Spend your first upgrade materials on one deployed five-hero squad, not on the whole roster. Keep those five heroes level-matched with Antitoxin, then concentrate hero shards, Skill Badges and the best gear on your frontline tank and primary damage dealer. In the usual starter path, that means Arthur first as the tank and Marlena as the carry when both are available. Supports and reserve heroes should wait until the main team can clear the content you are currently pushing.
Antitoxin buys levels, hero-specific or omni shards buy stars, and Skill Badges buy skills. They are separate bottlenecks, so spending one efficiently does not compensate for wasting another. The order below keeps your main squad strong while preserving enough reserves for the steep cost increases later in the campaign.

Why one focused squad wins early
Last Asylum Plague uses a five-hero formation, normally with two frontliners and three backliners. Campaign stages, bosses and events usually reward a team that can survive long enough for its damage dealer to complete a burst cycle. Raising ten or more heroes at once leaves every one of them short of levels, stars, skills and gear.
The official Last Asylum Heroes Guide puts the principle plainly: “Do not spread Antitoxin and skill materials too thin. A focused main squad usually outperforms a wide roster of half-built heroes.” That does not mean you should delete or ignore the rest of your roster. Keep other heroes available for faction requirements, special modes and future balance changes; simply do not make them equal spending priorities before your deployed five are stable.

What “focused” means in practice
- Choose the five heroes you actually deploy most often.
- Keep their levels close together rather than pushing one hero far above four under-levelled teammates.
- Give the first star upgrades and premium Skill Badges to the tank and carry.
- Keep a reserve of Antitoxin for the next level wall instead of spending every vial on bench heroes.
Antitoxin: level the deployed five together
Antitoxin is the level currency. Your first goal is a level-matched main squad, because a low-level frontliner can collapse before the carry gets a turn and a low-level support can fail to heal or control enemies. Match levels in order of the five heroes on your formation screen, then preserve surplus Antitoxin as costs accelerate.
The official 2026 milestone table shows why broad levelling becomes expensive. These are the listed Antitoxin requirements at the named levels; they are not a promise that every patch will retain the same values.
| Hero level | Antitoxin listed | Spending implication |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 1,500 | Early levels are inexpensive enough to keep all five close. |
| 20 | 8,700 | Continue matching the deployed squad; avoid starting a second team. |
| 30 | 19,900 | Reserve begins to matter if you are also levelling substitutes. |
| 45 | 137,900 | First major warning against spreading investment across the roster. |
| 60 | 1,550,000 | A single detour into a bench hero can delay the whole squad. |
| 90 | 20,800,000 | Plan level gains around your active mode and incoming rewards. |
| 150 | 176,000,000 | Long-term progression requires disciplined reserves and a settled core. |
At level 45, the listed requirement jumps from 19,900 at level 30 to 137,900. Later milestones are dramatically larger again. Treat those jumps as checkpoints: level the five together up to the next practical threshold, then stop and rebuild your Antitoxin stock before experimenting with a sixth hero.
When a single hero can be ahead
A small lead for Arthur can be reasonable if your frontline is dying before the rest of the team, and a small lead for Marlena can help you meet a boss damage check. Keep the difference modest. A carry several levels ahead cannot compensate for a tank that is missing the health and defense needed to hold aggro, while an over-levelled tank without damage eventually times out.
Hero shards: Arthur first, then the carry
Hero-specific and omni shards increase star rank. Early shards have the greatest impact when they go to heroes that will remain in your formation for many modes, so prioritize the tank and primary DPS rather than a temporary event pick.

