Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOpen Settings > General > iPad Storage first. Let the screen finish calculating, then use its recommendations and target the largest apps, downloads, photos, messages, or other categories. Choose Offload App when you want to remove an app but keep its documents and data; choose Delete App only when you are ready to remove the app and related local data. Downloads are spread across Files, offline-capable apps, Apple TV and other media apps, so there is no single folder that clears everything.
After each cleanup, return to iPad Storage and allow a moment for the figures to refresh. Apple Support advises maintaining at least 1 GB of free space to help avoid slowdowns; that is support guidance, not a guaranteed threshold for every iPad or workload.

Check what is using space before deleting anything
Open the storage breakdown
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then iPad Storage.
- Wait while iPadOS calculates the categories and app sizes.
The screen shows available capacity, a bar or list of storage categories, Apple’s recommendations when they apply, and individual apps ordered by their reported use. Start with the largest item that you no longer need rather than deleting several small apps at random. An app’s displayed amount can include its binary, documents, downloaded media and other local data. Cached or temporary material may be classified differently and may not appear as a simple app total.
Use the categories as a decision map
Photos and videos, Messages attachments, Mail, Books and PDFs, music, podcasts, downloaded streaming media, Files and locally downloaded iCloud Drive content can all be significant. Tap a category or app to see the actions iPadOS offers. The available controls differ by item and by iPadOS version, so read the description on your device before confirming a deletion.

Keep a practical amount of headroom
Apple Support’s slow-performance guidance says: “To avoid slowdowns, maintain at least 1 GB of free space.” Apple presents this as general support advice, not as a laboratory guarantee for every model, operating-system version or workload. If your iPad is close to full, aim to create more room than the minimum so updates, temporary files and everyday work have somewhere to go.
Apply iPadOS recommendations carefully
When recommendations appear at the top of iPad Storage, open each one and read its explanation. Options vary by device, region and iPadOS release; not every iPad displays the same set. A recommendation may point you to large attachments, unused apps or other local content. Enable only an action whose effect you understand, and keep a copy of anything you may need later.
Recommendations are a starting point, not a substitute for reviewing the largest entries. An app can be large because of offline videos or project files, while a smaller-looking category can contain many items that matter to you. Work down the list in order of size and importance.
Offload, delete or remove from the Home Screen?
These commands have different consequences. Use the following comparison before selecting an app action:
| Choice | What is removed | What remains | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Offload App | The app itself | The app’s documents and data; its icon may remain so it can be downloaded again | The app is rarely used, but you want its local data available if you reinstall it |
| Delete App | The app and related local data | Data stored separately in iCloud may remain | You no longer need the app or its on-device data |
| Remove from Home Screen | Only the Home Screen icon or location | The app stays in App Library and remains installed on the iPad | You are organizing icons; this does not reclaim app storage |
Offloading is reversible only while the app remains available for redownload. Deleting an app is more thorough, but it can remove unsynced projects, downloaded maps, messages held only locally, or other app-specific files. Check the app’s own sync or export options before deleting it.

Offload rarely used apps without losing their documents
Offload one app manually
- Go to Settings > General > iPad Storage.
- Tap the app you rarely use.
- Choose Offload App if that control is available, then confirm.
iPadOS removes the application package while preserving its documents and data. The icon can remain on the Home Screen or in App Library with a download symbol; tapping it later downloads the app again if it is still available. The space recovered is therefore the app itself, not its retained documents and data.
Enable automatic offloading
Apple’s current guide places the automatic setting at Settings > Apps > App Store > Offload Unused Apps. The exact menu path can vary between iPadOS releases. Turning this on lets iPadOS remove apps it considers unused while retaining their documents and data. It is useful when you want an automatic safety valve, but it is not a way to remove large project files or offline media stored inside those apps.
Delete apps only after checking their local data
Delete from iPad Storage
- Open Settings > General > iPad Storage.
- Select the app and review the information shown for its app size and data.
- Tap Delete App, read the confirmation, and confirm only if the local data is no longer needed.
Deleting removes the app and related data from the iPad. If the app kept information in iCloud, that cloud-stored information does not necessarily disappear when the local app is deleted. The reverse is also important: data that never synchronized to the cloud may be lost. Use the app’s export, backup or sync feature first when the data matters.
Do not confuse deletion with Home Screen cleanup
Choosing Remove from Home Screen sends the icon to App Library but leaves the app installed and consuming its storage. To reclaim that space, use Delete App from the Home Screen or the iPad Storage screen. Some built-in apps have special deletion limits, and which apps can be removed can vary by country or region.
Find and remove downloads in every place they can live
Review Files and local iCloud Drive copies
- Open the Files app.
- Inspect On My iPad for files saved locally by apps or by you.
- Inspect iCloud Drive for items that have been downloaded to the device.
- Delete only files you have verified are no longer needed, following the label shown by the current Files interface.
A locally downloaded iCloud Drive item uses iPad storage even though the master file is associated with iCloud. Removing the local download and deleting the cloud file are different operations. Choose the command that removes only the device copy when you want to keep the file in iCloud, and read the confirmation carefully before using a command that deletes the cloud item.

