Start with the settings that affect privacy, screen comfort and interruptions; then adjust battery and multitasking options only if they fit how you use your iPad Air. There is no required setup checklist, and changing settings is not a hidden performance upgrade. Available options can differ by iPad model, region and iPadOS version, so use the choices shown on your device as your guide. Apple’s iPad User Guide covers settings across multiple iPad Air generations and screen sizes.
What settings should I change on my new iPad Air?
A useful first pass is to review six areas in this order: privacy controls, display and Auto-Lock, notifications and Focus, Low Power Mode, multitasking, and accessibility. The order puts privacy and everyday comfort first while leaving more situational choices until you know whether you need them.

Think of these as decisions, not universal recommendations. You may prefer fewer tracking requests, a screen that stays on longer, fewer alerts, or a particular way to handle multiple windows—but each choice has a trade-off. For example, a longer screen-on interval can be convenient but may use more power, while a Focus mode can limit interruptions but also means fewer alerts appear under the conditions you set.

How do I stop apps from tracking me on iPad?
To turn off requests for permission to track activity across other companies’ apps and websites, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and switch off Allow Apps to Request to Track. Apple documents this control in Make your iPad your own.
What this setting changes
Turning off the request setting denies apps’ requests to track your activity across other companies’ apps and websites. It is a privacy choice, rather than a general switch for every kind of data collection or every permission an app may use. If you want to review access to other information, look through the available controls in Settings > Privacy & Security as well.
When to leave requests available
You might choose to leave the setting on if you want to consider tracking requests individually rather than suppress them as a category. Turning it off is a simpler preference if you do not want apps asking for that permission. The right choice depends on whether you value handling requests one by one or prefer not to receive them.
Privacy features and their availability can vary by region and iPad model. If the Tracking menu or a particular choice is missing, check the options on your device and consult Apple’s guide rather than assuming that every iPad Air has identical controls.

How should I set display comfort and Auto-Lock?
Adjust brightness and color to suit your room and personal preference, then choose how long the screen should remain on when you are not actively using it. Apple’s guide, Adjust the screen brightness and color on iPad, covers brightness and color controls.
Choose brightness and color for your setting
There is no single brightness or color balance that is right for every reader or room. A useful first adjustment is simply to make the display comfortable where you use it. Revisit it if you move to a different environment or find that the image does not look right to you. These are preference adjustments; you do not need to reach a prescribed level before using the iPad.
Set the screen timeout without sacrificing convenience
To change the amount of time before the display turns off, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and select an interval. A longer interval can help when you need to glance back at the screen without waking it again, but it also keeps the display on longer. Apple cautions: “Delaying or preventing Auto-Lock may increase power consumption.” See Keep the iPad display on longer.
Before lengthening the global Auto-Lock interval, consider whether the specific activity already keeps the screen awake. Active reading, video and navigation apps may prevent automatic locking while in use, so changing the timer may be unnecessary for those tasks. If your need is limited to one of these activities, first see whether the app behaves as you want without changing the setting for every use.

Which notifications and Focus settings are worth reviewing?
Review which apps are allowed to send notifications, then decide whether Focus modes would help you tailor which alerts appear in particular contexts. Apple’s Change notification settings on iPad explains notification controls, and the iPad User Guide covers Focus.
Start with the apps you actually hear from
Look through app notification settings and consider whether each app’s alerts are useful to you. The goal is not necessarily to silence everything: if an alert matters, keeping it visible may be more useful than reducing interruptions. Treat each app as a separate decision based on how you use it, rather than assuming one notification setup will suit everyone.
Use Focus for context-specific choices
Focus modes are a way to tailor which alerts appear in a situation such as work or sleep. Consider whether you want a context to have a different notification pattern from your usual one, then set up a mode only if that distinction is useful. A Focus configuration is personal; Apple’s documentation supports the controls, not a promise that any particular setup will improve productivity.

Low Power Mode is an optional built-in battery-saving feature. Use it when you want to conserve power; there is no need to treat it as a mandatory default setting. Apple explains the feature in Use Low Power Mode to save battery life on iPad.
This is a situational choice rather than a guaranteed battery-life target. The available guidance establishes Low Power Mode as an option, but it does not provide a universal number of extra hours or a quantified improvement for every iPad Air. If conserving power is not your current concern, you can leave it as an option to use when needed.

Windowed Apps is a version-dependent multitasking option. Apple’s support instructions dated September 16, 2026, say it can be enabled under Settings > Multitasking & Gestures on iPadOS 26 or later. The guide describes opening, switching, resizing and moving windows, including using them side by side. See Multitask on iPad.

Check the version before looking for the option
If your iPad has iPadOS 26 or later, look under Settings > Multitasking & Gestures for Windowed Apps. If the option is absent, check the installed operating-system version and the menu choices your device provides. The feature is not a universal setting across all iPad Air models and software versions.
Choose windowed work only when it helps
Windowed multitasking can suit a task that benefits from opening, switching among, resizing or moving app windows, including arranging windows side by side. If you prefer to focus on one app at a time, there is no need to change your workflow simply because a windowed option exists. The relevant comparison is between single-app simplicity and the flexibility of managing several windows.
Apple’s instructions describe what the feature can do, not a requirement to use it. Try the available window controls when you have a task that calls for them; keep the simpler approach if it fits your habits better.

Which accessibility settings should I personalize?
Accessibility settings are there to help tailor the iPad to different vision, mobility, hearing, speech and cognitive needs. They are not a checklist that every owner must complete. Browse the Accessibility area in Settings and adjust text size or related controls if they would make the device more comfortable or usable for you. Apple’s Make your iPad your own page points to personalization and accessibility options.
Start with the issue you want to address rather than changing a group of settings without a reason. If text is uncomfortable to read, look at text-size options; if another aspect of using the device is difficult, explore the accessibility category relevant to that need. Options can differ across devices and software, so base your choice on what your iPad actually offers.
A quick way to prioritize the choices
If you are unsure where to begin, use the goal that matters most to you as the decision rule:
- Privacy: Review tracking requests and other permissions in Privacy & Security.
- Screen comfort: Adjust brightness and color to your preference.
- Fewer screen wake-ups: Choose an Auto-Lock interval that suits your routine, keeping its power trade-off in mind.
- Fewer interruptions: Review app alerts and consider Focus for contexts such as work or sleep.
- Power conservation: Use Low Power Mode when conserving power is a priority.
- More flexible app layouts: Check whether Windowed Apps is available for your iPadOS version and whether windows suit the task.
- Individual usability: Explore Accessibility for options that address your own vision, mobility, hearing, speech or cognitive needs.
These choices are independent: you can change one without adopting the others. Make a small adjustment when you have a clear reason, then keep it if it suits your routine. The available feature set depends on your iPad Air and software, so an absent control is not evidence that you missed a required setup step.