Arthur as the default first shard target
Arthur is listed in the official guide as an early Tavern Warrior/Tank and a frontline anchor built around shielding and damage reduction. The independent wiki says the first hero shards are best saved for Arthur because guaranteed rewards accumulate his shards. That combination makes him the safest default destination when Arthur is available and regularly deployed.
Use Arthur shards first when your team fails because the frontline breaks, when backliners are exposed early, or when his next star unlocks a meaningful survival threshold. Do not spend shards on Arthur solely because he is popular: if your account cannot field him or your current mode requires a different frontliner, apply the same rule to the tank you actually use.
Marlena as the default carry investment
The official guide classifies Marlena as a Warrior/Carry for boss pressure, PvE damage and burst windows. LDShop’s 2026 progression advice names Arthur and then Marlena as the safest long-term investments when available. The independent wiki reports that the publisher’s starter five—Arthur, Bella, Marlena, Claire and Celia—develops Marlena first after the initial foundation.
After Arthur reaches a stable early star threshold, direct your next reliable shards to Marlena if she is your main damage dealer. Her value is highest when a stage is lost to an enrage timer, a boss survives your first burst, or waves take too long to clear. If Marlena is not in your deployed team, do not build her on reputation alone; put those shards into the carry filling that role.
What to do with other heroes
Bella can fill a secondary frontline role, while Grenwald is listed as a backup DPS in LDShop’s progression path. Daskal, Zoya, Harper and Bell appear in official starter or Rat Swarm templates. These names are alternatives, not a mandatory universal order. A fully upgraded A-tier hero is often more useful than a half-built S-tier hero, as Savannah Reed of LDShop notes, so follow the heroes your account can actually star, level and equip.

Skill Badges: survival first, burst second
Skill Badges improve individual abilities and should follow the jobs those abilities perform in your formation. Read the skill descriptions at each upgrade level; names and values can change with patches, but the priority by function is consistent.

Arthur and other tanks
- Upgrade the shield or damage-absorption skill that protects the formation.
- Raise damage-reduction effects and defensive passives.
- Improve maximum HP and defense skills that increase effective survivability.
- Only then spend heavily on low-impact personal damage or utility skills.
These upgrades buy time for every other hero. If Arthur survives one additional enemy cycle, Marlena gets another opportunity to use her active burst and your support gets another heal or control cast.
Marlena and other carries
- Upgrade the active burst used during boss or wave damage windows.
- Raise passive damage multipliers that operate throughout a fight.
- Prioritize critical-hit, attack or equivalent offensive skills after the core burst is covered.
- Skip expensive support or bench upgrades until the tank and carry are stable.
Do not distribute a few Badges to every hero just to remove upgrade prompts. Concentrated levels on the abilities that define your tank and carry produce a more noticeable result than shallow upgrades across five skill trees.
Gear: use the same role order
Gear resources should reinforce the formation’s jobs. The current upgrade guidance recommends defensive gear first for tanks and offensive gear first for DPS. Keep the best pieces on Arthur and Marlena, or on the heroes performing those roles, rather than spreading high-quality gear evenly across low-rarity or reserve heroes.
| Role | First gear attributes | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Main tank | Health, defense, damage reduction and shield-related durability | Prevents an early collapse and protects the backline. |
| Primary DPS | Attack, critical chance or damage, and burst-enhancing offense | Shortens fights and helps meet boss damage checks. |
| Support | Survivability and the stats that improve healing, control or utility | Useful after the tank and carry can perform their core jobs. |
| Bench or low-rarity heroes | Only spare equipment | Avoids locking scarce upgrade materials into temporary pieces. |
If a mode suddenly requires a different tank or carry, move your strongest existing gear temporarily rather than fully upgrading a second set. Rebuilding becomes worthwhile only when the alternate team is a permanent requirement and your primary squad is already secure.

