Start with Halo: Campaign Evolved if you want the original story rebuilt for modern platforms. Choose Halo: Combat Evolved in Halo: The Master Chief Collection if you want to follow the series in the order its campaigns originally arrived. Halo Infinite is another option, but its campaign is a later chapter rather than the best first step for a story-first playthrough.

Follow release order with The Master Chief Collection
If you want the historical progression, play the collection’s campaigns in this order:
- Halo: Combat Evolved
- Halo 2
- Halo 3
- Halo 3: ODST
- Halo: Reach
- Halo 4
- Halo 5
- Halo Infinite
The first six campaigns are included in Halo: The Master Chief Collection; Halo 5 and Infinite are outside it. The release-order recommendation puts Reach after ODST, even though Reach is a prequel set before the first game. Playing it first changes what you know going into Combat Evolved. Xbox Wire identifies Combat Evolved as the franchise’s beginning and describes Reach as a prequel in its overview of Halo games and related works.

Where Halo Infinite fits
Halo Infinite is a reasonable choice if you want a later-era campaign now, but it is not the strongest first game for understanding the story from its beginning. Halo Support says the game is available on Windows and Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles. Multiplayer and Academy are free to play without Game Pass; the campaign is a separate listing called “Halo Infinite (Campaign)” and must be purchased or accessed through some Game Pass memberships. Support also says physical discs grant access to the full game, including the campaign. Confirm the specific listing or disc edition for your platform before buying. Details are on Halo Support’s Halo Infinite page.

Do the TV series and games share a story?
No. The television series uses a separate “Silver timeline,” rather than the core game canon, according to Xbox Wire’s Halo universe overview. For the game story, use the campaign sequence above rather than treating the TV show as a prerequisite.
