Before recording with smart glasses, tell the people likely to be captured, ask where practical, and respect a refusal. Keep the recording indicator visible, avoid sensitive private settings, check local law and venue rules, and pause use whenever it distracts you from safety or another person’s boundaries. Because glasses can look like ordinary eyewear, do not assume people know when recording or AI features are active.
Before wearing smart glasses into a social or work setting
- Learn the controls on your exact model. Check its current manual and privacy settings to find out how photo, video, audio, and AI functions start and stop. Behavior varies by model, generation, and software.
- Check the venue’s rules. Ask a host, organizer, employer, or staff member if the policy is unclear, especially in a sensitive setting.
- Consider leaving them off. Ordinary glasses may be more comfortable for others during a private conversation, appointment, meeting, or gathering.
Before you press record
- Explain and ask. Say plainly that you want to record and why. Ask the people likely to be captured, particularly in a conversation or close social setting.
- Accept a no. Do not record someone who declines. If they are already in a clip, stop and discuss whether to delete or edit it before sharing.
- Keep the glasses away in sensitive places. ConnectSafely’s Parent’s Guide to Smart Glasses names locker rooms, public bathrooms, doctors’ offices, pharmacy lines, places of worship, and other settings where a camera or microphone would be inappropriate.
- Leave the capture indicator unobstructed. Do not cover, disable, or defeat a recording notice. Meta says its devices can prevent photo or video capture if the light is covered; check the documentation for the model in use rather than assuming other devices work the same way.
What the recording light tells people—and what it does not
Ray-Ban’s Ray-Ban Meta FAQ says the front-facing capture LED activates when the wearer takes a photo or video. It distinguishes that light from an inward-facing notification light and notes that first-generation glasses may behave differently during some AI features because of hardware limits. Meta’s responsible-innovation guidance says its devices prevent photo or video capture if the light is covered and that intentionally covering it goes against its guidelines. These are manufacturer descriptions of specific products, not guarantees about every brand or software version.

An indicator can reduce uncertainty, but it cannot explain your purpose, who will see the footage, or whether audio or AI functions are active. It also does not prove that everyone nearby noticed or agreed. As Meta’s guidance puts it, “It’s important to respect the comfort and privacy of other people when using AI glasses.” Conversation and consent remain the more respectful approach.
While wearing them, keep attention on people and safety
- Treat the indicator as helpful notice, not a substitute for asking.
- Keep your attention on traffic, steps, sports, and the people you are with. ConnectSafely advises wearers to focus first on the activity and safety during walks and sporting activities.
- Stop using the camera if someone asks or the situation becomes more private than expected.
- Do not operate controls while moving if doing so would distract you or create a safety risk; stop first.
Review a recording before sharing it
Making a recording and publishing it are separate decisions. Before sharing, review the clip for people, children, private conversations, sensitive information, or locations that change its context. Permission to record should not be treated as automatic permission to publish.

Consider limiting the audience and removing material that is unnecessary or identifying. Storage, disclosure, and publication obligations depend on location and circumstances. For example, Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information distinguishes public photography from later use or disclosure of personal data under the country’s rules.
Recording laws and venue policies depend on where you are
There is no universal rule that public recording is always legal or that consent is always required. The answer can depend on the country, state or province, setting, whether audio is captured, the people involved, and what happens to the recording afterward. Venue rules may also be stricter than the law.

- Singapore: The Ministry of Digital Development and Information says the PDPA generally does not require consent from people for photography or recording in public spaces. It also says organizations must ensure later use or disclosure of personal data has a reasonable purpose and complies with applicable laws. This is Singapore-specific guidance, not a global rule. - United Kingdom: A 2026 UK parliamentary answer says people may lawfully use smart glasses and similar recording technologies in public spaces in line with freedom-of-expression rights. That jurisdiction-specific answer does not remove other applicable limits. See written answer to question 12025.
- California proposal: The Associated Press reported on October 1, 2026, that Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill on September 30. The proposal would have penalized specified non-consensual recordings in spaces generally considered private and required an indication feature on covered wearable devices beginning in 2028. AP reported that Newsom objected that the definition of a wearable recording device was too broad and noted his statement that existing state law already barred certain recording without consent in private spaces. This is a dated account of a bill outcome, not a complete guide to California law. See the AP report.
For a specific incident or location, check current local law and venue rules, or seek qualified legal advice—especially where audio, sensitive settings, workplaces, or later sharing are involved.
Why it is worth being explicit
Ordinary-looking eyewear with a camera can leave bystanders unsure whether they are being recorded. A 2021 Meta human-rights report on Ray-Ban Stories identified bystander consent and wearer safety among the risks considered. That is a reason to communicate clearly, not evidence that every wearer is recording or that every device creates the same risks.
