There is no reliable citywide “best” internet provider in Boston: service can change from one building or unit to the next. Check your exact address first, then compare available wired options—especially upload speed, total monthly cost, equipment, and installation terms. Consider 5G home internet if wired service is unavailable or a wireless setup is more convenient.
Why your Boston address matters more than a citywide ranking
Boston’s apartment broadband guidance says residents may not have access to every provider operating in the city. Availability can differ by building, and landlord arrangements may affect which services tenants can get. Verizon and Astound likewise direct prospective customers to check an address before choosing a plan.

The City of Boston’s 2025 Municipal Digital Equity Plan reported that Verizon offered symmetrical fiber service to approximately 85 percent of Boston addresses, based on cited FCC data and analysis. That is a dated city-level estimate, not confirmation that Fios is available in a particular home today.
Use maps to narrow the options, not make the final decision
The FCC National Broadband Map shows fixed broadband availability reported by providers at individual locations. Its mobile coverage areas are modeled; actual performance can vary with the device, network capacity, and terrain, and the map does not show indoor mobile availability. The FCC says the map is updated through verification, provider data, location updates, and public input. See the FCC’s explanation of the National Broadband Map.

A third-party Boston provider map can help identify companies to check, but its estimates use census boundaries and provider-reported availability. Confirm service with the provider and, for an apartment, ask the landlord or building manager about wiring and access.

Verizon 5G Home: a wireless alternative
Verizon lists 5G Home options from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, starting at $50 per month. It describes the service as an option for addresses outside Fios coverage, with self-installation and no wiring for most installations. Speed and availability depend on the address and wireless conditions, so verify eligibility and the current offer rather than treating the advertised range as a guarantee.
Astound: check whether the local connection is fiber or cable
Astound says service is available in parts of Boston and Greater Boston, and advertises residential internet starting at 300 Mbps for $30 per month, subject to availability and changing offers. It describes its local network as fiber-powered, with fiber in select Boston neighborhoods; confirm whether the service at your address is fiber or cable.

For Xfinity, NetBlazr, and Starry, the City of Boston list is a starting point, not evidence of a current plan or service at your unit. Check each provider’s address lookup and ask whether your building is wired and accessible. Satellite and wireless options may also appear in provider maps, but availability and performance require address-specific confirmation.

How to choose a plan that fits your household
Compare the offers actually available at your address, not just the headline download speed. A plan’s fit depends on how many people use it, what they do online, and the full terms of service.
- Check upload and download speeds. Upload capacity matters for video calls, remote work, gaming, and sending large files. Fiber plans are often more symmetrical than cable plans, but compare the specific plan’s listed speeds.
- Calculate the ongoing cost. Check whether the advertised price requires Auto Pay, a promotion, or eligibility for a program. Ask about the price after any promotional period and include equipment, installation, taxes, and fees in the comparison.
- Review equipment and installation. Find out whether a router or modem is included, whether self-installation is available, and whether your own equipment is supported. For an apartment, confirm whether installation needs building access or landlord approval.
- Read the service terms. Compare contract and price-lock conditions, data policies, and any plan-specific restrictions before ordering.
- Match speed to actual use. A larger advertised maximum is not automatically better value. Choose based on the speeds and terms available at your location and the household’s needs.
What to do when a provider says service is unavailable
- Check the complete service address. Include the apartment or unit number when the provider’s checker allows it; eligibility can differ within a building.
- Ask the building manager about wiring and access. Boston identifies landlord arrangements as a possible barrier to service, so clarify whether the provider can reach your unit and what installation requires.
- Check the FCC map and another provider. Use fixed-service map results as a screening tool, then contact the provider to confirm. For wireless service, remember that modeled outdoor coverage does not establish indoor availability.
- Compare a wireless option if wired service is not practical. Check address eligibility and ask about installation, equipment, speed expectations, and current price before deciding.
How to make the final comparison
Once providers confirm availability, compare the exact offers side by side. Prioritize the factors most likely to change your experience or bill: connection type, upload and download speeds, ongoing price, equipment and installation, contract or price-lock terms, data policies, and building access. Provider advertisements and coverage maps do not establish independent performance or guarantee service at a particular apartment.