Check offline files inside productivity apps
Apps such as Pages, Numbers and Keynote can keep documents available offline inside the app, outside the folder you normally browse in Files. Open each app that you use for large projects, locate its downloaded or offline documents, and remove copies you no longer need. Confirm that an important document is synchronized or exported before removing its only local copy.
Recommended Free Tools
Remove watched videos and other media downloads
Open Apple TV and any other video or audio apps that allow offline playback. Look for sections labelled Downloads, Downloaded or Offline, then remove watched episodes, films or other media you no longer need on the iPad. Streaming apps maintain their own download lists, so deleting a file in Files may not remove a title managed by the streaming app.
Check books, podcasts and music
Books and PDFs, podcast episodes and music tracks can remain on the device after you have finished with them. Use the download or library management controls in the relevant app, and preserve documents or recordings that are not backed up elsewhere. A download removed from the iPad can usually be obtained again only if the service or your account still provides it.
Audit other large storage categories
Photos and videos
In iPad Storage, tap the Photos category and consider old videos, duplicate captures and exported clips first. Keep an independent backup before deleting irreplaceable material. If you use iCloud Photos, remember that iCloud storage and the iPad’s built-in capacity are separate pools. Apple describes iCloud Photos as one way to manage a photo and video library, but moving or synchronizing content to the cloud does not increase the iPad’s physical capacity and does not remove app binaries. The amount of local space used depends on your Photos settings, library and available cloud storage.
Messages attachments
Long conversations can contain videos, photos, documents and other attachments that occupy more space than the text itself. Review the largest conversations or attachments using the controls offered by your iPadOS version. Save anything you must retain before removing it, especially if the attachment exists only in the conversation.

Mail can accumulate downloaded attachments and message data. Delete messages and attachments you no longer need through the Mail app or the account’s own retention tools. The amount that can be removed locally depends on how the account is configured and what the server keeps; do not assume deleting a local message deletes the server copy.
Books, PDFs, music and podcasts
Remove completed reading downloads, duplicate PDFs, listened-to podcast episodes and music you can stream or download again. Keep purchased or irreplaceable files backed up. Use each app’s library controls rather than deleting random folders in Files, because app-managed downloads may not be stored there.
App-specific offline content
Maps, language packs, editing projects, games and other apps may keep substantial offline assets. Open the app that owns the data and look for storage, downloads or offline settings. Deleting the app is a last resort when the content is valuable or difficult to recreate; offloading preserves the data but may not free space occupied by that data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand System, Other and cached storage
iPadOS automatically manages many cached and temporary files. There is no universal “clear cache” control that safely removes everything, and cached material can be recreated as apps run. Apple’s guidance says users generally do not need to manually delete these items because the system removes some as space is needed.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →System and Other can include operating-system space, logs, indexes, caches and assets that are not individually removable. Do not promise that a particular tap will erase those categories. Restarting or updating may change how storage is classified, but it is not a guaranteed method for reclaiming a specific amount. Avoid third-party cleaner or optimizer apps; the native iPadOS workflow is the supported way to manage this storage.
Best Value
Recheck the total after every cleanup
- Return to Settings > General > iPad Storage.
- Wait for the capacity bar and category totals to recalculate.
- Confirm that the intended app, file or download is gone and that important data still opens.
- Continue with the next largest safe target if you still need more room.
Apple notes that storage figures can take a moment to update after an app is deleted. Do not judge the result immediately or expect a fixed number of gigabytes: the amount recovered depends on what you removed, how much app data remained, and how iPadOS reclassified cached content.
Check storage from a computer when the iPad view is unclear
Apple also documents checking an iPad through Finder on a Mac, Apple Devices on a Windows PC, or iTunes where that software is still used. Connect the iPad, select it in the appropriate app and review the storage summary. Computer and iPad totals can differ because cached content may be classified differently. Treat the iPad’s own storage screen as the primary guide for deciding which on-device item to remove.
Prevent storage pressure from returning
- Review iPad Storage after major travel, recording, editing or download sessions.
- Remove watched videos and completed podcast episodes instead of keeping every offline copy.
- Keep only active projects in productivity apps and archive finished work elsewhere you trust.
- Use automatic app offloading if you want iPadOS to remove rarely used app packages while retaining their documents and data.
- Before deleting an app, verify whether its data is synchronized to iCloud or another destination.
- Before deleting a Files item, distinguish a local-download removal from deletion of the cloud file.
- Maintain a buffer of free space rather than filling the device to its last few megabytes.
A quick decision framework
If one app is large and rarely used
Open it in iPad Storage. Choose Offload App when its documents or settings matter; choose Delete App after confirming that its local data can go.
If Files or iCloud Drive is large
Inspect On My iPad and downloaded iCloud Drive items. Remove obsolete local files or only the local copy of files that must remain in iCloud.
If video, photos or messages dominate
Use the owning app’s controls to remove watched media, unnecessary attachments or backed-up photos and videos. Cloud storage can support photo management, but it is separate from built-in iPad capacity.
If System or Other dominates
Do not chase a promised cache-clearing shortcut. Remove identifiable apps and downloads first, allow iPadOS to manage temporary data, and recheck the totals after they settle.
