There is no reliable way to guarantee that a VPN will play a particular country’s streaming catalog. A VPN changes the apparent network location, but platforms may detect or restrict VPN connections. Choose based on your actual streaming service, the country you are in, and whether the VPN supports your device—and be ready to turn it off if the service requires it.
What a VPN can—and cannot—do for streaming
A VPN routes your internet traffic through a server, so a streaming service may see a different network location. That does not guarantee access to the catalog associated with that location: platforms can limit what VPN users see or block a connection altogether.

Netflix says that viewers using a VPN may see only titles for which it has worldwide licensing, such as Squid Game or Stranger Things. It also says VPNs are not supported for live events or its ad-supported experience. If those restrictions apply to your plan or the content you want, a VPN is not a workaround.

Provider guides are useful for checking supported services, devices, and troubleshooting steps, but they are not independent performance tests. No controlled head-to-head streaming results are established here, so a provider’s service list should be treated as guidance rather than a promise that a specific title will play.

How to compare VPNs for your streaming setup
Start with the service and country
Check the streaming platform’s current rules for the country where you are physically located and the specific plan or event you want to watch. ExpressVPN’s streaming guide lists services and advises choosing a server location that matches your current country, citing platform terms and its own terms of service. That is provider guidance, not a legal conclusion or a guarantee of access.
Confirm support for the exact device
Look up your device model and operating system, not just the device family. App availability can differ between models and operating systems. Check whether the provider documents a native app for your television device, phone, or computer, and whether its instructions match the software version you have.

Look for useful setup and recovery instructions
Prefer documentation that explains installation, how to confirm the VPN connection, and what to do when a streaming service reports a proxy or VPN. A clear troubleshooting guide can save time, but it cannot override a platform’s restrictions.

Set up a VPN on Fire TV
- Check the model and operating system. Verify that the VPN provider supports your exact Fire TV device and its operating system. Do not assume instructions for Fire OS apply to Vega OS.
- Install the provider’s app using its device-specific instructions. Follow the current steps in the provider’s Fire TV setup guide and sign in to your account.
- Connect and check the streaming service. Select a server location consistent with your circumstances and the provider’s terms, then open the streaming app. The VPN connection itself does not confirm that a catalog will be available.
- Use the provider’s troubleshooting steps if playback fails. Confirm the app and device are supported and the VPN is connected. If the service reports a VPN or proxy, use the recovery steps below; changing servers may not resolve a platform restriction.
Why Netflix says you are using a VPN or proxy
Netflix’s error message says, “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again.” Netflix’s recommended response is to turn off the VPN or proxy if the error persists. Its separate VPN guidance also says a VPN may limit the titles shown to those with worldwide licensing.
Try this sequence:
- Disconnect the VPN or proxy and retry Netflix.
- If you need the VPN for another reason, consult the VPN provider’s streaming troubleshooting instructions and confirm your device and app are supported.
- If the error continues, follow Netflix’s current VPN or proxy error guidance.
