Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor recurring Windows quality updates, configure an Intune update ring: its quality-update deferral sets when an update is offered, while deadline and grace-period settings govern required installation and the restart window. Use a separate expedite policy only when a particular update needs urgent deployment.
Which Intune settings control normal quality-update deployment?
Update rings are the primary Intune policy surface for routine Windows quality-update servicing. They combine deferral, deadlines, restart behavior, active hours, and user notifications. Microsoft describes the ring settings in its Windows update ring policy documentation.

| Goal | Setting | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Delay an update | Update ring → Quality update deferral period (days) | Defers quality updates by 0–30 days. The deadline calculation uses the time the client’s scan initially discovers the update. See Microsoft’s update ring setting reference. |
| Require installation by a deadline | Use deadline settings = Allow; Deadline for quality updates | Sets required installation timing. The Intune setting reference lists a 2–30 day range. |
| Allow restart flexibility after installation | Grace period | Allows 0–7 days before restart enforcement; its clock begins when installation completes and a restart is pending. |
| Let Windows seek a less disruptive restart time | Auto reboot before deadline = Yes | Allows a restart outside active hours before enforcement. Microsoft recommends Yes. |
Deadline settings affect more than the displayed due date. With them enabled, updates download and install as soon as offered, and the policy can supersede download, installation, and restart settings from Configure Automatic Updates. One qualification applies to Windows 11, version 22H2 and later: clients updated on or after December 10, 2024 respect Configure Automatic Updates before the deadline, but ignore it after the deadline passes. Details are in Microsoft’s compliance deadline guidance.
How do the deadline and grace period work?
They are separate clocks. The quality-update deadline is counted from the client’s initial scan discovery of the update. The grace period starts later, when installation has completed and a restart is pending. The effective deadline is whichever occurs later: scan discovery plus the configured deadline, or restart-required time plus the configured grace period.

Before enforcement, a user may schedule a restart, and Windows can attempt one outside active hours. At the effective deadline, Windows forces the restart even if the device is within active hours. See Microsoft’s description of deadline and restart enforcement.
What values should you configure?
Microsoft’s 2026 Windows Update policy guidance recommends a 1-day quality-update deadline and a 2-day grace period. It also says: “Therefore, don’t use more than 7 days between the quality update publishing date and update completion (calculated by deferral + deadline + grace period).” The same guidance names the recommended values as “Quality update deadline, in days: 1 — Microsoft, 2026” and “Grace period for quality updates, in days: 2 — Microsoft, 2026.” Read the Microsoft policy recommendations.

There is a range discrepancy to account for: Microsoft’s Intune update-ring reference lists a 2–30 day range for the quality-update deadline, while the 2026 guidance recommends one day. These are distinct statements, not a reason to assume the live Intune control accepts one day. Check the available value in your tenant and verify how the relevant client behaves before prescribing a precise configuration. The 7-day guidance is a combined limit across deferral, deadline, and grace—not a seven-day allowance for each setting.
How do active hours and notifications fit in?
Active hours and notifications shape the user experience before enforcement, but they do not prevent a forced restart once the effective deadline arrives. Review them alongside the ring’s deadline settings: active hours help Windows find a less disruptive restart opportunity, while notifications inform users about update and restart status. Do not treat either as a substitute for setting the deadline and grace period.

When should you use an expedite policy?
Use an Intune Quality updates for Windows 10 and later expedite policy when one selected quality update—such as an urgent security or critical fix—cannot wait for the normal ring schedule. The policy temporarily overrides deferral for that update, and its restart deadline is configured separately from the ring, from 0 to 2 days. Microsoft says expedite policies are not recommended for ordinary monthly servicing; use update rings for recurring deployments. See Microsoft’s expedite policy documentation.
| Deployment route | Best suited to | Deferral behavior | Restart control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update ring | Routine, recurring quality-update rollout | Uses the ring’s quality-update deferral | Uses ring deadline and grace settings |
| Expedite policy | Urgent deployment of one selected update | Overrides deferral for that targeted update | Separate 0–2 day restart deadline |
A zero-day expedite restart deadline leaves users limited time to save work; one or two days gives more restart flexibility. How quickly an expedited update starts depends on connectivity, scan timing, service processing, and device state. For process details, see Microsoft’s expedite update guidance.

What should you verify before rollout?
- Confirm the tenant’s live settings. Check the actual Intune values available for deadline and grace instead of assuming the recommendation and setting-reference range are identical.
- Check device connectivity. A device without internet access may not determine when Microsoft published an update, so deadline enforcement may not work as intended.
- Allow for scan and service timing. Windows Update scans and connectivity affect when an expedited update begins.
- Validate eligibility for your population. The policy behavior and listed ranges do not by themselves establish every SKU- or build-specific prerequisite or the licensing of every tenant capability. Check current Microsoft eligibility documentation for the devices and tenant you plan to manage.
