.”
- Match the speaker’s wording to the document. Confirm names, dates, units, percentages, quotations, and who is making a claim. If the audio says “the study proves,” but the paper says “the results suggest,” preserve the paper’s weaker wording.
- Compare conflicting sources. When two documents disagree, record the disagreement rather than accepting the audio’s blended conclusion. Look for different dates, populations, methods, or definitions that explain the conflict.
- Re-listen to unclear audio. A pronunciation or glitch can make a critical term ambiguous. Use the text source as the authority; do not infer a word from context when the distinction matters.
- Label what remains uncertain. In your notes, separate “stated in source,” “reasonable paraphrase,” and “not established.” This prevents a plausible synthesis from becoming a fact through repetition.
Apply this process especially to medical, financial, legal, safety, employment, academic-integrity, and security decisions. For those uses, the original source and an appropriately qualified professional should outrank an AI-generated narration.

How citations help—and where they fall short
Citations provide a route back to evidence, but they are not a guarantee that the cited passage proves the whole sentence. Google’s FAQ notes a specific limitation: when a source is too short, Gemini Notebook may reference the entire document instead of identifying an individual passage.
That means a citation can be coarse. If the interface points to a short document, search within it for the relevant name or phrase and read the complete context. If the document contains several unrelated claims, do not assume that the citation identifies which one supports the audio.
For long or technical documents, verify the exact section, page, table, or paragraph yourself. A source link tells you where to look; it does not perform the reading for you. Keep the source version and date in your notes when the material can change, such as policies, prices, standards, or statistics.
What is known about privacy for different accounts?
Privacy treatment depends on the account context. Do not apply the consumer policy to a managed Workspace or Education account, or vice versa.

| Consumer Gemini Notebook | Chats follow the Keep Activity setting and the Gemini Apps Privacy Notice. Google says source files added to Notebooks are not used directly to train generative AI models. | The privacy notice allows for possible human review to improve services. Feedback can cause the associated interaction context to be reviewed. |
| Qualifying Workspace or Education account | Google states that uploaded files, queries, and model responses are not reviewed by human reviewers or used to train AI models. | Eligibility and administrator settings matter; confirm that your account qualifies and check the terms that apply to your organization. |
The consumer statement about source files is narrower than a promise that no data is ever handled for any purpose. It concerns files added to notebooks; chats and feedback are described separately. Before uploading confidential material, identify the account type, review the current applicable notice, and follow your organization’s data-classification rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Google has not established about accuracy
The official material cited for Audio Overviews provides qualitative warnings, not a percentage accuracy score, error rate, or independent benchmark. There is therefore no defensible number you can use to calculate how often an episode is right.
That absence does not mean the feature is useless. It means trust must be assigned claim by claim. A low-stakes orientation to a folder of your own notes may need only a quick spot-check. A consequential conclusion requires primary-source verification and, where appropriate, expert review.

Use this simple rule: the more a statement could cost you, the less you should rely on the audio alone.
Best Value
- Low stakes: use the episode to learn vocabulary, identify themes, or choose what to read next.
- Medium stakes: verify every number, date, named person, and causal claim before sharing the summary.
- High stakes: treat the audio as a navigation aid only. Read the underlying sources and obtain qualified advice before acting.
Also consider source quality. A perfectly grounded summary of an unreliable blog is still an unreliable basis for a decision. Check whether the documents are authoritative, current, relevant to your situation, and consistent with one another before judging the generated narration.
Frequently asked questions
Does NotebookLM make a podcast from my sources?
It creates a conversational Audio Overview from the notebook’s uploaded material. “Podcast” is a useful informal description of the listening format, but the result is generated narration rather than a human-produced program or a set of source quotations.
Can NotebookLM get things wrong even when the right source is uploaded?
Yes. Google warns that Audio Overviews may contain inaccuracies and audio glitches, and that Gemini Notebook can make mistakes. Uploading a correct source improves grounding but does not guarantee faithful selection, wording, attribution, or synthesis.
What should I do when the audio and document disagree?
Prefer the document, read its surrounding context, and record the discrepancy. If the issue affects a significant decision, check another authoritative source or consult a qualified professional.