Choose the order by the mode you are pushing
The best investment is the one that solves the failure condition in front of you. Before spending a large batch of shards or Badges, identify whether you are losing to survival, damage, support or a mode-specific mechanic.
General starter and campaign formation
The official guide describes two frontliners and three backliners. One starter example uses Arthur, Daskal, Marlena, Zoya and Harper. In that arrangement, Arthur is the first defensive anchor and Marlena the first damage anchor; level the other three to keep the formation functional, but delay their premium stars and skills.
Rat Swarm
The Rat Swarm template is built around a tank, burst DPS and support. Put your first resources into the tank’s survival, then the burst hero’s active damage, then the support abilities that keep the cycle running. A hero who is excellent in campaign but cannot survive the swarm’s pressure should not receive mode-specific materials ahead of the actual Rat Swarm core.
Warlock encounters
The Warlock setup calls for a tank, a burn carry and a healer or support. Here, sustained burn damage and reliable healing can matter more than a general-purpose burst composition. Keep Arthur and Marlena as priorities when they fill those jobs, but substitute the heroes you have deployed if another tank, burn carry or healer is doing the work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA five-question formation check
- Can the frontliners survive long enough for the backline to cast?
- Does the carry deal enough burst or sustained damage for the mode’s timer?
- Is the support contribution—healing, control or buffs—actually resolving the failure?
- Would faction synergy improve this exact team without forcing under-levelled heroes into it?
- Are you spending for the mode you are playing rather than for a theoretical future roster?
A practical spending sequence
- Lock the active five. Choose the heroes that clear your current campaign or event and write down which two are frontliners, which one is the primary carry and which two provide support or secondary damage.
- Match levels with Antitoxin. Raise the lowest member of the five first, then bring the whole group to the next affordable threshold. Keep reserves as you approach the level-30 and level-45 cost jumps.
- Set the shard queue. Save guaranteed early shards for Arthur when he is your tank. After his foundation is secure, direct reliable shards to Marlena or your actual primary carry.
- Spend Skill Badges by function. Finish the tank’s shield, reduction, HP and defense priorities before investing deeply in support. Then complete the carry’s active burst, passive damage and critical or attack skills.
- Equip by role. Put defensive gear on the tank and offensive gear on the carry. Keep low-rarity and bench equipment behind the main set.
- Test the failure point. Replay the stage. If the tank dies first, add durability; if the timer expires, add carry damage; if the team survives but cannot recover, improve support. Do not change all three categories at once.
- Expand only after stability. Start a sixth hero or a mode-specific team when the five can clear your target content without consuming every reserve.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Levelling every hero to the same account milestone
Account-wide equality feels tidy but becomes inefficient when the level-45 requirement reaches 137,900 Antitoxin. Correction: match only the deployed five, and leave reserves untouched until the next progression wall is solved.
Best Value
Chasing an unbuilt top-tier hero
Rarity does not replace levels, stars, skills or gear. Correction: finish the hero already carrying your formation before diverting materials to an untested S-tier option.
Spending shards on supports first
Support stars can help, but they rarely solve an early wipe as directly as a stronger tank or carry. Correction: secure Arthur’s or your tank’s survival threshold, then Marlena’s or your carry’s damage threshold, and return to support upgrades afterward.
Mixing gear goals
Offensive gear on a tank can leave the formation exposed, while defensive gear on a carry can create a timer failure. Correction: use defensive pieces for the tank and offensive pieces for the DPS before optimizing secondary stats.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Ignoring roster and patch differences
Starter examples are not identical across guides or modes. Correction: compare the role a hero performs in your own five with the mode’s requirement before following a named build order.
Version and availability caveats
The independent wiki labels its information current for game version 1.0.87 and says it was checked on 31 August 2026. It also states that its reported four-star threshold for Marlena is not verified. Hero availability, upgrade costs and balance can change in later patches, so check your in-game version and current milestone screen before committing a large stockpile to an exact threshold.
The role-based order is more durable than any single number: level the active five, protect the tank, empower the carry, then improve support and reserves. If a patch changes Arthur’s or Marlena’s availability, apply that same order to the tank and DPS actually deployed.
Bottom line
For most new accounts, keep one five-hero team level-matched with Antitoxin, save early guaranteed shards for Arthur, and build Marlena next when she is your carry. Put Skill Badges into tank survival and DPS burst before support, and gear those two roles first. The sharp Antitoxin increases at levels 45, 60, 90 and 150 make broad roster investment the costliest early mistake.
